Bypass Jeep Wrangler and Gladiator Aux Battery the Easy Way

My Jeep started giving me Stop/Start Unavailable - Service Stop/Start System warnings every time I started the Jeep. This is a very common problem with the Jeep JL and JT models.
Here's a SIMPLE, FAST, and FREE way to fix this issue!
NOTE: BASED ON MODEL AND YEAR YOU MAY HAVE TO CONNECT THE OTHER NEGATIVE BATTERY TERMINAL. MAY HAVE COMMENTED THAT THEY HAD TO CONNECT THE OTHER CABLE. IF MY METHOD DOESN'T WORK, TRY THE OTHER ONE.
The Jeep JL's and JT's have two batteries. The main battery and a small auxiliary battery for the Stop/Stop feature.
If that smaller Stop/Start battery dies, your Jeep won't start even though your main battery has a charge! So know how to bypass it if dies on the trail!
Some choose to replace the aux battery. Some choose to remove it entirely. It's located under the main battery and fuse block. The easiest way to access it is through the front passenger fender well. Just pull the fender liner and remove 3 bolts.
I opted to simply leave the aux battery in place and bypass it. It can be done in 10 minutes and costs $0!

Add me to the club. I replaced my aux battery last weekend and the new one must have not been fully charged because both batteries were dead when I went to start it 6 days later. I couldn't even jump start it. I also tried jump starting it using the first post under fuse box, which supposedly jump starts the aux battery, but the engine sputtered and died as soon as I removed the jump start cables. So thanks to this video, I removed FUSE 42 and the negative aux cable and it worked like a charm. It jump started right up and kept running after removing jump start cables. It appears the main battery is now able to recharge as it restarted after running for only a few minutes. This video was a lifesaver. Thank you for posting and for the helpful comments below.

So I decided to give it a shot, got a 2018 JLU and like everyone else was saying it's the other cable that needed to be removed. So I tried that at first, started the Jeep, and light and warning still came on. So I disconnected the other cable and tried it, but got nothing at all, reconnected the first one and low and behold the warning light doesn't come on now! Thank you!

My experience: Got in, attempted to start my 2021 JT Mojave, it would not start, nor turnover, no clicking, just some extra dash lights (check engine, and collision avoidance - associated with ACC system). Problem was a dead (10.5V) battery, and the blessing was that it was in my driveway & I wasn't stranded somewhere less safe, thanks to my wife's car as a backup. And, as with any unknown mechanical or "how to" issue, I came to KZread. What did we ever do before YT? LOL! So, apparently my AUX battery died, and eventually my main battery was taken down by the AUX. No warning. I hadn't turned on my Start/Stop switch lately, and that would've been a clue if I had noticed it not working. The batteries would've been covered by the 3/36 warranty, but I was at 37K when they died. How convenient, Mopar! So, I pulled the F42 fuse, tied off the same ground cable as illustrated in this video, installed a new main battery, and everything is back to normal, except I no longer have an operational ESS system. I'll eventually yank out the dead AUX battery, but good to go for now. Thanks!

I have a 2019 Wrangler Rubicon with the original aux battery. Yeah, it's long-in -the-tooth and is having issues. The process of replacing it shows how poorly FCA put thought on location for easier access. I'm going to try to bypass that battery per your instructions. Otherwise, it's going to be a chore either removing the fender guard or going-in from the engine compartment (and tearing apart the fuse box). Either option... I don't look forward too. 2019 JL. Pulled the fuse and the cable - and everything was dead. Put the cable back and fuse - everything was as it was with the warning light back on. Pulled just the fuse and no more warning light. Seems on some models the Aux battery handles a little something extra and not just the start stop. On others it seems it just the start stop. Removing the fuse only fixed the error message. So I am happy.

There are 2 negative battery cables. One that connects to the main battery negative terminal and one that connects the aux battery negative to the main battery negative terminal. Depending on make, model, and year of the Jeep, you may have to swap which one you disconnect. The first time I tried this, I disconnected the other cable and my Jeep wouldn't start, so I swapped and disconnected the other and it worked.

I'd suggest if you replaced both and still have the warning light on to get it looked at. I'd say maybe it's still hanging onto to error code, but the time you took to replace the main battery should have cleared that code. You can go to an AutoZone and they will run a free diagnostic. So at a minimum, you can get the error codes it's throwing.

If it's cranking, but won't start, it's probably a fuel issue. Not getting enough gas. Make sure you don't have a clogged injector. Also, if its getting some gas and you crank it that long, it'll flood the engine and also won't start. Basically it's gonna be gas, air, and or spark. Check your plugs, air filter, and injectors.

Honestly, not 100% sure, but I think you run the risk of the aux battery damaging your main battery. If the aux battery starts to die, it'll leach power from the main. I've heard of many instances where people have had to replace both when the aux battery was the cause. So I'd suggest just playing it safe and disconnecting the aux battery cable.

That's just a regular Tuesday in the summer here in Arizona. 😄 Thanks for the heads up though. I figure the car batteries are made to withstand the heat considering they are in the engine bay. I haven't heard of anyone having heat related issues. But I totally get where you are coming from. I plan on putting a secondary LiFePo4 battery mounted in the bed of my truck (in a custom enclosure) and I've been working out how to add fans and a thermostat to keep it cooler.

Sadly this did not fix the problem plus in my Rubicon it impacts other features. So I am just going to replace the battery. The Tazer takes care of turning off the start stop. Thanks for the video though.

Yup doesn’t take out mind warning light as well 21 Gladiator Rubicon 30k miles. Swapped both cable and unplugged f42 fuse. It doesn’t do anything I’m just going to buy a Tazer and replace the battery.

Maybe try having it scanned at AutoZone to get the error codes and clear any old codes

Looks like this is somewhat common on Jeeps after replacing or disconnecting the battery. Many said it cleared after a couple of days on its own. Or you could take it to Autozone to have them pull the code to see what it is and then fix or clear it.

Actually...if your main battery is still healthy, the stop start system will still activate.

True. But if the Aux battery is on it's way out, it'll drain the main battery. Many have had to replace their main battery as well because the aux battery failing to charge damaged their main. And if the aux battery fails to hold any charge and is flat, the Jeep won't start, even if the main has a charge. So my suggestion is to take care of this issue right away before it causes any long term issues. It's obviously up to the individual if they choose to replace the aux battery, remove it entirely, or simply go with the bypass method I've outlined.

@@otroverland agreed. Getting the aux battery out of the loop asap is a good thing. Just want people to not be surprised if their ess suddenly starts working after this mod.

True, you want a Tazer or SmartStopStart to disable ESS entirely. I've had the SSS installed for three years now.

With a manual transmission, stupid ASS (Auto-Start-Stop) system is easy enough to avoid... In addition to all the other conditions that the automatics have, you also need to be stopped, have the transmission in neutral, and the clutch released...

@@otroverland -- When my main battery needed replacing, I replace it with the next size up and then disconnected the aux battery... That disabled the stupid ASS system, although it does leave a warning on the panel (which I can easily ignore)... I suspect that the reason that we have the ridiculous electro-hydraulic power steering pump either because of the ASS system or because they were making provisions for their "mild hybrid" model and forced it on those of us who choose REAL engines...
