Cadillac CTS - How to Check and Add Transmission Fluid

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

How to check and add fluid to the GM 5L40E automatic transmission, found in many GM and BMW vehicles.
CLARIFICATION!!! It was a really long day. Long enough that I grabbed a bottle of Mercon from my Powerstroke and not the bottle of Dexron VI right next to it. I managed to miss the giant "For Ford Vehicles" on the bottle even. This lead to draining about 7 quarts of brand new Dexron out of the car and the necessity for a trans flush in the immediate future.
DO. NOT. USE. MERCON!!!!! Dexron VI only! Sorry guys,
Tools required: Torx T40 socket, extension, socket wrench.

    You rock dude. Very helpful. I have very nice 2010 Cadillac CTS. And I've had work done on it that I can't do myself but thought I'd check the Trans fluid. WTF... I couldn't find the dip stick. Not good that I haven't check it since I bought it unless my mechanic did. Which I think k he did when he did timing chains. I will ask tomorrow. I have to pay someone now to check my fluid? Crazy. Is it bad that I haven't check fluid before now? 126,000 miles. No problems but I'm not one to wait until there is. Learn something new everyday. I'll be watching and sharing your stuff from now on. I'm 65 and have owned lots of muscle cars etc... but never heard of this. If you own a boat that almost the same way I check the lower unit on a outboard motor. God bless you bud. Thanks

    It's a late response, but was the car still running when you took the plug out was the car running? It needs to be, or the fluid will drain back out of the valve body into the transmission pan. Otherwise it just means the fluid level is high or where it's supposed to be, depending on what your definition of "a bunch" is. Remember, too much fluid can cause problems just like too little!

Hard for a person who works on cars to pay the bills when no one is driving anywhere! Since I'm not wrenching much anymore, I don't really have anything to create content about. Hi. My 05 Cadillac CTS is currently not moving when put into any gear. I understand that this could mean the tranny needs to be replaced. Before I do that though, is it possible that it could just need some fluid? If so, how do you go about adding fluid to a tranny that currently isn’t activating? Same process? Will it stream out in the same way even though the tranny currently isn’t activating?

  • @redlineauto8519

    @redlineauto8519

    2 жыл бұрын

    Transmission is almost certainly shot. When the one in the car filmed in this video failed it went all at once, I remember parking it at a gas station and when I came out... no go. The only way to add or check fluid in the GM 5L40E is through that plug. Depending on what failed in your trans fluid may or may not be getting pulled into the valve bodies which would affect checking the level, but if your trans just decided not to work one day it is highly doubtful that's a fluid issue. Slush boxes low on fluid give plenty of warning signs before failing. Good luck!

    @@redlineauto8519 could it be the tranny filter? I removed the fill plug today immediately after starting car and the tranny fluid poured out fairly fast. Maybe a quart or two. It’s stayed cold the whole time too. I thought it was going to just stream out in a thin stream but it just flowed out much more. Maybe it flowed out much more bc it’s not getting sucked into the system and is just sitting on the bottom of the pan. Idk. Any ideas on how to narrow down what the specific problem is?

    @@optpr1119 I'm far from a slushbox tech, so how an automatic transmission works is somewhat outside my field of expertise. That said, my guess is either the shift solenoids are shot and it isn't changing gears or the clutches are just so worn out that you get no go. Trans fluid should always be checked when the fluid is warm, and a trans will not heat up unless a load is placed on it. Given the cost of a used transmission for these (I think I paid $350 for one with ~100K) and the relative ease of replacing it, I would just bite the bullet and start budgeting for a replacement.

    Do you need the car on when you put in the oil

  • @redlineauto8519

    @redlineauto8519

    2 жыл бұрын

    If you've drained it, you don't want to run it dry. Add oil until it drips, start it up, run it through the gears, and add until it drips while running. But if you take the time to watch the video, the car is running when checking and correcting the level. I thought I explained this fairly well on camera, but when the car is off and the trans pump isn't running the fluid drains into the pan which will give an inaccurate reading. The trans pump must be running and you must cycle the gears to ensure that the fluid is in the valve bodies and not in the pan. All of this was answered over the course of the video.

    Sooo, think about liquid in a glass, and that represents your fluid pan, be it oil or trans fluid. When level, the fluid is a nice flat line indicating how full the glass is. Now tilt it back and forth. Notice the line in the glass changing? That is why the vehicle must be level in order to get an accurate reading.
