Cadillac Strut and Spring Replacement | Cadillac CTS ATS CT6 CT4 CT5 Camaro

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

WARNING: Incorrect statement in the video - top 3 nuts on the strut to strut tower connection should only be 16 ft-lbs! Not 35-45 ft-lbs.
This is a detailed how to for replacing MacPherson style struts on many rear wheel drive cars. This installation is specifically done on my 2015 Cadillac CTS VSport. It is the same as the 2014-2019 Cadillac CTS (all RWD models). It is also very similar to 2014-2019 Cadillac ATS and 2016+ Chevy Camaro.
This procedure is also exactly what you need for a how-to install lowering springs!
The install covers everything from removing the strut, using a spring compressor tool, and installation.

    !!ATTENTION!! I apologize for an incorrect torque spec in the video! The top 3 little nuts holding the strut to the strut tower should only be torqued to 16 lb-ft! For future reference, torque specs are largely based on the size of the nut on bolt being torqued. A nut/bolt combo like this would usually not ever be more than 20 ft-lbs!

    I just did this job today. Getting the strut out was cake. However, compressing my spring enough (3.6 AWD) was a pain. I could not compress it enough to relieve the tension. I ended up getting a second set of compressors. This allowed me to compress the coils and then grab onto the top plate to get a bit more compression at the top. A bench compressor would have been so much easier.

    Thanks for the video! Just hoping to clarify something regarding the upper strut mount nut, after you re-installed the upper strut mount on the strut you showed the strut bellow was loose because you said the nut had been started but had not been torqued down yet. Do you torque it down after everything is re-installed on the vehicle/right before you re-install the dust caps? Or do you torque it down beforehand? Is there a torque spec?

  • @JetFuelOnly

    @JetFuelOnly

    2 жыл бұрын

    You can tighten it at that time. I didn't show it. However, if not using power tools and you feel like you don't have enough leverage, you can wait till you have the strut installed. However! You may not have the right tools to reach down into the strut tower and connect with the nut and the inner T40 torx. You are probably going to have an easier time tightening it best you can off the car. Thanks for watching!

    You know...I don't. I have a feeling V lowering springs might not work so well with such a small engine up front. You could always trim a little off the front springs if it doesn't lower enough. Some people have great success with that, but I take no responsibility in the idea. Lol

    So, I've got a 2017 CTS LGX... Since the 2016+ Camaro and the 2016+ CTS are so similar, are the struts for each bolt-on compatible? They have different part numbers, but they look incredibly similar. I'm wondering if they have the same strut body, just with different damping rates and such. The Camaro has a quick-strut option from FCS, but the CTS does not. Could I just get the quick strut (or perhaps an aftermarket "performance" strut) for a Camaro, and bolt it onto my CTS?

  • @JetFuelOnly

    @JetFuelOnly

    I can’t answer that with certainty but yes I believe it’s just in the damping rates. My '14 CTS AWD had a lot of warranty work (nothing that left me stranded), but has been good the past 18 months out of warranty except for a coolant leak from the thermostat area. Unfortunately on the V6s that is not so conveniently located in the V of the engine's rear. Not fun (and I got to do it twice). I love the Vsport, but it was not in the budget when I bought my car.

    @@JetFuelOnly I think it was the thermostat gasket to the block that was leaking. There are 3 O rings and two gaskets that could leak between the thermostat halves, coolant pipe and heater hoses. You have to remove the cowl/ plenum, wiper system, but not the intake manifold (that would make it easier though). It's an awkward job since you have to lay on the engine and can't see what you're really doing.

    @@co4988 swift is the only thing I can recommend for a CTS-VSport. If you have another model the choices are different. Springs should be designed for your particular model other wise you get unexpected results. Swift makes good springs. @co4988 the only upgrade on the intercooler is larger front radiator for the intercooler loop from some companies. They give increased capacity. Just did my struts in my ATS-V following this video. Good video and really like the channel. However when you installed the strut mount bolts you say “they should be torqued to 35-45 ft lbs.” that is the torque spec for the center larger bolt. The smaller ones are 16 ft lbs. I later saw you had this deep in the video description but since I was just watching this I followed that (should have realized that’s way to much for those little bolts) and snapped a stud. My fault but just feedback for the video. Also you never specifically show when you torque the center shat bolt.
