Cab Ride Gmünd NÖ - Vienna (Franz Joseph Railway, Austria) train driver's view 4K
In this video you can enjoy the cab ride - train driver's view on the Franz-Josefs-Bahn from the border town Gmünd NÖ to Vienna (Wien Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof) in 4K/60 frames per second.
The Franz-Josefs-Bahn (lit. 'Emperor Franz Joseph railway line') is a standard gauge railway line in the Austrian state of Lower Austria. It runs 163.1 kilometres (101.3 mi) from Vienna, the Austrian capital, to the border with the Czech Republic at Gmünd. The Emperor Franz Joseph originally built the line and is today owned and operated by Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB).
The southern terminus of the line is at Wien Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof, in the Alsergrund district of Vienna. From there, the line follows the west bank of the Donaukanal to Wien Heiligenstadt and a junction with the Suburban line and the Donauuferbahn. From there, the line follows the Danube River, finally crossing it at Tulln an der Donau. At Tulln, it has a junction with the Tullnerfeld railway line. From Tulln, the line runs west-northwest towards Gmünd on the Czech border. At Gmünd, the line crosses the Lužnice river and continues to České Velenice, where it splits into the České Velenice-České Budějovice railway line [de] and České Velenice-Praha railway line.
The Franz-Josefs-Bahn hosts primarily Vienna S-Bahn and regional traffic. The S40 operates at hourly intervals between Wien Franz-Josefs-Bahnhof and St. Polten, leaving the Franz-Josefs-Bahn at Tulln. Regional trains operate every hour to Eggenburg and every two hours to České Velenice. Direct service between Vienna and Prague over the route, defunct since 1992, resumed in December 2022 as the Silva Nortica (lit. 'Northern Forest'). Regional-Express trains operate hourly to Krems an der Donau, crossing the Danube at Tulln and leaving the Franz-Josefs-Bahn at Absdorf-Hipperdorf.

- A really lovely ride on the historic Austrian Franz Josef Railway, which runs (in the other direction) from Gmünd via Budweis and Pilsen to Eger, and is (still) one of the last ÖBB routes with scheduled left-hand traffic, although track switching is set up on all double-track sections and trains can run on both tracks. The second track was removed in several stages between Gmünd and Absdorf-Hippersdorf; today there are plans to rebuild it - at least in part. After watching this video, Emperor Franz Joseph would surely have said: "It was very nice, I was very pleased!" Thanks to RailRelaxation for this interesting route!

A varied journey - both in terms of landscape and weather! Luckily it didn't rain heavily, that would have been a problem for the cameras mounted outside, you can sometimes hear it from the wind pulling on the microphone, so it can only be mounted outside and not in the driver's cab! Zvonimir Zelenika once kindly described in a comment that two cameras are mounted for safety reasons, thus minimizing the risk of just one device failing 👍👌 There are two scenes in which the image suddenly has a different color depth and position for a short time: right at the beginning and in Ziersdorf station... Image problems were probably bridged by simply using footage from the other camera for a short time 😊 Overall a wonderful journey, I'm always fascinated by the different cloudy skies - a much more varied image than just blue skies 👍👋

@1:26:44 no, this has nothing to do with the Flemish painter Rubens. It's a "Rübenplatz" - a siding intended primarily for the loading of sugar beets (German "Zuckerrübe"). These are mainly used during the yearly "beet campaign" ("Rübenkampagne") in September-November, and often sit idle for the rest of the year. It's literally just an open area ("Platz") where piles of beets are offloaded by the local farmers for transshipment.

@@domidom03 I mean... is there any reason for decommissioning besides "old age"?
@stephanweinberger
20 күн бұрын
@@lordeisschrank the old age makes them increasingly prone to faults, and it's also becoming ever harder to get spare parts. Also, they are limited to 120 km/h and have poor acceleration, which makes them an obstacle on busy lines. Apart from that they are not barrier-free (which is now required by law, they only survive on exemptions), they have no A/C (it really can get hot in them in summer), etc ... Sure, us rail freaks like them for the nostalgia and the ability to open the window and feel the wind 🙂- but that's not what a typical customer would expect.
The line I live on. Sadly, a cancelation campaign has been going on with several stops, including mine [fmr. Klein Meiseldorf-Maria Dreieichen station], and of the two sets rails that were once present, only one remains, leading to frequent bottlenecks.

@@RailRelaxation Yeah, I don't think they will. Because I actually sent an email to them, stating that it's a vital connection to both Gmünd and Vienna for the village people. They just answered, they wouldn't reopen the station, citing low ridership - which, in my opinion, is nonsensical, because in recent years, and even before 2015, the year of closure, people have been moving from Vienna to my little village, to escape the city atmosphere. At least 3 families' worth of people would be taking the train, that I know of, if they hadn't closed the station. Nevermind the fact, that our state's government likes to fund the very railway company that keeps on closing stations, with taxpayer money. Meanwhile, our mayor was busier building a solar farm than advocating the station not be closed. To put the icing on top of the cake, just months before closure, taxpayer money from the village folk, was taken to elongate the station platform - at a cost of a sweet €1+ million euros. For absolutely nothing. What had made me happy, watching your video, is that you actually included just about every single station shown, that got closed. Illustrating that, if you're living in the countryside, rail infrastructure has been crumbling for decades, all the while ÖBB keeps showing off their "great extension of their rail networks", and politicians telling us countryside residents to stop using cars and "taking advantage of public transport some more". Maybe that ÖBB part is true in regards to bigger towns, and villages close to Vienna, but it's certainly false for where I'm from... Sadly, not only have they closed these stations mentioned in the video, but entire lines were canceled. Such as the "Pulkautalbahn", a vital connector between 3 separate still-in-service-today lines (the Franz-Josefs-Bahn, aka Gmünd/České Velenice to Vienna and Wiener Neustadt/Payerbach-Reichenau; the Nordwestbahn, aka Retz/Znojmo to Vienna and Wiener Neustadt; and the Nordbahn, aka Laa a.d. Thaya to Vienna), the connecting railway between FJB at Schwarzenau, between Schwarzenau and Zwettl and so many more...

@@marcelbinder2150 Focusing on high-end (high-speed lines, major corridors) very often leads in many countries to ignoring, cutting and closing of local and regional lines. This has unfortunately happened in many countries, often railways don't know how to scale-down the operation for low density lines so it's easier to close them than to find a efficient way to operate them.

Historically, it was an important line and a major connection between Vienna and Bohemia (today Czech Republic), as line from Gmund diverged towards Prague on one hand and to České Budějovice (Budweiss), Plzen and Karlovy Vary (I would say that beer was probably large percentage of cargo). With the dissolution of KuK monarchy in 1918 and especially after 1945 and Iron Curtain, many lines between Austria and other countries that previously formed the KuK monacrhy were either completely closed or downgraded from mainlines to local and branch lines with much less cargo and passenger traffic, with removal of second track on many places.
A nice cabride, thank you! But man, that engineer really needs to be taught how to do efficient and consistent braking into the stations - no wonder the substantial delay. These trainsets can easily handle 80 to 100 kph approaching the mostly quite long platforms.

very little of them, there is no real capacity issues. In the main railway era it was a main line conneciting bohemia to the capital vienna of the austrian empire, world war 1 split it up to different countries, world war 2 delivered the iron curtain and killed the most former traffic, the reason it gone to single track because the traffic is gone and will never come back, the czechian prefer Vienna - Brno - Praha as the main line, not this railway, there will be no push to improve the status, the local status will deliver little changes now, mainly a new track Horn - Sigmundsherberg is planed to be able to run direct trains to vienna, additionally there are double track sections planed to be able to run commuter trains faster and not have to wait for the other direction service arrives, no real perspective for getting a full double track line again

I think he failed to slow down fast enough after the distant signal warning to slow down - after passing the distant signal you have certain amount of time to reduce speed - I would say he started slowing down too late so didnt manage to slow down enough before timer expired, kicking in the autostop. Will check some specs and try to see on larger screen what was the aspect of distant signal, its bit different in our local implementation of PZB than one in Austria, but I would say this makes sense.

- The approach signal at Sigmundsherberg station showed "Main signal clear at 40 km/h". The train driver has to confirm this with the alert button; then, in PZB-90 operation at position O, he has exactly 24 seconds to reduce the speed of the train to a maximum of 80 km/h, which he apparently did not manage to do. This led to an emergency or forced braking.

@@montgomeryscott1656 Thank You for correct explanation, in Croatia we use bit older variant of PZB (I-60) so I was not sure of details, but I assumed that principle was the same - distant signal said slow down, but he didn't slow down quick enough.
