If in circa 1980's you asked Porsche to conceive and build a Rolls-Royce, the Mercedes benz W126 would have been the answer! Power without the temperament, imperial but measured. Over-engineered & nothing wasted. Germanic to a fault but also elegant in ways that neither its predecessor nor successor could manage. There is nothing quite like these cars: the chunk-sound made when closing the doors tells you that the minute you step in. The smooth power, effortless mile-eating ability, super-high quality interior which feels like it was hewn out of stone and serene silence has never quite been surpassed by Mercedes ever again. These really are truly the last great Benz's: engineered to perfection with no electrics to hide 'mistakes'. They will never be engineered, designed or built like this again!

So true and that is actually quite sad in a way. Mercedes Benz can deliver so much better than it's doing nowadays..

I had a 1987 420 SEC in New Zealand from 2002 until 2010. Best car I ever owned - always remembered fondly.

I bought a 1991 350SDL W126 the last year of production. It is number 1,745 of the 1,790 350 SDL's ever made. I saved it from the crusher for $325.00!! It is in very good condition, just giving it alot of TLC. I work on the classic's, so for me it's a labor of love to bring it back to as original as possible! It is also my daily driver. The owner just thought it was old and worth nothing to him, he was SO VERY WRONG! I also have a 1974 450SE, a 1980 300SD, a 1996 E320, a 1999 E320. I truly love each and every one and will have them till the day i die.

Handsome, charming and simple. W126 are great. Facelift 300se best looking of the lot.

Just got a 91 300sel from my coworker for $1200. Has 120k miles and the thing inside and out is a 9.5 out of 10. So happy with it

I just picked up a 1 owner 87 300sdl with excellent body and interior. Compression test was 430 to 460 on all 6 cylinders. Paid $500 It was on its way to the salvage yard because owner thought transmission was bad. The vacuum line to transmission was bad and needed shift bushings. These are fabulous cars. No other mass produced car will ever match this standard of quality and excellence. Untill you have put some miles on one it is impossible to truly the automotive masterpiece of these cars.

I own a 1989 420 SEL W126 and I love driving it. I purchased it privately in 2011. My wife has correctly pointed out that if I purchased a new Merc { in which I could not anyway fit due to my 196 cm height } I would ask for my old Merc back.

In my generation, IMHO it's the best Benz ever built along with the W124 🏆 🥂

@@johnnorvaisas this generation S class is one of the best ever built. But due to age parts can fail. I would do a proper inspection by a mechanic before purchasing the car. And vehicle history and maintenance is also important
