Buzz Osborne tells us about the very first Melvins tour.

In this episode Buzz tells us about the first Melvins tour with southern California hardcore band RKL. They encounter filthy accommodations, acid trips, arrests and skinheads. Right when the tour comes to an abrupt end, Buzz witnesses the unimaginable in a Brooklyn phone booth that changes his perspective on tour and life in general. Music by Buzz Osborne and Joe Plummer.

Barry Ward: "I remember first meeting the Melvins in El Paso in ‘86 on RKL’s “Disastour”. We liked them and dragged them with us through SE to NYC all broke as hell trudging through crazy places breaking down and starving. Then we canceled in NY. Prob never forgave us. But they went to greatness... The van the Melvins drove on that tour was the van Kurt Cobain had made a small Kiss mural on. In one truck stop somewhere some lady came up and said, “Wow are you guys Kiss?” We said, sure, they’re Kiss as they laughed and nodded. Ha ha."

I have a flyer from a show in Kansas City, MO from maybe '85 at the Foolkiller Theater. RKL and Melvins. I talked about it with a friend and we remember seeing RKL but not Melvins. Still a mystery...

This is Barry from RKL and I’m going to say Buzz is 100% full of shit about our stay at my parents house in Houston on RKL’s “Disastour” in 1986. And I thought he was my friend always and we have kind of kept in touch over the years. And I have great respect for them and their longevity kicking ass reinventing themselves constantly. It’s been an awesome ride following their career. Don’t why he made up that story for this video to make me out to be such a dick. My parents were out of town at the time. Abso-fucking-lutly out of town. They did not make the Melvins breakfast the next morning much to my dismay as an unaccommodating shitty host. My parents would have revisited that story with me over the years if it had happened. It did not! I had a moment of self doubt after seeing this, I asked my step dad and Chris Rest and they don’t remember that either. Plus I would not have been such a dick. I wanted to keep it cool at my folks house and not trash the place since they always questioned my life’s decisions at the time anyway. They would have been mostly accommodating since they were the sweetest people and as tolerant of us scuzzy punkers as they could be, but would have questioned an entourage of 9 or 10 people. We were young and a bunch of ragers and RKL was bad enough, I’d only known the Melvins since El Paso so maybe I was reluctant to have so many people there but I certainly welcomed them and I thought we had a great time. What happened was we all took acid and got a bit rowdy like we did, fucking with each other and I guess we scared the Melvins. I remember picking up a cockroach and throwing it at Buzz and it landed in his hair. Living in Texas ya get used to roaches. We then got a little sleep, got up and cleaned up our mess before my parents got home from their vacation and we hit the road. I don’t remember renting John Water’s Desperate Living on my parents credit card then telling them to return it which in turn they threw in the garbage. I would have heard about that later. I don’t even think my parents had a VCR in 1986. I guess I can give Buzz creative props for making up a shit ton of bullshit for this video that perhaps his acid influenced memory conjured up. I’m not sure he dosed with us either that night but I’m 100% sure this story is bullshit and don’t know what I did to deserve being dragged over the coals all these years later. I got along with them fine on that tour. We swapped tapes and sent each other photos from the tour and we’ve always been cool every time I’ve run into them. As an amateur screenwriter and or occasional writer of sorts I know that conflict is what drives a story. You always need a hero and a villain. But that story is bullshit. Maybe cockroaches in the hair affects memories somehow? His giant cockroach flying over the band or feeding a cockroach to hungry fish at some filthy chicks Houston pigsty included? Now get off my lawn you fucking punks.

@@getsome4806yeah? First one of his since I got into him that I didn't bother going to see in the theater. I hated the two before that, tbh. Inherent Vice and The Phantom Thread. I remember thinking I'd catch Licorice Pizza on Amazon or whatever, and then totally forgot it was even a thing. No good?
