WARNING: I was corrected that instead of a screwdriver, which could crack the fob, and i've had them crack even having never opened them, the manual says to use the key that's in the fob, insert into the slot, turn the key, and it opens.

No don't use a screwdriver. Use your key that's in the key fob there's a slot right above where the key goes you just put the key in there turn the key and it pops it open. It also shows how to do it in the owner's manual. If you do it that way with a screwdriver there's a possibility of messing up the seams on the key fob.

oh wow, no kidding? and it's in the manual? think i read it cover to cover when i bought it new in '13. guess my retention isn't what it used to be. thanks though!

I have a 2013 and also it's a very small part in the owner's manual it's only a few lines that talks about it. I missed it the first time around.

@@ThEmEsSiAh187-CFGeorge I just tried with a key, and broke one. The instructions i found on a cadillac page online said screwdriver or the key. you can use either, but you have to be gentle as these fobs do crack even just through use.

can the car be started with the real key not fob?

the fob doesn't actually start this car, it just allows you in the door. there is no actual key hole switch, but it's not a push button start either. it's a rotating switch on the steering column where the old cars had it, but it doesn't take a key. you get in, the car senses the fob, and you turn that switch, but no key insertion.
