C-5/C-6 Quadriplegic - Power Assist Wheel Demo (e-Motion M15)

This video is a demonstration of the pros and cons of the Alber e-Motion M15 power assist wheel that I've encountered as a C-5/C-6 quadriplegic. I'm sorry it was a bit windy outside!

Hi Nannette. Thank you this information is helpful in giving you a better recommendation. Since you don't have the emotions you could go with several options. If you want the removable push rim covers you could go with the ones I bought from Alber through a local dealer, but I believe they are $275 for the pair. The ones you mentioned above that are vinyl don't seem to be the same, but could work for you. Another removable option if you have some hand function would be fit grips from a company called intelliwheels (www.intelliwheels.net/fit-grips/). These are very affordable. If you don't have great hand function and you use a standard manual wheel or something like a spinergy wheel I recommend getting a new pair of coated push rims from a company called rib grips (ribgrips.com/). I met one of the co-founders, Brandon Handel, who is a quadriplegic and has made a really great product. Good luck and thank you for watching my videos!

You are awesome! I'm wonky - i have right hand function, but not left hand, so with the smart drive, i can turn right no problem, turning left - not so much...i can ride in circles for hours though...lol :) - Ordering the Fit grips right now!! Hopefully that will help - definitely a learning curve on the Smart drive...

Yes there will be a learning curve so take your time and be patient. You may want to demo the thumb throttle buttons to see if that may help the issue with your left hand. I believe the throttle buttons will power and stop so if you need short bursts to maneuver tight spaces and doors that might be the answer. Good luck!

Great vid just couple of things you missed I would like to add. You can turn it on/off by touching the outer ring in the middle of the wheel so you do not have to have the control with you. Also he is right they are heavy, so when changing wheels if you also get the antitips you push them in and it lifts the wheels off the ground instead of putting your chair on its side. Also you missed the feature that if you hold 1 or 2 button on the remote it says H this function holds you when going up an incline for a few seconds so you don't roll back.

  • @abilitease

+Anton B Thank you for your comments. That is a great point about the antitips that I didn't know about. Very cool and helpful for someone struggling to take the wheels off. And yes the H anti roll feature can be very helpful on the inclines. Thanks for pointing that out!

Hey Mark, any plans to review and compare the new e-motion m25 wheels potentially compared to your twions that you like. Apparently, a lot lighter and with a cruise mode. I'm eying them up & really value your reviews!

Hello. I will reach out to my vendor and see if I can get a pair of the M25s to demo. They do look similar to the Twions, yet still have some of the hardware that is reminiscent of the M15 e-motions. I am interested to check out the newer technology. The wheels just keep getting better and better. I'll be in touch.

Your review was really helpful. I currently have Xtender power assist wheelsbut an getting a new chair (been about 10 years or so since my last chair). I am debating between the Emotion and the Twion. Do you know if the "parking" feature that is available on the mobility plus app for the Emotion is available in the United States? That is one feature I am in love with, but have heard its not available on the US version of the app?

Hi Kristie. Thank you for your comments. I actually don't even know what the parking feature is. If that's a feature on the e-moton M-25s you should reach out to Alber USA to confirm it's availability (www.alber-usa.com/us/contact/contact-form/). I really only use the Twion wheels and I rarely use the app on my phone. Best of luck!

Great video, thank you. I was actually talked OUT of the e-Motion wheels and into the Navione wheels...by the salesman/general manager of a company, who sold both. The reason being if you are active, or live on a dirt/gravel road...the e-Motion won't perform as well as the Naviones. I just noticed I am subscribed to your channel (the bell is filled in)...but never receive notifications...do you make them often?

  • @abilitease

Hi Morgan. I have been away from YT for a while and noticed I never responded to your post. The Navis look pretty cool. I mean if you are active I too wouldn't recommend the e-motions, but instead the Twion wheels, which I use. The e-motions are wonderful, but deigned for an individual with a very specific and adjustable assist need. If you live on a dirt/gravel road and have some hand function the Smart Drive is a good option too. How do you like the Navis? Does far can you go before having to charge them? Take care.

@@abiliteaseI bought them almost 4 months ago, and could never get them installed. Greg with Family First Medical, in New Minas, NS, somehow got his ego hurt because they were new to him and he got super ugly with me. Lawton's in Westphal, NS were hours away and probably charged a small fortune, so they were out. It is in the shop now, with a local mechanic, who will again, probably charge a small fortune, but hopefully will be installed and I can tell you how I like them. I have 2 nickel batteries...and apparently you can also use a lithium battery for the set up and use them interchangeably. The nickel ones are supposed to go 12 miles or 19 kms...so if the one breaks down, I will have a spare...or if I go somewhere 12 miles, I will hopefully be able to come back.

I'm considering buying a second hand pair of those. I really need push rim covers though as gloves aren't practical for me. Can you use the regular kind (i.e. can I use the ones I currently have on my chair) or do you need a special kind to combine with the e-motion system? I've heard conflicting stories about this, as some say you can't use regular ones because of the sensors in the e-motion push rims, while others say this isn't so and you can use any kind.

  • @abilitease

Hi Helen. My understanding is the metal pushrim is an integral part of the power assist wheel and you can only use push rim covers to go over the existing rims. I would call Alber-USA and confirm. Good luck!

It really depends on your hand strength and upper body. The emotion wheels are adjustable to be very sensitive whereas the twion wheels are not adjustable and you need some strength in your hands to engage them. Both are great options, but it really depends on what will work best for you at your function level. If you have the opportunity to try out both types I suggest doing that before making a decision. If you can't then I would say at your level if this is your first set of power assist wheels you are probably better off getting the emotions. Best of luck.

@@SKINNZ1 The Twions have great features, which I know the M25s have incorporated into their design. They are a lot less bulky than the M15s and the app on the mobility plus package seems a lot more user friendly than the original Twion app from Alber. The Twions can be a bit jumpy and if you can't grab the wheel they probably wouldn't work well for you. I think you are making a wise choice and I'm interested to see how they work for you. Best of luck!
