🚆 Cab ride through lower Sihl valley (Sihltalbahn | S4 Zurich - Sihlwald - Zurich)

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

The first few seconds may look familiar to you. We are back on the SZU railway in Zurich! This time on the Sihltalbahn (Sihl valley train), listed in the ZVV S-Bahn Zurich system as S4, which connects Zurich main station to Langnau-Gattikon and an hourly run to Sihlwald, like here. This is a round trip, so sit back, relax and enjoy the full ride from Zurich to Sihlwald and back! The stretch to Sihlbrugg, after Sihlwald, is only used for exceptions, diverts, test runs and by steam trains in the summer season.
The Sihltalbahn runs on 15kV AC and shares tracks with the Uetlibergbahn (S10) from the same company, which uses 1200V DC. Due to this, the pantograph of the Uetlibergbahn had to be moved 1.3 meters to the right side, in order to be able to run both lines on the same tracks.
This video was done in cooperation with the Sihltal Zürich Uetliberg Bahn (SZU), special thanks for making this video possible!

    Most of us also prefer to drive in the locomotive, it just gives a much better feel of the train and the tractive force and therefore a better overall control, specially in bad weather conditions.

    That's some late snow? Looks cold and bright. Also I have been wondering how similar the controls are in all the different vehicles? There is a brief shot in one video where there is a wheel on the desk which obviously is not for steering! I hope that makes sense. What would that be for?

  • @RailwayEmotions

    Footage is from January, filmed on the same day as the Uetliberg cab ride. Controls in the control car and in this locomotive are 1:1 the same (it does handle a bit different though), but most cabs are unique, only a few are comparable. We had a standard cab, which was used in the 420, 421, 430, 510, 540, 560 and 620 series, but since then, unlike Germany, Switzerland did not have a standard cab design. It tends in that direction again with many new Stadler trains, but that is just the cab style of Stadler and not a "must".

  • @RailwayEmotions

    @RailwayEmotions

    5 жыл бұрын

    Fahrplanmässig fahren keine Züge mehr weiter, die Strecke wird jedoch als Umleitung und für Probefahrten genutzt, sie ist also voll befahrbar. In letzter Zeit war der Giruno zwischen Sihlbrugg und Sihlwald zu sehen.

    Kurvig ja, aber definitiv nicht an der Grenze des Möglichen. Da gibt es deutlich kleinere Radien, zum Beispiel auf der S6 in Seebach. Dort sind nur 30km/h zulässig.

    Thank you for another interesting video. I imagine the line can be busy at peak times, bringing commuters in and out of the city centre. Do you think the Uetliberg Bahn will eventually change to 15kV AC as the Chur-Arosa line did in 1997?

  • @RailwayEmotions

    @RailwayEmotions

    5 жыл бұрын

    It will be changed sooner or later, new vehicles are bought to work under both systems and one day, they will switch. Future generations will only be able to run under 16kV.

    This is a very picturesque line once you get clear of the city. Is it connected to the SBB network? Could they work through freight trains or whatever? It looks as if it used to go beyond Sihlwald, the track seems to go on further. Also an interesting shed at Sihlwald, I wonder what's in there.

  • @RailwayEmotions

    @RailwayEmotions

    3 жыл бұрын

    Of course it is connected, on both sides. It is sometimes used for freight and was once used for Eurocity trains to Milano because of construction works. However with the huge amount of traffic on the SZU network, there's not much space left for more trains.

    @@RailwayEmotions thanks for clarifying - on a related note, surely the connection from Wiedikon can only be used by steam or diesel, as you'd need to cross the 1200v DC section to reach the main Sihl route, or do electrics coast through there with pantograph down?

  • @RailwayEmotions

    @RailwayEmotions

    5 жыл бұрын

    It can only be used with 15kV electric (and thermal engines of course), but since I don't drive there, I cannot tell you how it exactly works. My guess is if the switch from Giesshübel is pointing towards Wiedikon, the 1.2kV is turned off in that section, so 15kV trains can touch both lines with their pantographs simultaneously without causing problems. It is quite steep there, so getting enough momentum to turn the circuit breaker off, lower the pantograph, coast through AND put everything up again would be pretty hard.

  • @RailwayEmotions

    What I knew (and realized I didnt mention in my last comment) is that the circuit breaker must be opened when passing that section. In your video this is visible by the lit up signal "U" (not the yellow one, the one left to it). That is easily possible with a bit of momentum. However lowering the pantograph, coasting through and lifting it again some 100m later would just take up too much momentum. We now have confirmation the panto stays up, which doesn't exactly confirm that the 1.2kV section is off during that time, but it is very likely.

    Good. The power catenary extends beyond Sihlwald and the maps show the line continues freight only to the Thalwil/Zug line. So in exception circumstance would we see through freights and passenger trains on this line? The length limit of the train being the passing places length.

  • @officialmcdeath

    @officialmcdeath

    The line was in active service as far as Sihlbrugg, where it joins the Thalwil-Zug line - Sihlbrugg station was shut down as part of ongoing upgrades to the Gotthard corridor and is now reached by bus from Horgen.
