Bye for now, Pokemon Showdown

My long, unedited, rambly, semi-ranty video about why I'm qutting Pokemon Showdown, until Gen 9 comes out. Enjoy my mindless Explosion team gameplay as I ramble (with extra super ironic moment of someone proving my point at the very end)

You know what's the difference between you and other youtubers I follow? It's the fact I've always seen what you're talking about. You're more of a person than a youtuber. While I enjoy your content, whenever I watch other youtuber's stuff I'm like "ok cool, I enjoyed it", but whenever I watch your stuff I'm like "man, he's a cool dude, wish I could hang out with him". No need to stay here if you don't want to. Enjoy your life to the fullest! New meta can always wait, but only if the prophet is ready to speak about it.

I really miss seeing good old fashioned Let's Plays tbh. Like, no innate challenges, just exploring a game and sharing it with people. Closest I've seen to that lately is MDB's Let's Plays of the spinoff games like mystery dungeon and stadium.

There was one video that stood out to me as really great. Like if I were to ask one question about Pokemon is, how to be the very best. There are contests in Gen 3/4... actually, forget that. The concept of AI playing Pokemon Showdown to get the highest win rate. Very informational, but not fully there yet. Only one or two main videos from one channel really sold the idea but it isn't fully developed on KZread in my opinion. For example, the type chart can have the Chain Rule applied to it, the probability of winning an Uber Match, how stats are distributed, battle calcs, etc. WolfeyVGC does fit the category but his thoughts are confined by the video given, some opinions, and a lot of basic stuff about the meta. If you could find a niche to make information about situational RNG in each game meta like pChal that would be just as fun to watch to me.

As many others in the comment section, I respect your decision and wish you the best! As for the types of content you can create about pokemon, there's always art (like Subjectively), storytime (like CandyEvie) and while it does count towards challenges, it's still kind of interesting, reaching lv100 in weird ways (AbsolBlogsPokemon) Oh, and don't forget the TCG side of the fandom either!

Pikasprey Yellow has some vids that I think differ from the archetypes you've named. It's "soft lock picking" where he shows how to put your game in a state where you pretty much have to restart of suffer through impossibly long grind/rng to get out. Also some vids where he just straight up tries to make you suffer for as long as possible in a single battle. I think that's pretty unique.

The thing I feel like is missing from the pokè-scene of KZread is just somebody playing it to have fun. Not specifically challenges, or anything like that. They just go to whatever they want and just make a team they think is cool. That’s what I do when I play (though I don’t have a channel). I usually play natdex, but I also play vgc and doubles decently often too. Usually just make a team with some Pokémon or a monotype team, then I slowly refine the team over a bunch of matches until it works the way I want it to, and it usually ends up being interesting and fun. For example, I have a team using trumbeak and some other Mon I don’t remember I made last week, and it actually usually goes pretty well. Trumbeak with a rocky helm and heat beak is a really really strong anti-physical Mon with a 100 power stab move with a free burn on contact is sick. Most the mon on my team are off meta or whatever, and I feel like KZreadrs don’t do that. They just feel like they have to have some gimmick or point of their channel (sometimes down to their team they make too lol), but I can’t find anyone that just plays the game tbh, lol. It’s always a gimmick or something (which can be fun), but this isn’t really supposed to apply to your situation. If you don’t wanna do showdown I agree, I often feel frustrated making teams because a bunch of new OP Pokémon (which are fine IN meta) straight up casually wall like your entire team just cuz they don’t hit hard enough if you don’t use OU Pokémon cuz the creep is so hard (hence me playing natdex, it’s not as severe somehow). But no real pressure to play JUST showdown (or showdown at all), and if anyone says otherwise who cares they can’t tell you what to do just breakdance on them fools. Okay, but I do have recommendations for cool games. OFF by Mortis Ghost is a REALLY sick rpg game you can get for free, hunt showdown is a really cool PvEvP game. Terraria/starbound, Don’t Starve, and Spore would be fun to watch (I would love to see you play spore), Death Road to Canada is an amazing game, Lethal League Blaze is a critically underrated game, Strider, RainWorld (fantastic game), SCP Containment Breach, and such. That’s the end of my rant-ply, hope it was interesting/helped anything

I think any difference btwn channels w/in each quadrant would be personality. The content does become repetitive eventually, so I think personality is one of the biggest things that lets a channel stand out and brings ppl back. But oftentimes, it's tough for personality to seep through the content. This channel does a good job showcasing your personality, so that's great! Your music was actually the biggest thing that drew me in to subscribe some years ago though, lol.

Mmm, it is nice to take breaks from such tedious tasks. Especially when they get boring. National dex meta is indeed very unchanging. I think Showdown is unhealthy for anyone normal to be honest. I've completely stopped playing. I would come back maybe once a month to try again but it was the same. Getting fucked by RNG and having games constantly stolen from you to a 1 in 100 chance while god comes down and hands your opponent the win on a silver platter with unholy luck. It can be fun, but the fact you easily lose if you get rolled by rng is so infuriating, especially when it happens so often. It is soooooo draining and emotionally exhausting to try to enjoy something that is just so genuinely terrible most of the time. That and insane GOOFY power creep with zacian and calyrex. There's just no way to actually enjoy it when it becomes so stale and requires so much effort just to try to get yourself to enjoy it slightly. Edit: Also, the increasingly broken mechanics. It's so irritating to know a well placed dynamax you haven't prepared for can easily lead into a sweep of your entire team, same goes for new legendaries being added.

Pokemon is definitely stale and especially showdown. Maybe in a while after you've had time if you feel the desire if gen 9 is good you could try to plaay through the actual game with weird new meta strategies, whatever interests you. I think the way youtube works now is people come for the person instead of the content, and I think most people can subconsciously tell when someone isn't enjoying something. As long as it's paced decently and something you genuinely care about, I think you have a strong viewerbase that will enjoy it.

Hey. I agree gen 8 content is just.. repetitive. Very, very repetitive. And I do agree that there are some things that have become "meta" on KZread as a platform. All the things you mentioned included. It's more like a corporate business running a channel, and the competition has become absolutely unhealthy. It just.. ain't fun anymore. The crux of this is that yes, I understand. We, as your fans, I hope, understand. Take your time, chillax, and have fun in whatever you do. Also, as a suggestion for new games, how about Deltarune or Undertale playthroughs? Although Undertale's kinda "outdated" now, I would still recommend playing it if you haven't.

Garbo, if you ever come back, you should try some of the off-normal metas. Like AAA, hackmons etc. AAA is basically why I still stick to showdown

I like your vids where you have a good time more. I think they provide more entertaining videos. There was a showdown vid you did where you kept saying you didn't care about the outcomes and that one was fun to watch imo. I like you, not showdown. You're totally right about pokemon videos being hard to make entertaining, your showdown vids are the only ones I watch.

I stopped watching showdown videos in general a long time ago for all of the stale, unbalanced, brainless reasons you've stated. I can't agree more with so many points of this video. I can't stand the salt videos because I think at some point you just become a troll looking for a reaction, and it has nothing to do with clever gameplay. The only reason I've kept watching your videos is because it's genuinely nice listening to you, regardless of the details of the content. You're just such a respectable person. I've stuck with freezai as well if he counts, but he's branching away from showdown as well, and I love to see it. I've been waiting for you to get bored of showdown for a long time now. I know it sucks for you to let go, but I'm really excited for what comes next. I've come across your music before and I love it. I'm obsessed with elden ring right now, and would be so hyped to see you play it. Cheers to the future!

In my opinion, everything went downhill after generation 5. Gen 5 OU was a mess as well, but the generation as a whole was a lot of fun. Gen 6 was cool, but mega evolutions were poorly distributed, and mega Rayquaza is mega Rayquaza. Gen 7 is ok as well in terms of Pokémon design, but Z-moves are a guaranteed KO if used normally. Legendaries (asides from U-Necrozma) were great in my opinion, and the regional variants were a great idea, although they could’ve actually named them something properly that’s not putting the Region’s name in front of the Pokémon. Gen 8, in my opinion, is ass. I think that Dynamax/Gigantamax is a garbage battle gimmick, Zacian is Zacian, the stupid ghost horse, Eternatus, the balance is wack. Long story short, I think gen 3 to 5 were probably the most fun for me, with then everything going downhill rather quickly. Edit: I agree with the Pokémon animation being lame in the main games. Ive said it a lot of times, Pokémon Battle Revolution from 2006 has had the best Pokémon animations from any turn-based Pokémon game. They have a ton of personality. The sprites may not look amazing, but it’s more entertaining to watch this old game that sadly has crappy music and a somewhat annoying announcer, than watching basically any main series Pokémon game.

I can get what you're saying, for a few last months i feel like pokemon is becoming more and more bland and boring. Like when i watch videos from showdown, nuzlockes other challanges etc most of the time i feel like i watch the same thing just diffrent voice (of youtuber) with you was whole other thing and I'll be honest maybe your videos weren't top tier i could see i watch a human who puts effort to make this stuff and always was excited to make something new and it worked i stayed here for 4 years and i don't haven't once a thought it was waseted time. So thank you for making videos and hope youtube won't punish you for doing other games
