The Altered Scale is the seventh mode of the jazz minor (ascending melodic minor) scale. In C, it consists of the notes C, D♭, E♭, F♭, G♭, A♭, B♭, the same notes as a D♭ ascending melodic minor scale, but rooted on C.
The numeric scale degrees (relative to a major scale) are: 1, ♭2, ♭3, ♭4, ♭5, ♭6, ♭7.
This scale is often used in jazz improvisation over dominant seventh chords to obtain a tense, dissonant sound, asking for resolution to the 1 of the dominant chord.
