    Great video and great work, though I’d like to point out that none of the panels are fiberglass, except possibly the aftermarket hood and the rear spoiler. Two of the most common myths about Corvettes are that they are all made of fiberglass and the use of gelcoat. Corvettes have not been made of fiberglass since 1972. Starting in 1973 they were made from SMC (Sheet Molded Compound, which has some commonalities to fiber; however, is not fiberglass). As for gelcoat, it has not been used at the factory since 1954, at which time manufacturing changed from hand laid to press molded panels. I didn’t hear you mention gelcoat; however, I just thought I’d put it out there for anyone who might read this.

    I paint vintage corvettes for shows. Yes strip to bare fiberglass and then assess. Any stress cracks must be ground into a V and replaced with resin and chopped fiberglass mat. I usually take roven mat and chop it up into 1/4-3/8" long hairs and stir it in. After filling the areas block sand then 1-1 Epoxy, then highbuild wet on wet. Block until correct. Sealer, base, and clear... with flex agent. Difficult to do one in less than 100 hours. I have dug all kinds of nonsense out of wheel lips and hood surrounds, superglue, bondo, permatex, the only thing that lasts is resin and mat.

    Exactly. The spiderweb-thin crazing or whatever - on boats anyway- are finishes that don’t have the same flexibility as the fiberglass. If any crazes were on that Vette it probably wasn’t in the ‘glass itself.

    Great, great artist. Concerning this fiberglass, I think you can order a product called Fiber Fill 4:1 from Evercoat, that here in Europe is imported by a company near my home called INDASA. If you use a 3.0 mm spray gun, it's easy to apply fiberglass over the body and it will halt the problems beneath. Crazing, cracks from old polyester jobs, etc.

    G'day Gunny, I've just sprayed my ute in 2k direct gloss ,unfortunately I'm no spray painter and there's quite abit of orange peel what's your advice on smoothing it out with a buff ,im fearful that if I take the direct gloss shine off it will reduce the uv protection even after a dry sand and polish what should I do. Really enjoy your video, really helpful. Regards greg

    My 1973 Stingray is remarkably similar. It had custom paint over old school Kondar primer. I stripped it with a razor blade and 80 grit. Then I went epoxy, G3 polyester, filler primer, epoxy sealer, color, clear. If I didn’t use polyester I would have had to glaze coat the entire car. Those cars are rough as you know. Good work. It makes me wish I would have kept the pearl white. But I went black.

    The "real" way is to dig right to the fiberglass so deep thet all of the "crack" is gone, then using fiberglass matt and resin > sand it down and then give the fiberglass coat of topcoat (gelcoat with wax), get the wax off before sanding and then start priming. Sometimes epoxy resin may be better for repairs than polyester resin.

  • @fishhuntadventure

    @fishhuntadventure

    But the problem with epoxy is that nothing else will stick to it if future repairs are required. Polyester is plenty strong enough by itself.
