Ex VFX/post dude here who left big studios and is doing his own thing now. I just got 2 c-stands and thought I knew what I was doing, but I was just schooled. Thanks!

Duuuuuddee!!! I have owned and used C-stands for years…but I didn’t know some of these things. This is huge! The part about the little knobs on the left and the big knobs on the right, makes total sense. Also I’ve been using the wrong end to mount my lights (smooth end and not the knuckle with a baby pin) there’s always something new to learn in photography even for veterans. Thanks so much for the great info! (Oh and I’m buying some of those junior to baby pins to make low floor stands)

Excellent post! Had I know the versatility of C Stands, I'd have bought them a long time ago.

They are an industry standard for a reason they just might not be a piece of gear most people are aware of if they don’t end up on a working set out there Just keep it safe !
Love seeing the depth Seth goes into when creative videos. I love he pulls the pin from his back pocket. Gangsta.

Best demonstration of C stands. Thank you! I appreciate the repetition on why little knobs on left, big knobs on right. I finally understand why this is imperative to make sure the big knobs are on the right when you have the light at the end. No one has made it this clear. Excellent instruction. Thank you!
Best C Stand Video…. ❤

Outstanding tips!
I've been a hobbyist photographer for 11 years now and I'm always scouring YT for useful informational vids to better learn the craft. It's rare when I stumble upon something useful and I found this to be immensely informative. Seth is my new favorite person on YT! I remember years ago learning about the weight on the correct side so that it tightens the grip arm over the center column if too heavy, but I've since forgotten and it makes perfect sense now that I'm using C-stands more often. LOVE the techniques for holding reflectors/foam core boards!! Even though everyone else does it, do not...repeat: DO NOT attach monolight to the rod portion of the grip arm. Always use the knuckle with a 5/8" baby pin. Intuitively it just made sense, but now you've given me solid validation. Do you have a similar vid for using super boom arms safely?

thanks so much appreciate all the kind words! i have an articulating arms video on my channel but not a dedicated boom or grip arm video yet no sorry

Even better, imho consider using light stands when you want to mount a light, as they are more stable overall. A C-stand is the second-best option if you can't use a light stand. C-stands are better suited for supporting cutters, flags, boards, etc.
Two of my favorite things Seth Miranda and Avenger gear. One thing I've learned is don't skimp on grip and make sure you know how to use it. A fellow photographer recently used my Baby Boom arm and almost immediately bought one for himself because of how much better he felt about using that vs his cheaper gear. I also sent him this video, great reference for those new to using C-Stands.
Well taught. Thanks much.
One of the things I really appreciate about Seth is, he talks fast-but that means he can tell you something important five times in a row and drill it into your consciousness, stays with you longer and makes it harder to forget, then on to something else important that you need to know.
Your a Great Teacher Seth. Thankyou!
Great video! Thanks for the tips.

This is fabulous. I've just recently started moving toward off-camera flash and trying to educate myself about studio lighting. So of course that takes you to light stands which takes you to C-stands. Looking at a picture of a grip head is like trying to read ancient Egyptian. This is the first comprehensive lesson I've seen going from base to riser to grip head to boom arm. Thank you!

Absolutely brilliant video and I realise where I have been going wrong in more than one area . Great presentation 🎉
Wildly useful video!
Coming from a real estate/architecture background, I never had the need for sturdy stands. However, having transitioned into headshots and portraits, sturdy and versatile stands are a must. I can’t tell you how valuable the information you’ve provided in this video is to me; I truly appreciate you having taken the time to make and post this video. Many thanks.

Fantastic video. Very well presented and informative!! Thanks.
Along with a sand bag on the long leg, i use a counterweight on the grip arm when i have a light and modifier on it. It helps when making adjustments to the position of the lights/modifier.

Yea counter weights are awesome most people don’t have access to them unfortunately but clamping down a weight is super convenient and adds stability up top as well for sure
