Bypass Theftlock Activated Radio Message

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This will allow you to temporarily bypass GM’s Theftlock Activated radio message so you can test your radio before taking it to the dealer to program or pulling out the eprom chip.

Have a guy that has a 2004 cadi Escalade that the display went out on. He bought another radio and the radio after installing had the same problem. I did this test and it worked great. My question is could you find the power wire on the wiring harness and run a new wire to the fuse box to turn the radio on? Would that bypass the anti theft system. Just wondering if that would work.

Interesting. When you say the display went out, do you mean the whole screen turns off and there is no theft lock activated message just a blank screen? Regarding the power line, my understanding is the radio has the car vin programmed in it so just providing it power, even directly from the car battery, won’t get rid of the theft lock activated message. I’ve heard the new fancy OBDii scanner/programmers (like a small iPad) are capable of programming the radio, not to mention make new virtual keys which is how all modern cars are stolen in less than 60 seconds - lots of news reports on this. But, I’m still curious about the answer to my first question. Thanks and good luck.

The display went out completely on the original radio but you still listen to the radio. He bought a radio and the guy asked for the vin and said it would work with the car but does not. Thank you for the update. The dealer said they would not reprogram it because the vehicle is too old and it would more than likely not work.

If you find the 8 leg chip the pin you want to pull up is the one at the 5 o’clock position (bottom right) with the front of the radio facing away from you. Do not remove the whole chip, only lift pin 8. Removing the whole chip in this vintage will likely kill all volume. Good luck and let us know how you make out.

Get a ch341a programmer and read the eprom, then find some numbers and letters that look like a vin number in the binary. If you don't want to risk it you can always back up the original firmware and make as many mistakes as you want. It only cost 10$ and the good put is that they don't have encryption.

UPDATE: After a lot of reading I decided not to risk turning my working radio into a brick by pulling the eprom. My local GM dealer charged me 0.5 hours and I now have a working radio. IF you want to attempt this yourself here is what you need to do: Open up the radio and find the 9355093 eight pin serial EPROM and take a soldering iron and a very small screwdriver and heat pin #8 up and lift/pry it carefully so it no longer contacts the circuit board. If you completely remove the chip this year of radio will likely not work anymore: no sound. Good luck and report back if you do it yourself.

Pin 8 is bottom right hand side if you looking down on it with the front of radio facing away from you. Dealer labour was 1/2 hour which here cost me $75 Canadian. No power at all to radio (no lights either?) or just screen not turning on? If no power, check radio fuse in fuse box x if it is good, you’ll need to pull radio out as most have a little fuse on the back the radio. If power but no screen, then the screen probably just died, which would be sad but does happen.

The location of the 9355093 eight (8) pin serial EEPROM will vary. It can be up near the front or in the middle. Do NOT completely remove it. Instead, take a soldering iron and a very small screwdriver/knife. Heat pin #8 and lift/pry carefully so it no longer contacts board.

  • @ChanceSummer

Jim Beamed : good question. I read a lot on the topic and usually the result is a short error code when radio boots up and then some people with pre-2003 models say they have presets but most say they lose them and it is like a new radio every time the car starts - no presets. If you remove the chip all together some people complain they lose all volume - I’m not sure what causes that. Anyways, I ended up paying a friendly dealer 1/2 labour to add my vin to the truck radio so I have a working radio.

@@MoneyPit_on_Wheels correct! That touch screen radio AKA TNR 800 has two versions. One for the normal BOSE like the one in your Tahoe, and my 2006 GMC Yukon, and the LUX version made for the cadillac and the Yukon Denali. The one in his video is in a Escalade Cadillac. Just make sure when you buy one that it is stated as not being for y91 lux amp. You need the one for uq7 bose as found in your option codes. Wrong radio will kill the radio and amp. I had the uq7 touch screen radio in my yukon and then bought the y91 as well as upgrading the amp in the center console to the y91 for a somewhat better sound. What ever version of radio you get and decide to go with, it is a nice handsome looking unit for it's age. This mod is for people that like the OEM look.

  • @ChanceSummer

Interesting. I assume you pulled the whole chip as opposed to just disconnecting pin 8? If so, I suspect that is the problem. Again, I did not go this route because for $75 it was worth paying the dealer to program it after I knew it worked. But, in all my research it does appear that pulling the chip completely will cause this touch screen version not to work. Whereas, pulling up only pin 8 “should” work. But, I have not tested it personally. Sorry I can’t be of much more help.

  • @ChanceSummer

Thanks for the question and I’m shocked GM was still doing this stupid theftlock activated in 2012. You pretty much have 3 options these days: 1) find a buddy with a new premium OBDII tablet - the kind that can program key fobs and radios. The last I checked these are selling for around a thousand bucks. So, definitely not worth it to buy but many car clubs will share one. 2) pay a dealer 1/2 hour labour to program it - should only take 10 minutes; so this will cost around 70 bucks. 3) check Amazon for, I assume you have a double din, android radio that will plug and play. I checked just now and you have some options for around 100 bucks. If I did my Caddy today, I would put an Android unit in. They all connect to your phone so you can surf the net, watch movies on Netflix when parked, etc. They are SO cheap now it’s crazy. If you are going to toss the radio away and don’t care if you wreck it, see if you can find an article for your radio on tampering with pin 8. Just Google that and you’ll see what I mean. Hope that helps a little.
