HAVING BEEN A PASSENGER ON AN 18 WHEELER I CAN RELATE TO THIS TRUCKERS TIRE FIRE. I USED TO RIDE ON MY BROTHERS J B HUNT TRACTOR 1997-2004, HAD TO QUIT AS MY LUNGS GOT SCREWED UP FROM ALL THE DIESEL FUMES. WE HAD REAR TIRE ON THE TRAILER BLOW AND IT STARTED A FIRE, OF WHICH WE GOT OUT USING THE 4 EXTINGUISHERS WE HAD THE TRACTOR . WE STILL HAD THE LOCAL FIRE DEPT. CHECK IT OUT THOUGH,M NEVER CAN BE TOO SAFE. I HAVE A HIGH RESPECT FOR VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS. THE TOWN I LIVE IN, IN SOUTHWEST IOWA, MILLS COUNTY, GLENWOOD, FIRE DEPT., IS VOLUNTEER. I ENJOY YOUR VIDEO'S AND THE WORK YOU ALL DO KEEPING THE PUBLIC SAFE. BE SAFE EVERYONE.

Shot water on top of the roof when there was no fire there was another fire department that got in between the alleyway and another fire department got most of it because they were on the roof because the fire exploded out on the roof and they also got inside it but still my dad said if those idiots knew how to put out a fire he said the building would of still been there!

MY ROWN HAS A VOLUNTEER SERVICE, BUT HERE IN IOWA THEY ARE REQUIRED TO GO FIREFIGHTER TRAINING AT THE STATE OF IOWA ACADEMY. OUR CHIEF IS PAID EMPLOYEE, THE REST ARE ALL VOLUNTEERS. WE HAVE A TOWN OF 5,678 PEOPLE AND WE ARE THE COUNTY SEAT, FOR MILLS COUNTY, IN SOUTHWEST IOWA.

Some times the return spring in the air brake pot fails and the brake stays on a bit It gets the brakes hot but not enough drag to notice till it's smoking Some times the slack adjuster is set to tight and the brake can drag The diaphragm or air line to the brake pot has a leak and can apply the brake just a bit too.

+Fireman Anyone who has not drove before shouldn't comment things like this. Its stupid, and then you go and make yourself look stupid. These doubles are equipped with air brakes. Not only did I drive a a pumper for 3 different counties, I also drive a W900 L for Atlas Van Lines. If you are a "Fireman" then educate yourself.

fenderbass15 agree very horrible engine placement if there were flammable liquids in that LTL trailer it could had poured out ot the trailer it would had made the engine part of the fire. Plus by parking upramp of the trailer they could had closed the ramp from traffic. Yes, I am a retired firefighter and now work for the highway department. As will as I used to drive LTL (Less than Trailer. Load) which can have multiple small shipments from different shippers with hazardous material less than the 1001lbs required for a placard.

A little close in for a truck tire, at least be off at an angle. The pumper should have been placed past the truck, but NOT blocking all off-ramp traffic, just squeezing them over a bit to protect a safety corridor for the nozzleman. The possibl limited sight distance coming down the off-ramp might have caused a rear ender. Always be conscious of sight distance on a road with any grade or curves before blocking it off entirely as some suggest here. If it must be bloced, send someone with a flag or cone further enough back that oncoming traffic has time to slow before coming over a rise or around a blind curve.

I have 32 years on the job and I have to say probably one of the most unsafe place to park a engine, Way to close, Not to mention in front of a burning truck which could loose its breaks since they are air, Another reason is now the fire crew is at risk of being hit by on coming traffic, These days people don’t care they get scared and fly by a burning vehicle and might not see you, Should’ve pull behind the tractor trailer blocking the off ramp giving you guys protection and to stop the flow of traffic and a buffer. I know y’all are volunteers but you’re still firefighters and the number one rule is to go home after an incident, I really hope your safety officer or BC gave a AAR of what “Not” to do. Other then that good stop on the fire

Only one thing I have to correct in your comment, if a truck loses air, it will not move. The brakes are released by air and also applied by air ( confusing i know), but when air is lost, very very high tension springs in the brake chambers apply the brakes ( normally air pressure keeps these compressed). Anyway, the truck will not move ( 36 years as a driver and 26 as a FF/EMT). Also noticed that there was a Highway Incident Response Truck blocking the ramp, so they were covered from that end. Not knowing what he may have been hauling ( these guys haul all kinds of hazmat and flammables), it's probably best to keep the engine away from the fire and near the front of the truck just in case.

Why park behind? Think if the truck and trailer breaks fail. Than you got a run away truck + fire. If you put your truck there, than, yes, it will hit the truck. At least not a runaway truck. Right?

blondie02 78 I spent summers working for Department of Interior on forest fire crews. Try 3 to 12 hours enroute to a fire. Granted those longs rides were without lights and siren but I can relate to the fact that since over 60% of the USA fire departments are volunteer and many with large areas of coverage. Long rides are more common than short intercity responses.
