I saw Season Two (on PBS) without realizing there was a season one until it was mentioned in passing during one of the intros. It was so good I never would have suspected there was an entire season before it. I didn't have the opportunity to see the first season until decades later (on KZread).

The series, created by John Hawkesworth, was a historical drama set during the mid-17th century, dealing with the impact of the English Civil War on the fictional Lacey family, made up of both Royalist and Parliamentarian supporters. It follows the family as it is torn apart by the conflicting and changing loyalties of the war, as families were during that time, and the defeat of the Royalist forces at the end of the First English Civil War. Series two covers the second and third civil wars and the eventual Restoration of the Monarchy. The last episodes see the surviving members of the family (from both sides of the divide) witness the arrival of King Charles II on a visit to the ancestral Lacey home.

I did in enjoy Mary & George about King James & his lover , James V1 & 1 . As for production wonderful cast obviously huge money put into it yet at the same time. I’d absolutely adore these 70s 80s productions are so wonderful beautifully acted don’t have all the money behind them but yet they’re like Pure theatre plays such a treat

What is a king, exactly? From where does his authority come? To what extent is opposition to his dictates justified? What if the nation also has an elected body to govern it? Which authority triumphs? By the seventeenth century, these issues were boiling over. Divine rule was no longer accepted without question.

Because now they have to sell to overseas. Americans are notorious for insisting on at least a couple of their own, they like what they know. We used to laugh along to the awful made-for-television 'films' of the 1980's, how they would shoehorn in the American actors - usually the rich American buying an enormous English country house is the setting for the murder or romance! 😂 It's not as though many home grown actors can really speak properly anyway. Watching younger actors trying to sound 'posh' is just stressful.

They are well done. And the women's makeup is a fraction of what we'd have now, and the natural hair colours. It's a softness that modern casting doesn't even know it should try for. It all makes such a difference.

Not sure tbh. They spent the budget on costumes rather than overpriced actors, but I think that the budgets were probably quite modest compared to now..they couldn't replicate the standard now for many reasons. Primarily that they have to be able to sell the series abroad, America mainly,so have to pitch at a very different level and content. We have to have the obligatory sex scenes, however implausible and unnecessary, and some violence is a bonus. Preferably some sort of who-dunnit murder as a sub plot. Then the costumes are usually awful, without the proper undergarments, the female costumes are always misshapen, and the actresses are too vain to cover their heads as would be authentic. They also have obviously dyed hair, bleached teeth , orange skin and aggressive body language. All of which screams 21st century. As if the aggressive posture isn't odd enough in period costumes the dialogue is so awful now, having to pander to a tick list of modern sensibilities. The scene with the daughter defying her father which was rather briefer than one would expect to be realistic would be full of little speeches along the lines of Disney you -can-be-anything-you-want twaddle that we're supposed to tell our children to boost their self esteem 🙄 Then we'd have to have a couple of black noblemen and an openly gay priest to round things off, with no-one actually being able to speak properly but all forcing themselves to speak 'posh'. I very very rarely watch any dramas made after the turn of the century, just too painful.Dickens, Austin, Brontë,Hardy and Gaskell must spin in their graves!
To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time Robert Herrick Gather ye Rose-buds while ye may, Old Time is still a-flying: And this same flower that smiles to day, To morrow will be dying. The glorious Lamp of Heaven, the Sun, The higher he's a getting; The sooner will his Race be run, And neerer he's to Setting. That Age is best, which is the first, When Youth and Blood are warmer; But being spent, the worse, and worst Times, still succeed the former. Then be not coy, but use your time; And while ye may, go marry: For having lost but once your prime, You may forever tarry.[1]
