The Party has improved social empowerment, self-esteem enhancement, economic and social justice, community outreach, AIDS research, gay and lesbian sensitivity training for all age groups, re-education camps, and the musical wisdom of Stereophonics and Manic Street Preachers. Also most of the Welsh names have been pronounced correctly which can prove quite tricky for non-Welsh speakers however Cadwallon is not quite correct due to LL not sounding like L (as in the English word wall) if I could I'd be happy to help with the correct pronunciation. Enjoyed the video.

    Very interesting video.As a Cymro I find this period fascinating...LL is pronounced by blowing to the side of your mouth...it's like an S from the side and sounds nothing like an L.!! Wish more of your countrymen would at least have a go,coz it's easy once you get the hang of it.😋

    Agree as a Cymro (Cymraeg fel mamiaith) it is a fascinating period which is often overlooked in our schools, the only person I recollect ever referred to from this period (or slightly earlier) was Cunedda Wledig with some mention of Cynddylan (Eryr Pengwern/ the eagle of Pengwern) although Cynddylan was mentioned as a result of his sister's eulogy to him rather than a historical figure. Not sure about blowing to the side of the mouth to create the LL sound, I feel it's more blowing with the tongue pressed on the roof of the mouth behind the front top teeth.

  • @drychaf

    @drychaf

    @@HistoryTime Sorry, but I can't agree with gerlan1234to on your pronounciation of Welsh names! I'm glad you are attempting to work on this, but I'd advise a few sessions with a Welsh speaker, even on the phone. Meanwhile, I'll try to help with a few basics... 'LL' Arrange mouth/tongue to say L, but don't actually say it. Blow instead = LL. Now try it with 'Llan'. As the voice starts to say 'an', there is a hint of 'l' from the end of the blown 'll'. A stand-alone 'll' doesn't have any voice to it - just as English 'sh' doesn't. F vs FF in Welsh. Follow the pleasantly convenient examples in English; of & off. One f is always v in Welsh. The double ff is always ff. Cadfan = Cadvan. Cadwallon ap Cadfan = Cad-WALL-on ap CAD-van (Welsh LL, of course,). The 'a' in the 'wall' part of the name, is like in English 'math', not in English 'wall'. 'DD' = hard th, as in English with. Not as in myth. Gwynedd shouldn't be confused with Gwyneth. Ceredic? I'd go for Ke-RED-ik. I've taught a Ceredig (Ke-RED-ig), same name, slightly different dialect. Ceredigion (Ke-red-IG-ion) is a large region in Wales today, in legend named after Ceredig, son of Cunedda (Keen-EDD-a)(note dd here being the hard 'th' again). C = k. U = ee. Canu Taliesin = KA-nee Tal-yES-in (not CA-noo TAL-essin!) I'll leave it there. Anyway - a pity about the pronounciation, especially as the Welsh 'Cadwallon' is the subject, but otherwise a great video, informative, well paced, and well orated - articulate and pleasantly voiced.

    If you do an entire series on that topic, might I suggest also looking into the matter of ethnogenesis, which is the problem of how the new(?) ethnic groups of late antiquities came about, and what determined whether a person was considered (by themselves or others) part of such a group. The academic debate has been going on for 50 years and it is a massively interesting subject, but primary sources are very scarce and moderate, balanced views in academia are somewhat hard to find.

    Great video, it's excellent to see a KZread channel with great production quality delve into what was once known as the "Dark Ages," and helping to make sense of it all. It would seem that there was a balance of power at work in Britain around this time, when one kingdom became too big and powerful a coalition of it's enemies was ready to take them down. I had heard of many of the names mentioned in this video such as Cadwallon, Penda, Oswald and Oswieu but could never make sense of the story from just a list of battles and when they were around. Truly forgotten history, the kind of stuff that should be taught in schools but never will be sadly. As a resident of north east England my hometown was once a part of the ancient kingdom of Bernicia (of which I'm very proud.) It is the site of a Roman fort perched at the eastern end of Hadrian's Wall which was apparently a royal residence and the birthplace of Oswin of Deira (a descendant of Edwin.) Imagine what might have been if Edwin had have been the kind of King that Alfred and his descendants turned out to be, uniting "England" centuries earlier than in actuality.

Really I guess because those in control have just dismissed ancient stuff as only 'stories' by Bede etc & everything that 'matters' is only what the English consider important. I paid little attention to history as a child, never being given a reason why it has any importance (!) & late in my life I am enjoying so much discovering actual truths of the story of humans everywhere. Today the nationality is British, the nation is the United Kingdom, the country/region is England, Scotland, Wales or Northern Ireland, and the ethnicity of the British is massively diverse, our DNA is vastly mixed. White British are Western Europeans for a reason (i.e not English, Scottish, etc... because there's are no such thing). Most English people show as majority Celtic and not Anglo-Saxon or Dane. In the 10th century, Saxons had the nationality of English but their ethnicity was German, the settled Danes had integrated as English but were ethnic Dane. Same for the Cumbrians south of Strathclyde were in England but ethnic Briton. All lived united, it is the ignorant who divide.

And Germany didn't exist in the 10th century. Go learn the difference between 'German' and 'Germanic'. The English are a West Germanic race. If you look at those with both paternal and maternal English ancestry, they're always of the Anglo-Saxon Nordid phenotype, which collapses your theory that the English are Celtic.

    Penda wasn’t really a ‘die hard heathen.’ Bede says he allowed Christian missionaries in his kingdom but disliked hypocritical Christians or something like that. “King Penda himself did not forbid the preaching of the Christianity to any even of his own Mercians who wished to listen; but he hated and despised any whom he knew to be insincere in their practice of Christianity once they had accepted it, and said that any who despised the commandments of the God in whom they professed to believe were themselves despicable wretches.” Also his son converted to Christianity and he seems to have had no problem with that according to Bede.

I’m guessing that because Americans tend to pronounce non-English names with American English pronunciation rules, they likely do so with “dd” as the consonant “d”, not the “f” sound as pronounced by the British narrator.

    Just something to think about, I'm curious about the populations of different regions as you are doing these. I don't know if your interested in reaching out to other channels, but there might be some potential here. If a channel like "EmperorTigerStar" was propositioned to use your map here and overlay the population year by year and/or the evolution of power it could give you both an opportunity for cross promotion that is mutually beneficial. If you could use an evolving map with data points in a video, it would improve your context, and if his maps had more context and detail along with the notion that a viewer could follow up with more depth if desired would work wonders for him. I'm completely ignorant of the copyright status of your maps and visual content, so it may not be possible. Intuitively, I think you've got a slightly higher production standard too. I imagine the population data is also rather weak, but such information would create more context than the notion that the size of a color on a map is reflective of influence/resources/population. I've never been to the UK, so it's even more disconnected for me. I still really enjoy the history and stories though. If you change nothing, I'll still watch 'em all ;) -Jake

    I think once you get to a certain point words tend to repeat themselves, having multiple different meanings across cultures. Yeh the ancient British kingdoms are so fascinating. Such a shame only fragments of literary evidence remain. History with Hilbert has a great video about the Hen Ogledd Old North Kingdoms. Highly recommend it. I'll be doing a series on them eventually. Honestly I think it differed from person to person, a lot of people probably had little idea about Rome whereas others (learned folk mostly) would've seen themselves as continuators. Roman ruins were often seen as the work of giants at this time, common people having little idea about what came before them

    The population of Britannia (not including Pictland) was around 3.6 million in around 350 ad. We know that the Romans had 125,000 troops in Britain at this time. There are many theories about Christianity being in Britain since the 1st century, local Brythonic Kings may have still been Pagan and worshiping Llyr or Bran. There were also Roman towns where Britons started wearing Roman dress and probably converting to Roman Paganism. The Romans made Christianity the main religion of the empire between 306 - 337 but I doubt everyone in the empire converted overnight. The Brythonic saw eachother as Cyrmu (kinsmen by blood) but war, differences in religion and a need for resources meant they always fought eachother as well as outside forces.

    No need to cheer for any of them. They were all opportunistic warlords who felt themselves above the common people and who just filled in a power vacuum after the Romans left. Genetics shows that immigration from continental Europe was not nearly as high as previously thought, so it appears only mostly young male warrior types invaded the eastern shores, taking over the running of the country from mostly peace loving farmer types with wives and families. The farmers then quickly learnt the invaders language in order to avoid discrimination. Odds are you are mostly of ancient Briton farmer decent. Keep your cheers for the social reformers of the last couple of hundred years.
