Byodo-In Temple: The Japanese Buddhist Temple in Hawaii

A travel guide for visiting the Byodo-In Temple on Oahu in Hawaii. This temple is a replica of a 950 year old temple in Japan. Byodo-in was built to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first Japanese immigrants to arrive in Hawai’i in 1868. The temple was dedicated in June of 1968 with a traditional Buddhist ceremony. Inside the temple is a nine-foot statue of a Lotus Buddha, also known as the Amida Buddha.

We stop at Byodo-In every visit to Oahu. If you manage to time your visit when there's not a huge bus tour there, it's very serene.

Brings back good memories. When I went it was pouring rain. You would think that rain would have dampened experience but it was actually really cool and peaceful. There was also a black swan near pond.

Went there last September and loved it. Unfortunately the tour was quite brief so we all only had about 50 minutes there and didn't have time to go in the temple. Great to see what it is like 😊 lovely place to visit.

I grew up about 5 minutes away, but didn't visit the temple until my 20's. Really enjoyed the obon festival there. Great food and lots to do. It's good that people learn about things outside of Waikiki. Gotta love Kaneohe.

The birds there will eat food off your hands. Buy some fish food from the gift shop. Put the fish food on your palm and, put your hand on the ground. The birds will land on your palm and eat from your hand. You can slowly stand up, and the birds will stay on your hand as it feeds. Cool photo opportunity.
