By train from St. Moritz to the Matterhorn - The Glacier Express | DW Documentary

A trip on the Glacier Express is one of the world’s best-known railway journeys. For nearly 90 years, traveling on the "world’s slowest express train" has been one of the most thrilling - and comfortable - ways to discover the Alps.
The journey begins in chic St. Moritz, birthplace of the Alpine winter vacation - in winter, of course. Here, Hans Peter Danuser gives us a blast on his "alphorn,” a famed local instrument. In the 1980s, the former spa director of St. Moritz used this very horn to promote the Glacier Express in New York.
After pulling out of St. Moritz, the train travels through the Albula Tunnel. On the other side, the train rumbles down to Thusis on the Albula Line, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Harmoniously embedded in the landscape, the route is considered the showpiece of the railway era.
Several spiral tunnels help the train manage the 1,000-meter hike in altitude. On the way up to Bergün, passengers might even start feeling a bit dizzy! Finally, the train passes the "most beautiful place in Switzerland”, the Lai de Palpuogna mountain lake.
The Glacier Express then makes its way slowly towards Chur, via Switzerland’s most famous railway bridge, the Landwasser Viaduct. The spa town is a great place to learn about the meaning of the word "Waschweib” - literally, "washerwoman”, colloquially, "gossip”.

I'm the international sales manager at Rhaetian Railway - one of the two railway companies who run the Glacier Express together. Being responsible for Asia-Pacific, I am more than happy to travel back to Asia again this Monday to promote our beautiful railway lines. Switzerland is much less fun without all our international guests. I am very excited to have you all back after more than two years of this pandemic... Rhaetian Railway welcomes you! 雷蒂亞鐵路歡迎你們來到瑞士!

@@vcom2327 Precisely. The biggest and most criminal mistake the global WTO made, was allowing China entrance into the WTO. Today there are HOARDES of Chinese tourists clogging up already congested tourist areas - not to mention the profound health implications and dangers by opening up China - a country well-known (even before COVID) - as an incubator for deadly respiratory viruses - such as SARS, and lethal strains of Influenza over the years. Heck, the bubonic plague originated in the Orient and was brought back to Europe on merchant ships!

Just make sure to get first class. You would believe the mess they allow in second. It's unimaginable after seeing how neat Switzerland is. A densely packed crowd of messy tourists with a ton of bags and suitcases between them. Also keep in mind the trip is incredibly long and 90% of it is boring. It was totally worth it for me but its definitely not as advertised. And scenes shown in promos you can't see or take pictures of if you don't stick your head out, which is physically impossible. The panoramic windows also have fog and oily stripes so photos taken through are very flawed...

As a self-professed connoisseur of train documentaries (that is, documentaries following railways) I am always excited when I see a new upload that I've not previously watched. By the way, some of the best train documentaries I have watched on KZread in the past have been from DW. The video is an amazing documentary film....well done! The coverage of the Swiss Alps are exceptional. We enjoyed the journey (Glacier Express and Bernina Express) for the third time last October 2021 and it reminded us our great memories dating back to our first time in Switzerland as foreign students at University of Lausanne more than 30 years ago. The glacier that we have known and seen back then versus now is so sad; however, no where else on earth is better protected their environments more so than Switzerland.

Why was everything huge finished in the first 30 years oh last century? I'm thinking also of Hoover Dam and the Pentagon and the Empire State Building as well as all of these projects shown in Europe on KZread. Good idea or not, I blush at Americans think they could not buill a water delivery system from the Mississippi to the West Coast. So the first part of our current century builds tiny circuit boards----- I think of grandpa who handbuilt so many tunnels and maybe even the Panama Canal.

That depends on the type of rock. In the Alps you usually find granite, which is incredibly hard. Tunnel boring machines are generally unable to bore through such rock effectively due to extremely high degradation of the stone cutters.

i might be wrong, but I think it’s the individual countries that make a video unavailable in that country. I don’t think the maker of the video has anything to do with that. When someone makes a video, they want as many people to view it as possible. Why would they block it out in certain countries?
