If they would have told me back in the mid 90s that in 2023 I would have a huge backlog of new high quality C64 games growing each month, I would never have believed it. Cherry on top, I have too little time to play them all because I'm too busy making my own. It's really a childhood dream completely fullfilled.
Cursed Tomb is a breath of fresh air! So unique, with intricate level design - plus a nice balance of action and thought-provoking puzzle solving. It has echoes of Trolls and Tribulations, which I loved in the day
The graphical attention to detail in Zeta Wing 2 is very impressive. 😯
Amazing pixel art, wouldn't have believed that was possible on the C=64. Like the look of Zeta Wing 2, and the fighting game looks fun but first impressions suggest it's no exploding ✊ fist
Sarah Jane Avery is like the Steven King of game coding: It seems there's a new game from her every 4 to 6 months! And they're all impressive!

Even though Strikeback was a misstep, its hard to argue with winning RGN Gamers' Choice Award 3 time in a row. Will be interested to see how ZW2 fares against Lester and A Pig Quest in the 2023 poll.

Cursed Tomb's a much more unique and better buy. ZW2's a little meh ... more of the same
I'm glad the flood of awesome titles for my beloved C64 doesn't dry out. Thanks for your round-up, RGN!
New viewer, digging the content and i really like how you're so community based! It's like a video magazine. A winner is you 💚

Someone already said it but Cursed Tomb is a nice break from the usual sameness. And I hope we'll see more cartridge games in the future! Great channel, keep it up!
I've been loving Zeta Wing 2 so far! News Stand looks like a lot of fun as well.

I just can’t explain how much fun I had with Cursed Tomb. I didn’t expect to, it really surprised me.
Good enjoyable stuff. Thank you.
7:21 8Midas one of so many fine games being made !
Just bought zeta wing 2, can't wait to be home to play it!
Another great video roundup!
Nice round up, well done! I'll probably have a go at Zeta Wing 2 despite it's somewhat lackluster reception, I'm a sucker for shoot'em ups.

The reception (or the lack of) for Zeta Wing 2 does definitely feel muted. Maybe too much was revealed beforehand that gave an impression that not too much new was added? I know I had that perception. It's not until you play it that you get to appreciate the extras.
Nice work as usual sir. Can't wait to see the next episode.
some great quality - nice bookends

@@RetroGamerNation haha - a true master at work !
I would really like to buy Zeta Wing 2 but since the first game was already so very hard (I played it countless hours and never got past level 4) I don't see the point right now.
What's the best standalone emulator these days that has the most games and an original feel joystick that could connect to TV with HDMI?
@RetroGamerNation

VICE would be the standard these days that should satisfy your general gaming needs. There is a remake of a USB competition pro joystick if that is stick you like, otherwise best to grab a DB9 to USB adapter device.

@@RetroGamerNation - Thanks, I am familiar with the Vice website. I guess I meant hardware emulation with games built-in like those game boxes that are physically built to look like a C-64 or Nintendo and connect via HDMI. Kind of like the Retrogames Mini C-64. I got an Atari 2600 one that was pretty crappy and I didn't want to waste money on a Commodore version that sucked. LOL

@@hiker64TheC64 mini is great especially for the price. If you get one don't forget to upgrade the firmware and read the online manual so that you understand all of the features. You can add programs, customize joystick and video layout etc. If you can find the full size version it's even more awesome but it can be challenging to find one now.
With Zeta Wing 2 having so much hype - what I dislike most about it (apart from its "more of the same" nature) is the massively chunky size of the spaceship sprite. With its huge size - if the enemy bullets flew toward you at a decent pace, they'd be impossible to avoid. So to compensate, the enemy bullets have been "dumbed down" - they trickle toward you at a crawl. Not exactly an awe-inspiring challenge. Even at the dawn of 80's on Atari VCS, games like Asteroids and Defender had smaller and more maneuverable spaceships ... yet the games were a far greater challenge, as the enemy bullets and obstacles (from the more advanced enemies) flew toward you at a cracking pace
Zeta Wing 2 looks nice - it was mentioned on the dev's channel that maybe she would do well to get another musician involved, plenty on the scene would jump at the chance. I like her style of music, but I don't think it's entirely suited to that particular game. No disrespect intended.
@RetroGamerNation

Nothing really wrong with the style of music in itself but when you re-hash it over and over again then you can only expect complaints about it to escalate. Hopefully, Sarah will engage with an external SID maestro to further enhance her titles.

Wouldn't it be nice to see Chris Hülsbeck making some comeback on C64..
Nice, but shorter because you didn't feature any games which are work-in-progress.. still plenty in development out there which could be mentioned.

That is true but WIP reports always come out better where coders themselves proactively engage the channel to provide further insights.

@@RetroGamerNation I do find a lot of other channels/magazines being proactive asking developers for any updates on projects they may be working on. Goes both ways I guess.
@RetroGamerNation
Жыл бұрын
Yes that is true as well but I suppose as I don't have pages to try and fill then I am not having to hunt for content to act as filler if I am not in that frame of mind (which admittedly I wasn't for this episode). I've never knocked back anyone who wants to promote what they are doing not matter how good or bad the project may be or whether I think the project will actually come to fruition. But you are right, it works both ways and I will make sure that I delve deep for some WIP for June, especially since I intend on taking a break for July.
@rwxdesigns

@@RetroGamerNation Of course, very true some projects don't ever get completed - but it's just nature of the homebrew scene, but then look at Parasol Stars - lots of promo and adverts and the C64 version never materialised. I will give you an update on my next games for June. I have 4 games in various active stages of development. Enjoy your break in July.
