Cactus pear - the green gold

Ғылым және технология

ICARDA has released part one of a three-video series on cactus pear production, aimed at farmers in dry regions. The series promotes best-agronomic practices to improve productivity and enhance the quality of the crop at low cost. Find out about our work - www.icarda.org/
2021 is the International Year of Fruits and Vegetables (IYFV) by the UN General Assembly. Several events throughout the year will be dedicated to raising awareness about the important role of fruits and vegetables in human nutrition, food security and health. There will be a special focus on neglected and under-utilized species, within which cactus pear (Opuntia ficus indica) plays an important nutritive and economic role.

INFORMATION.- The catus pear is originally from Mexico, but not all are the same, just as there is sour orange there is edible, there are also cactus pear or as in Mexico it is called (I am Mexican), Nopal, there are some like many thorns and they are He eats the leaf (penca de nopal) and others that bear a lot of fruit. Depending on the nopal, the fruit can produce wine-colored fruits (they are my favorites), dark orange and pale green. Its fruits and the nopa stalk are very, very tasty, that is, the leaf, it is passed through fire a little to burn the thorns and then the trunk is removed where the thorns go. In Mexico they are also roasted and eaten directly without removing the trunk. It is the food of the "poor", but it is very healthy and good for digestion. I have the light green fruit, but I am looking for the red and orange.

Threw some pads on the dry ground 3 weeks ago. Today, I noticed that some roots are coming thru. One pad actually has some shoots growing out of its top. I am excited. I can't wait to start eating the fruit in 2 years. Thereafter, I will plant more cactus plants. I want to use them as fodder in the long term. They will be watered by the rain. I will add some goat manure.

Shouldn't give any water at planting. The cladodes/pads initiate roots from the existing water within the pads, and the roots grow into the dry soil. Water after a month in the ground. The weeding is wrong to do, keep the weeds, don't apply herbicides, they increase the health of the soil, and are not negatively competing if kept trimmed to not get more than about 30cm height of foliage.

Just the very fact that that you let that plant grow to 4 meters tall in the fast dry winds of Algeria, demonstrates your ignorance in its cultivation. You have lost wealth through ignorance. Meanwhile, the sons and daughters of Algeria exile themselves to lands of Spain and France. Inshallah, that the light of knowledge and wisdom reaches you!

I don’t think it’s really useful for the plants to weed out the little ones that grow in between. Probably it’s the opposite because in the middle and long run all the weeding and use of Herbizides will not just reduce soil fertility but also kill all the biodiversity. It’s good for the cactus to have some competition and have a few grasses and weeds growing in between.

You are correct. However, you have missed the the most important point. The youngest cactus pad are edible by humans. Indeed in Mexico, the country of origin and most cultivation, people eat it everyday. Their is precedent. Both cacao and vanilla originated in Mexico. One cannot say that they have not found success in India. Opuntia Ficus Indica will bring the most dramatic change to the Thar desert, and Hindustan will rejoice.

As long as there are only a few worms why not just let them be? Why always kill everything that isn’t directly “useful”? Perhaps those worms can become butterflies or other insects and are actually important for other plants for pollination? If they become too many, just cut of the leaves that have the worms in them and get them to a far away place.

The plant is sold by cutting not seed because the seed contains a valuable oil which fetches seven times the price of olive oil. It is used for cosmetics and is marketed under its French name Huile de Maroc or Huile de Barbarie.

@@parimalabaste9310 I don’t know who can supply you. I must reprimand you because you are afraid of using the variety with spines which would be more available. The spines can be cut off with a kitchen knife or singed off with a blow torch. If you have poor soil but need to feed: cows, goats, camels, sheep, & chickens, then this plant is for you. Even if you don’t need fodder, it still makes for a good substrate for Mushroom production. Do not do yourself a disservice! Also, you can make gobar gas with a biodigestor. The biodigestate you can grow spirulina. You may try to contact the University of Chapingo in Mexico for a referral to a supplier.
