That's very interesting. I had no idea! I like Vette's so I have a C6 Z, but always wondered if a Porsche would have been a good option. For us, we have no Porsche dealers nearby, so GM was an easy choice. But I never thought of running costs being so different. Thanks.

I was in my late teens when the C5 came out and damn I wanted one so bad. But just like many teens it was just an unaffordable bream. A couple of years ago a was driving and seen a beautiful white c5 with a sale sigh. Looking at the car it brought back all the dreams that I had over this car and ended up pulling over and buying the car. Car sits on my garage now and l enjoy taking it to the canyon roads or just driving it anywhere. I don’t think I will ever sell the car but it might get a younger brother within a couple of years. If you look at actual Motorsport races from the early 2000’s the corvette smokes the 911 all the time. If you want a track monster then get the vette, if you want a QUALITY car that’s almost as good as the corvette on the track you get the 911.

R u kidding on the looks of a C5 ? (Yes I'm a C5 and C6 owner) that body style is not 90s .... it's timeless , if that car came out tomorrow, the looks would fit right in , you are correct. However, on the C5 reliability mine just turned 190k miles ...

Great video! I have both- 01 996 Coupe manual and 04 C5 Base manual. My 996 new was 77k while the c5 was 47k and you can definitely tell the difference in overall quality. The 911 is much better in the twisties in terms of feel. The corvette has tons of grip but the numb steering and body roll makes it feel not as capable. Obviously, the Vette is much more brutal in acceleration. 911 doesn't have an LSD, but the Vette does so I have a lot more fun with the Vette in a private parking lot if you know what I mean lol I love all cars and don't give a crap about what people think when they see me driving a Vette or driving a 911 haha.

Cracked heads, air to oil cooler, air to oil separator, bank2 cyl liners with 100% chance of bore score soon or later, variocamF1 pads, variocam+ solenoids, water pump issues, vacuum leaks all over...... I've owned 2 C5 Corvettes so far and I'm looking for my 3rd. The C5 is the BEST used performance car bargain for under 20k. It is such a competitive, tunable, and reliable platform. Had a 996, not unlike that one but manual. Absolutely adored that car, and in the end, it f'ed me good. The one you REALLY need to worry about is not the IMS - i did the IMS, preemptively. the real gotcha is the porous cylindar heads / bore scoring. They tried some wacky stuff in the mfrg process with the 996es to cut costs. Amazing to drive, ticking timebomb.. at least thats my experience. totaled her out, after putting massive.. and i mean MASSIVE $$ into doing everything preemptively. Great comparison between these two modern classics, and very non-biased. I’ve owned a ‘99 911 6-speed coupe and I almost feel like you missed out with an auto cabriolet. Insert all the cliche adjectives used in journalism and that nails the experience; raw, visceral, analog, exhilarating. the 911 is a better car but it should be because it cost a lot more when new. That being said the C5 is less expensive to buy and maintain. It has a larger cargo area in the coupe than the Porsche. The C5 is a better looking car in my opinion and the Coupe/targa is the best compromise between a hard top and a full convertible. Both have a great driving experience with the C5 being far more upgradable than the Porsche ( can easily get 400 - 500 hp with little money on the C5). Your choice but I went with the C5 on cost and attractiveness.

I had a '99 996 cabriolet and it was a great car. Build quality was amazing and was in like new condition. I now have an '02 Corvette convertible and well, it is a Chevy after all so it has Chevy build quality. Performance wise, they were pretty equal although you have to learn how to drive the Porsche in corners. Once you get the hang of it you can really have fun with it. The Corvette, anyone can jump in it and ring it out from the get go. I would have kept the Porsche except for one big factor and that is ownership cost. Porsche parts are just ridiculously expensive and the M96 engine has a bunch of potential catastrophic failure items. Mine has the double row IMS bearing so less prone to failure than the newer ones but still always lingering in the back of your mind. When it goes out you're looking at a $10K engine replacement. Then you have the IOS and intermix issue. The RMS issue, Cylinder bore scoring and a bunch of other stuff. The Corvette is much cheaper with way less issues. The harmonic balancer loosening up is about the only bug issue and it is an easy cheap fix. Plus, it won't destroy the engine if it loosens up. Overall, the Porsche is a better car but just too many possible costly repairs. German engineering builds a wonderful car but I think they are overly complicated. Now the 993 Turbo or even better, GT3 doesn't have the IMS issues but still have some of the other stuff. They are getting pretty pricey now and not a direct comparison to the C5 Corvette.

  • @DriveItOut

That's awesome you have personal experience with both! Some good insight there. Porsche's flat 6 engines are such a joy to drive, but as you illustrated their complexity can be a thorn in their side. There are few things more reliable and cheap to work on than a naturally aspirated chevy V8. The fun is enhanced by the worry free driving. Thanks for watching, and keep your eye out for more Corvette content coming from us very very soon.

I am so sick and tired of people pointing out the IMS BS! Change the oil every 3000km, and if your handy its cheaper than a regular car taking to the shop if you change out the parts yourself. I am speaking from experience as I replaced rear shocks, rad fan, thermostat, water pump alternator etc. The 996.2 is incomparable to a GM Corvette. As a design engineer from magna I designed these shitty build parts. If you are a muscle power house dude who's first question is how much horsepower then go with the C5. If you appreciate the engineering build and love to drive all over the place go with the flat 6!

  • @LivingOnCash

    @LivingOnCash

    2 жыл бұрын

@@9jfd1 Frequent oil changes will not solve the IMS issue. Regardless of you being sick of hearing it, to those that have suffered a catastrophic failure and the resulting $10k plus for an engine replacement, it is not a minor issue. Parts are more expensive even if you are a DIY'er. If you think a C5 is just about horsepower, then you have obviously never driven one. Yes, there is no denying that a Porsche is a better built car. The build quality is impressive and mine was almost 20 years old when I owned it and it felt like a brand new car. For the money though, a C5 and C6 are pretty hard to beat. I think it all boils down to affordability. 996's have gone up in value quite a bit over the last couple years and it is pretty hard to find a bargain on one now. I think the secret got out of it being an affordable Porsche. If you can swing the entry price and don't mind paying the "Porsche tax" when buying parts then they are a great car. I am actually thinking about getting another but will hold out for a TT or GT3 although those are pretty hard to find.

@@LivingOnCash I am not sure about your background but tribological properties of leaving sealed bearings results in degraded or increased friction inside the race due to grease separation. We have set procedures to keep sealed bearings under rotation when stored for streetcar wheel axles as I have 20 plus years experience in engineering after being a design engineer at Magna on the caravan sliding door latch. Getting back to IMS that is why many cases of owners garage queening the cars had infant mortality issues with the bearing. Furthermore everytime the car is brought up to temp and then cooled, the hollow shaft creates a vacuum effect and eventually sucks motor oil on the other side of the bearing causing degradation to the polymeric seal of the bearing. You mention frequent oil changes dont make a difference? I not only disagree but have direct contacts with some of the engineers who were involved in IMS development for the 911. What you know on KZread is superficial believe what you want. As I said porsche parts are not cheap but if you are handy and save labour for example I bought used OEM rear shocks for $300 CDN and installed my self and solved my creak issue with operating dampening performance restored. Compare that with going to the shop and replacing with new bilsteins it's well over $2k. You are in a similiar predicament if you own a TT, all depends on the tools and skills you have at your disposal. If you cant drop an engine, own a vacuum tool etc. It limits your ability but nonetheless maintaining and working on a flat 6 engine is challenging but rewarding compared to american engines. Stick with Japanese engines from the early 2000's I have half a million km on my 05 mazda 3 original clutch. Bring a car like that to the shop cause it's too rusty to even work on.... guess what costs more to maintain that or my 911? It's more or less the same.

Lol! Yah that shot didn't turn out the way I pictured. :) We were discussing how crazy long it took for the 911s top to go up and down. I was attempting to see if I could freeze and not blink for the entire time. Lol, i should have blinked. The button for putting the top up and down is down by your left knee, so i was also kind of bending in an awkward position to hold the button down. It ended up just being a recipe for awkwardness, but we left it in. Anyway, thanks for witching! It wont happen again, lol.

The C5 is still fast, especially with some relatively easy mods. It also just feels fast, you are so low and there is so little roll in the turns coming off something like a WRX even. Some of the Japanese cars handle tight stuff better but those are the ones you can totally take to gapplebees all day anyway (MX-5, BRZ/86). You might have trouble with a brand new 400Z or a BMW Supra but they are turbo and you have so much more potential for power, and you are light and there are plenty of aftermarket suspension parts. You can get a stereo into it, upgrade the headlights and maybe the seats to bring in some modern GT utility. The C5/6 are both great platforms with good aftermarket support and parts availability. Both these cars are going to hold value, they don't make them this way anymore. I will say be prepared to wrench a bit though, Harmonic balancers will need replacing, all those QoL mods need doing, seals will go eventually on these old girls. What better place to get your feet wet than a fiberglass Chevy truck, unlike something with bunch of turbo piping where the plugs are under an intercooler..Or a fancy shamncy rear engine feat of german over-engineering, where parts will cost you more than the car did. Also the C5 has a loooong nose and a (flexable) air dam, so be prepared to scrape every driveway you even think about driving up/down, it's like super-car training.

@@DriveItOut Lol, I can write okay and I know how to edit but I don't think I have the charisma in front of a camera..and I only know about Vettes cause I bought one... and I certainly don't have the energy/connections to find cool sports cars all the time. I might actually do "Tri-State Road Reviews" after I get some accident cams and a go pro or something installed and just talk over footage of mountain runs from my desk and give scores on traffic/population, road condition, speed/tightness. Maybe get some good thumbnails of Bambi and I having a near death experience as wants to happen out here. Do a couple upgrade vids, maybe stream some Forza.. but I barely have the time to finish my headers right now. Anyway, I enjoyed the review, I like the shootout format, keep up the good work! Ps. I agree it's a tough choice, but it wouldn't be if the Porsche's market value were not dramatically reduced by the IMS bearing issues, its styling, and its interior. The C5 is what it's supposed to be, as a Corvette. The 996 is not quite up to snuff, as a 911 at twice the original price. But that's good, because cheap 911, right? Unfortunately, the IMS thing can be a $20-30k nightmare if the engine is trashed, or maybe $4-5k if you catch it in time to take preventive measures, partly because you'll probably do the clutch 'while you're in there'. Replacing the harmonic balancer on the Corvette's LS1 engine is a few _hundred_ dollars -- it really isn't comparable to the Porsche IMS bearing problem, at all. So your budget _definitely_ matters, when choosing between these two excellent cars. Porsches are expensive to own, and always have been. Corvettes are considerably more affordable, and always have been.

I agree whole heartedly. Actually my instinct was to say pretty much exactly that, but in an attempt to avoid viewers viewing that as bias I chose to tip toe around the subject a little more cautiously. I disagree. I ended up HATING my Porsche, because the M96/M97 was the BIGGEST TURD motor Porsche ever laid, period: over-engineered, under developed, cheap parts like a sealed bearing for the IMS, brittle nylon/plastic chain guides, intake plastic parts, weak VVT solenoids, shall I continue? My motor starting cratering by 87K miles, with constant electrical problems, aargh. I'M SO GLAD A MOVED ON TO A C5 Coupe, that has ended up being one of the most reliable cars I've ever owned, not to mention easier to live with. Screw Porsche.

C5 is hard to beat. I know this first hand. I can't think of a more reliable and affordable performance machine of this magnitude. A Porsche can definitely frustrate it's owner with its maintenance, but I'm not gonna lie, I'd like a 987 Cayman before I die. Thanks for watching!

Straight line speed goes to the Vette all day long, but the 911 can be driven a bit harder in the curves. It's really a preference on how you get your fun. I tend to prefer the Vette as it is more playful at lower speeds. Do you miss your 964? Thanks for watching!

“When big design changes are made I think we get to a point when you go on in years a little ways and the scope of these things get much smaller and they don’t matter any more….and as a car ages you can look back at it and really see it for what it was, and we can appreciate what it is today even 20 years later” 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫🤣🤣🤣………what?

I was specifically referring to polarizing designs like the fried egg headlights on the 911. It was a big deal back then to people who thought it was breaking away from the traditional look. But now that we are down the road 20 years, we appreciate those parts of a cars design, and it doesn't matter a whole lot. Just like no one complains about Corvette tail lights not being round anymore. People have moved on. Things that used to be a big deal aren't a big deal anymore. I hope this helps. I'll do my best to explain it better next time. Thanks for watching!

Good vid but stupid comment about the Porsche's headlights ruined it. They're unique now because Porsche didn't have the guts to keep them. And, they're awesome. The later 997 was a lame attempt to look like the air cooled cars. Shame. Also, 996.1 dual row IMSB is solid, it was the cheaper later models that had single row bearings. Coupe 996.1 is sub 3000lbs and 300hp, only 911 ever to have these specs.

@@DriveItOut I love the efficiency and logic with that interior and the buttons and dash will last forever. 993 dash will crack, don't get me started on paint chipping 997 dash buttons, and that there's so many of them, terrible. 996's rule and people will wake up to it when they see it's like the hated 964 that you could pick up for $15K now they're untouchable. Well, the 996 is lighter with more HP and long lasting. 1999's have dual row bearing that lasts forever. 1999 was the last pure 911. After came the nav systems and techno crap that Porsche marketed to dentist's wife.
