Hello and welcome to a new piano review at the Merriam Pianos KZread channel. We’ve got a very exciting one for you here as we’re in front of a brand new C. Bechstein Concert L167 5’6” grand piano, hand selected at the factory by one of the most discerning professionals in the industry.
Besides a quick tuning, nothing has been done to this piano since it came out of the crate only a few short days ago. This is an ultra-premium, handcrafted piano from Germany, largely regarded as one of the absolute top smaller grand pianos available today.
If this is the first time to the Merriam Pianos channel, please subscribe, we’d really appreciate the support!
Product Overview
Some might argue that we’re currently living in another Golden Age of musical instruments, and especially pianos. A lot of this is likely due to China’s increasing global role as a consumer, with the Chinese market being one of the most active for high-end European piano exports.
With that in mind, many companies are now producing the best instruments they have in probably the last 100 years. The C. Bechstein L167 is a prime example of this.
The L167 is the entry point to Bechstein’s top quality level Concert class, and has very few alternatives on the market in this size range when considering the quality of the materials, level of design, production time, etc. Smaller grands are somewhat ignored in the lineups of high-end manufacturer’s, but that is definitely not the case here.
In my opinion, this is probably the best baby grand piano I’ve ever played. A lot of pianos have sweet spots - ranges where everything sings, the attack blooms with the harmonics ringing perfectly, the cabinet resonating, and these ranges are usually confined to about a single octave. I’ve been playing this piano for a few hours, and I can say that this piano has at least 8 sweet spots!
Piano Tone
The sustain on this instrument is simply excellent. Pianos of length typically don’t have an even sustain throughout the range, but this L167 has fantastic sustain all the way up to the top octave.
There’s an incredible amount of colour with an extremely active and precise duplex scale. The mid range is super warm, and much higher up in the mid range than is typical. The bass is powerful and clear, and generally sounds like a much larger piano. While there is a slight lack of tonal separation in the bass register, this is going to be the case with every piano of this size due to the inherent physical restrictions of the baby grand string length.
The cabinet resonance is substantial, something universal among all C. Bechstein Concert series pianos, and this is largely due to the rim design. There’s incredibly intricate laminations of mahogany, beech and hard rock maple throughout the inner and outer rims, and the exact same material continues across the front of the piano resulting in a full perimeter rim design.
Bechstein also makes their own hammers in-house, which is very rare these days with virtually all other European manufacturer’s outsourcing their hammer manufacturing.
Piano Action
Bechstein spends an inordinate amount of time on their actions, which they also build in-house, with some components sourced from Renner. The action here is their Gold Series action, which is featured throughout the rest of the Concert series.
The repetition speed is absolutely stellar - this is the type of action that will be able to accommodate even the most technically prodigious pianists.
Piano Features
The L167 features a soundboard of Val Di Fiemme spruce - the same Italian sourced wood that Fazioli uses. This is an extremely responsive red spruce wood, super dense and super dry for optimum sound projection characteristics.
The instrument features a vertically laminated bridge, widely regarded as the best practice possible for bridge design.
Most European manufacturer’s use Beech as the primary wood in the rim construction, whereas recently Bechstein and a small handful of others have added hard rock Maple to the mix, resulting in a totally different and evolved tonal profile.
Thanks so much for joining us here!

Small pianos can be fantastic when you really get to know what you have. I play weekly on a 46 inch Steinway vertical in a restaurant and I’ve gotten to where I don’t even really wish for a big grand in the space. You discover other things when you don’t have long bass strings.

I subscribed for the digital piano reviews but holy moly, the gap between sampling/modelling and the sound and nuances of a real piano, particularly this one, is massive. I thought the sound of modern digital pianos were excellent but it pales in comparison.

Stu Your ideas about instruments are always absolutely outstanding and, especially when it comes to your commitment, I think it's great to bring the C.Bechstein manufacture closer to people. We already agree that this manufacturer is one of the big players on this planet. But what would really interest me would be a three-way comparison within the group, e.g. between the W.Hoffmann P162 vs. C.Bechstein A160 vs. C.Bechstein L167! To bring out the big tonal differences within the W. Hoffmann P line, the C. Bechstein Academy line and the C. Bechstein Concertgrand line. In my opinion, all three lines are leaders in their segment in the piano business. I still trust Fazioli to do something similar to that of C. Bechstein. So I would be very happy about such a magical comparison. E.g. also between the W.Hoffmann P206, the C.Bechstein Akademie B 208 and the Concertgrand B212 ... !!!

Hi! Brent here! It all comes down to a matter of musical preference of course, but, personally, I find the L167 far superior to the Steinway M in terms of expressivity and musical potential, which is saying something because the Steinway Model M is a remarkable instrument. However, it is up to every pianist to make these decisions for themselves of course. :)

5'5" to 5'11" pianos are usually referred to as "medium grands" and "parlour grands" are usually pianos between the 6' to 6'10" size. However, there are lots of different sources and opinions on exactly where the cut-off points are for each "type" of grand.
