Bytom is one of the oldest cities in Upper Silesia that has county rights. Its headquarters include, among others: The Silesian Opera and the Upper Silesian Museum. Bytom is a member of the Upper Silesian-Zagłębie Metropolis of Silesia, the Association of Polish Cities and the Association of Polish Counties. It is located in the center of the Silesian Upland, on the Miechowice Upland, part of the Bytom-Katowice Plateau. The altitude of the city ranges from 249 meters above sea level in the Bytomka River valley to 346 meters above sea level in the Segiet reserve area. Its original location was chosen mainly for defensive reasons, on a natural hill - Saint's Hill. Małgorzata. The Bytomka River and wet areas were a guarantee of safety.
