BYU still blocked the kick.... Maybe if it would have been closer, the kicker would have been able to kick higher, but I don't think so. Still, I don't see anything wrong with Locker's celebration (Big BYU fan here!). I get taunting and show boating, but this was ridiculous.

Son of a UW graduate here. I think the call was good according to the rules. I just can't stand celebration rules. Rules regarding celebrations should go something like this: Don't taunt. Don't excessively delay the game.

I was in the student section for that game, and I have never been more angry in my whole entire life. I was so sad for about a week after that game. And especially since we didn't win a game all season, that could've been our 1 one win that season. I can't believe it to this day.

the question is would byu still have blocked the PAT without the penalty? Maybe maybe not. The penalty didn't lose the game. They still had a chance with the PAT and the line let them through. That's what sports is all about.

The other part of it is that they (BUY) could flat out rush the kicker without having to protect for the fake like you would had the ball been placed at the 2.5 yd line or if there were more time left in the game. The extra point is a pop-up chip shot that is much harder to block than a 35 yd field goal. Hindsight: with 11 men rushing the kick and if future coaches have the kahunaaz, a fake would have breezed in for 2 points. How many times will it be called with seconds remaining down 1pt?

Actually, the rule book states pretty clearly that the player can't throw the ball "high into the air."

That is a ridiculous argument!! The most important thing in officiating is consistency. If you would understand this call in the first half then you CAN'T argue it in the second half. They should call the same penalty consistently throughout the entire game. End of discussion. My hat is off to the refs for having the courage to call a penalty that is clearly defined in the rulebook even though they knew it would not make people happy. That takes a lot of courage.

@RockSmithStudio The farther the kick, the lower you have to kick the ball. On an extra point, most kickers kick it higher, so it probably would not be blocked. also the defense does not try as hard to block kicks when its only and extra point.

Another dynamic of this game was that earlier in the 4th, safety Darin Harris was put on a backboard in a feared neck injury (reminding everyone of the UW's Curtis Williams tragedy in 2000) as players from both benches were huddling in prayer the players mother was being kept from running onto the field until the crowd starting booing for keeping her from him, then she ran onto the field to be with him. Later they determined it was a concussion, with no spine injury. The call was inappropriate.

an extra point is supposed to be kicked high and short to prevent blocking blocking. a field goal is supposed to be kicked long distance. if that was an extra point, the kick wouldnt have been blocked

This was actually one call the referees got right. Locker threw the ball high in air and broke the rule. The point is moot whether the rule belongs or not. It exists, and the onus was squarely on Jake Locker, golden boy of the Puget Sound, to not only take care of the ball while carrying it but to do the same in celebration. All the kid had to do was to just drop the ball. He could have been dog piled by his teammates, and that yellow flag would have stayed tightly secured in the ref's pocket.

i agree with the last two things you said but the first one is a way out there. even if they go undefeated they wouldnt have played big enough teams to earn their chance for a bcs title. But yeah, no one can say that byu didnt earn that win but that does not stop me from saying the ref should not have thrown that flag.

I'm a football official and I agree that anti-celebration rules are needed. As an official and a fan I want to watch the game and not people dance around and act like idiots. Having said that I don't think Lockers actions are excessive. He spontaniously tossed the ball up and started to celebrated with his team mates. It's something I don't think I would have penalized. At least the didn't send it to video review. Now that's a joke, but a discussion saved for another time!

regardless of what football "experts" are saying, the penalty had nothing to do with the kick. jan jorgensen was standing ON THE GROUND IN FRONT OF THE KICKER. he broke through the line, the ball didn't even make it to the leapers at the line of scrimmage. so all that crap about trajectory is stupid. the UW line broke down, jorgensen got in there and made the play. end of story.

I am a BYU fan and even I agree that call was sketchy. He didn't spike the ball in anyones face, no BYU player was near him. No one came off the bench and no one made any contact with any BYU player. I really don't understand the logic behind that call at all.

  • @ByuMba90

Rule 9-2-2: After a score or any other play, the player in possession immediately must return the ball to an official or leave it near the dead-ball spot. This prohibits: (a)Kicking, throwing, spinning or carrying (including off of the field) the ball any distance that requires an official to retrieve it.(b)Spiking the ball to the ground [Exception: A forward pass to conserve time (Rule 7-3-2-d)]. (c) Throwing the ball high into the air. (d) ... Looks like a fair call of a silly rule.

  • @WILTALK
    @WILTALK15 жыл бұрын

willeyhambone: If that is the way the rule reads thenl It is at the refs. discretion. It says "can be penalized" "not will be penalized" So he did have a choice and it is essentially a judgement call. Locker just flipped it over his back. He is just strong and it went high into the air. It is up to the ref to determine if it is unsportsman like. So those of you that say he had no choice are mistaken. The word can makes it an option not a requirement for a flag.

If they went for the 2, Willingham would have been fired on the spot. I don't believe Jake Locker's actions were excessive, however the rules state that you can't throw the ball, and he clearly did because he was excited. In case no one noticed, BYU's entire bench gets penalized for unsportsmanlike conduct as well. Who's to say the kick wouldn't have been blocked, penalty or no penalty? I agree the PAC 10 officials suck, and the Huskies played well, but the ref was merely doing his job.

  • @jackhandy00

(this is an earlier comment)bs. watch the kick replay, all 11 defenders are able to rush the pat because UW has to go 18 yards instead of 3. BYU does not have to worry about a fake, they are able to rush 2 extra men and as a result block a lower trajectory kick, also a result from the 15 yard penalty. THE REFS BLEW IT!

Again, the ball hit the guy in the chest. Jorgensen ran through that line like water through a seive. I don't care if they were kicking from the one-yard line, they wouldn't have made it. It doesn't matter what angle you're kicking at if your O-line can't block for you. If a guy is standing right in front of the ball before it is kicked, he's gonna block it, penalty or no penalty.

Willingham was holding one finger up at 15 seconds. I don't know if he saw the flag at that point. I was thinking the same thing, I would have supported going for 2. Fake a lead for Locker and dump it to someone standing in the back of the endzone. Too much about being a Husky fan is fantasy these days. Good game though, I liked some of the freshman running backs that got some time.

The refs were blatantly favoring Washington the entire game - they missed about 10 holding calls on the final drive, and they only called 3 penalties on UW the ENTIRE GAME, but BYU was flagged like 11 or 12 times! Washington wasn't even close to being in this game if it wasn't for the biased PAC-10 refs.

Anybody pulling out the rule book, or saying that the call was right, is wrong. I don't care what the rule says. You could argue that the ball was being thrown TO THE OFFICIAL!!! He didn't stop and punt the ball in the crowd. He didn't pull out a Sharpie and sign it. He didn't dance around. This is simply a kid who scored the biggest touchdown of his life, and being punished for being happy about that. People don't pay to see the refs officiate.

If the line holds up, then Jan Jorgensen wouldn't have shot threw the middle and blocked it while being held by the left tackle. A picture is worth a thousand words. Look at the Deseret News picture of the block. It wasn't blocked over the line, Jorgensen blocked it with his left hand. His hand was level with his shoulder. As a neutral watching this: nah no way, Locker was just excited, that's what the college game is all about, passion and excitement. He didn't swan-dive into the student section or throw the ball into the stands. It was not in the spirit of college football. You really have to look at it in the scope of the game, this was a touchdown in the dying seconds of the game. It doesn't matter though as BYU did well and blocked the extra point anyway. The result? Fair. But the call? Stupid.

I live in NYC and stumbled upon this clip, so I'm unbiased about it. It's clearly either a bad call or a bad rule...perhaps both. I think the refs are given some discretion on whether an act breaks the spirit of the law or the letter. It clearly breaks one (the letter) but not the other (the spirit). For that reason I think the refs should not have thrown the flag. Washington was clearly victimized by the call and I think even a balanced BYU fan would agree (even if it's through a big grin).

The whining over that call is pointless. Jan Jorgensen, a defensive end, blocked the kick going striaght up the middle and never even jumped or raised his arm above his head. It wasn't by some 7'2" freak that jumped up or by some 4.27-40 yd. corner around the end. It was by a D-End straight up the middle. UW's O-Line got blasted, so pure and simple, the kick would have been blocked from anywhere on the field. The ball never even made it to the 2nd or 3rd guy that would have blocked it up higher

A ridiculous call. The throw wasnt excessive. I've seen a million other replays where the player mor than just hands the ball to the ref or sets it down at the point where the ball was downed like the rule says, and those weren't called. So why this one? Locker was just caught up in the emotion of an 18 play drive and after he scored went to celebrate with his team. Nothing unsportsmanlike about that. The "throw" if you could even call it that wasnt much more than a flick over the shoulder.

If you think that's taunting the other team you need your head examined. A 20-something year old scored a TD in the final seconds of a big game and he was excited and threw the ball in the air. Oh no! BYU's feelings are so hurt! I watch sports partly because I enjoy watching atheletes have fun play the game. The NCAA's decision to suck all fun out of games will haunt them.

I agree with the majority here; the rule sucks but it is the rule. I do think everyone's missing a major point here, and that is BYU still had to block a VERY make-able PAT. sure it was a lot more difficult, but 35 yards from the middle of the field. that should not have been blocked regardless of the lame call. Having played a collegiate sport myself I'm sure that's what the UW coaches are saying to their team.

THIS WAS THE MOST SPINELESS CALL EVER!! the officials owe washington an apology, not to mention the game. and as for you byu fans, how can you proud of a game that you basically lost? you should at least have a enough integrity to admit that the ref gift wrapped this game for you!

This call is such garbage. when it comes to penalties such as excessive celebration some refs just don't know how to let the players play. What do you expect the players to do after they score a TD with 2 seconds left in the 4th quarter to potentially tie up the game? Calls like this just discourage any excitement in a game.

"And that is purely in the hands of the officials." What a terrible thing to say. What he should have said is: "And that is purely in the hands of Jan Jorgensen, the man who BLOCKED THE KICK."

Wow...a HORRIBLE call. The ref wanted to be a star! Glad I don't have to worry about PAC-10 refs here in Big XII country...too bad for the Huskies.

well, i think the call was a little iffy, but not as much as the commentator made it seem. obviously (probably) he was rooting for washington (im a fan of both teams). i was watching this game live, and i didnt think it was a horrible call but that toss over the shoulder maybe shouldve been overlooked. regardless, he didnt even get the extra point past the LOS, so none of it matters. And reading all the comments, people make it seem like it was BYU's fault that the call was made.
