C-RAM: Oh Look! A CIVILIAN airliner 😨☠️

Ойын-сауық

#shorts #cram #CounterRocketArtilleryMortar
This barrage of deadly bullets comes from C-RAM. It is a land-based Phalanx Weapon System developed by Raytheon to Counter Rocket, Artillery, and Mortar shells. It uses a multitude of advanced sensors and systems such as Ku-Band radar, forward looking infrared, sophisticated thermal imaging and computer systems to automatically search, track, make kill assessment, prioritize, and lock a target in only 5 seconds. It has a 6-barrel, 20 mm Vulcan Gatling cannon that fires at 4,500 rounds per minute to destroy incoming targets within a 1000-meter effective range.
C-RAM can be mounted on a trailer or the rear-side of the Oshkosh truck for mobility. The first C-RAM was deployed in Baghdad in 2010 in order to protect the Green Zone which is where the American embassy resides. It could successfully destroy 70 to 80% of the incoming rockets and mortars, thereby proving its capacity as a defensive system.
Each C-RAM costs 10 to 15 million dollars, but with such massive firing rate, it comes at an operational cost of 30 to 60 thousand dollars to engage a single target.

Aaron Martin yes! I remember that. I was on the USS Jarrett in the spring of 1996. The Phalanx was the military term, and what you said is the slang version that sailors referred to it as. It was super loud. I remember hearing it before I saw it. I was down in the berthing area shaving in the 'head'. I heard this super loud noise that sounded like a chainsaw but 10 times louder. I asked "what the hell is making that noise?" And was told it was the Phalanx weapons system. They said you can see it if you go up on the deck of the ship especially from the flight deck, which was really just a small landing pad on the back of the ship for the SH-60 Seahawk. It didn't sound like the steady buzz of a machine gun because the pitch would change from super loud to a quieter low pitch as if it was suddenly moving further away. When I asked why the volume would change to the super high pitch to a low pitch like it moved further away, they explained that the direction was changing as it rotated, hence the different pitch. When the front of the gatling barrel was pointed in the direction towards us and shooting right over the top of you its was at the loudest and then when it rotated so the barrel was facing in the opposite direction towards the rear of the ship then it was a quieter low pitch. But anyway, when I was topside watching it the device was tracking planes up in the sky, not firing of course. But then it would go into a different mode where it was pointed down towards the horizon and then it would just fire long bursts for about 4 or 5 seconds at a time. The 'fire' it made at the end of the barrel was so awesome looking, especially at night. And then all the sudden while I was watching it, it shut off and the barrel pointed right downwards in my direction. I'll never forget that feeling looking up and seeing it pointed down towards me. I thought to myself "what if the thing malfunctioned and just came on and started shooting while it was pointed at me!?" I would be 'vaporized" and turned into hamburger meat. 😆 But man, what an awesome weapon! Huge depleted uranium rounds firing at something like 4 to 6,000 rounds per minute.

For the 2% of those who don't know the reason mini guns are called mini guns, it is because they are miniature Vulcan 20mm, i.e., the weapon pn this thing. On an unrelated note, you should know that those tracers you see up there, that's between 1/5, and 1/20 rounds fired, so for every tracer you see it fire, there's between 4 and 19 normal bullets that you do not. That's why it costs so damn much.

I was deployed to Baghdad in 2010, my workplace was right underneath one of these. Having it go off without warning was heart attacking inducing, it sounded like a dragon with a chainsaw. The operators with these things also had a warped sense of humor, they were required to do movement checks on the C-RAM at least once an hour, the guns will go from still to moveing up, down, left and right like clockwork. Unless you happen to be walking by while they were doing their test at night, at which point they would conduct their test by tracking you with the gun as you walked across the area . Few things are as disconcerting as realizing you have a 20 mm automatic canon aimed at you as you're walking back from midnight chow.

And even then it has up to 80% success rate only under the most ideal of conditions against relatively slower targets. It's susceptible to getting the hypersonic treatment if it's position is known or being over whelmed with a high volume of lesser targets. And it has a limited range, unlike a missile based anti air platform. So it's wonderful for short range point defense on things like green zones or air craft carriers, but it's not a replacement for larger systems that can cover serious ground.

Tbf tho, even just off the numbers, training a pilot to be in a jet costs millions of dollars. Even if it’s just a numbers game a jet pilot is very valuable themselves on a balance sheet. I think they can also make jets faster than they train pilots.
