Bystanders did nothing as woman was raped on Philadelphia train, police say

Authorities say other riders who witnessed an alleged sexual assault on a SEPTA train last week "should have intervened." Instead, police say some held up their phones in the direction of the attack. Fiston Ngoy, 35, has been charged with rape, aggravated indecent assault and related counts in the incident.

As I recall, a white marine in New York DID intervene against an aggressive black man who was threatening people on the subway. With the assistance of two other citizens (black men), the aggressor was subdued and died in the process. The white marine has been charged with murder. This reminds me of a time when I was 19 and going home from work. I had just gotten off the train and was walking home. This man who was on the train with me got off and began following me. My gut told me that this man was following me so I began to pick up the pace and eventually sprinted back to the train station because not only was it dark but I figured that if this man tried to do something to me, there would be at least someone in the train station to help me. Boy was I wrong. There was only one man waiting for the train and I tried to stay close to him as possible. As soon as the man chasing me began to get closer to me, I yelled at him to stop following me. The man chasing me was in shock because I yelled and responded “I’m not following you”. The bystander saw and heard this and slowly began to walk away from both me and him. Almost in the verge of tears, I saw the bystander avoid me and it hurt me because I knew that if this man following me did something to me, I was on my own. Thank God there was a bystander in a bike who had seen the man chasing me earlier and came to the train station and asked me if I was okay and even stayed for a couple of minutes until the man chasing me got in the next train and left.

The more I think about it tho... if other ppl where in arms reach how could you not notice... the man stripping and trying to get her pants down... or her pushing him away? As a white guy yeah I woulda just watched or moved seats too We all know what happens, I step in, save this girl's life. Everyone thanks me for about 5-10 minutes. And then the next day I wake up to an angry mob outside my house calling me racist, and how I should have waited for the police and how it was racist to punch him in the face and how it was practically a public lynching, oh and now I lost my job, and now I'm blacklisted from working in my industry again, my life, my career, and my family is ruined all because I tried to do the right thing. Nah, I'm good on all that. Moving seats it is.

@@maxf223 Your comment is one great sadness. But it is the reality of how many think. I have heard a statement similar to yours from people of different backgrounds. It is worry that not one person alerted the law enforcement especially if uncomfortable and the reasons are similar like the ones you have mentioned. My conscious could not let me sit, move or watch this dramatic ordeal. I would intervene whether it was a White person, Asian person, Black person, Mixed person, any person irrespective of background. It is a huge concern the Public have reacted this way and feel they can't intervene similar to the reasons you have given. Anyway thank you for your honesty.

@Uncle Jasper This is very disturbing comment. Sorry to read in accordance to what you have written people have been sabotaging your progress. But "enjoy it" I have a huge problem with this part of your statement. My hope is that whenever a person is in need or encounters an ordeal that you are not in the same environment. Your comment is troubling and how I have processed what you have written is that you enjoy others pain and misery. I may have misconstrued what you have stated. But your message radiates red flags all over.

No one is obligated to risk the lives to help a complete stranger. At best the hero would go to jail for trying to help (that's how f the laws are). At worst, you lose your life. Subways especially liberal cities have a dangerous reputation. The lady was aware of the risk but she strong and independent. My women would never ride public transport because I would not accept it. I'll drive her myself and defend her if anything should happen.

The people that help are the ones who end up in trouble. Moreover, I've been told time and time again that violence is toxic, and I shouldn't interfere with "black culture" otherwise it's racist. So what do you want? To be treated like the fragile beings you are, and acknowledge that men are needed in this world? Or are you the sort who thinks women can do anything a man can, and men are no longer needed? Because if you look at the media, if you look at the news, if you look at social media, there's a VERY loud message that men need to sit down and shut up and let women go about their business. See what the latest wave of feminism has created? Probably about time for YOU to tell those types of people to sit down and shut up, unless they represent you?
