I started with a narrow nose Pete in 1970 when I got back from Nam. I took my money and vested in a truck and not being a long haul driver (too young for the experience) and only thing that saved me was I got hit in the frontend by a dock machine that killed it sheetmetal wise. I got my monthly payments covered and then something powerful intervened. A man who was a major logger in the area approached me with if we fix then you haul for us and we guarantee your truck payments. I couldn't shake his hand quick enough as I loved the truck like a girlfriend kinda. Come home with the new style doors, handles in the corner, chrome air filters, Wide nose hood, and radiator, all engine components working good again. The man was good of his word and kept me almost too busy. I finished the hand shake and stayed till a divorce cost me my truck and home. I couldn't live in a conventional and so I sold it to a fellow who had his eye on it for a long time and I had over three hundred thousand an no in frame or transmission work, second clutch but almost same water as it came with it felt like as it just ran and ran. I had a five and four so it wasn't the most popular but in and out, it was always clean and right... kept things right on it all the way and learned enough to keep my nose out of trouble. Years later tried it again and fell in love with a dark grey K.W. with large sleeper, 3406, thirteen and a air shift four speed brownie and with two speed rears and slider fifth wheel. I just knew that would be home! I got a bowling ball through the windshield that if my girlfriend had been setting there would of died. It went through the glass off the hood and into the sleeper just under her. I got top money for the truck and was going to go hunting for a while.... but she talked me out of it. We went to alaska and spent a good life together but something always takes my girl away so she has been gone now close to eleven years. I am a cripple and watch you build stuff and get a lot excited so thanks for sharing

The “steam” from the coolant reservoir most likely compression in the cooling system from either a cracked cylinder head, blown head gasket, or the air compressor pushing compression into the cooling system. I’d unhook/ block off the air compressor coolant lines and if compression in the coolant goes away, all you need is a compressor! Unfortunately it’s usually a head gasket from lack of compression on the gasket due to the cylinder liners wearing down into the block.

@Andy Armstrong ,, the crankcase blowby is a much more serious issue ,,this engine has had an overheating issue Hence the PULLED THERMOSTATS ,,the crankcase blow by is caused by compression loss through the piston rings ,and listening to it running my ears tell me it has at least 2 cylinders that are not up to spec the new cylinder head may be the result of something like a dropped valve although not common with cat engines much more suspect that it overheated and had a cracked head ,,and i'd be willing to bet it's got a cracked sleeve too ,,could be a warped block ,or just a bad headgasket ,,reason i wouldn't suspect the compressor is because it looks like a new one

Blowby is not bad, not great, but not bad. I agree with Evan about the head gasket. It needs the liner protrusion checked when the head is off for the gasket. Might have to shim up a liner to get things into line so that head gaskets will stay put. ;-) Cheers all

If liner protrusion is close to the minimum CAT sells a .0015” thinner spacer plate. Usually new liners and the thinner plate brings them to the top of spec. Right around .005”-.006” protrusion. I would only shim if they aren’t square in the block.

That steam comming out of the radiator vent tube could be a head gasket issue, possible cracked liner, or a cracked cylinder head. Best thing to do is use a napa block checker and verify if it's getting combustion gas in the cooling system. If so, you need to determine the the source, either way the outcome is an engine tear down and with 700,000 miles it's time for new lines and a liner protrusion check. Block may need to have counterbores cut and have shims stacked under the liner. 😬 Might be time for a Platinum overhaul.

That vapor/coolant coming from the overflow hose is from a blown head gasket. I just had mine blow in December 2019 with 700,000 original miles on a 2WS CAT (pretty much same engine as a 6NZ). The liners walk around in the block and the liner protrusion gets messed up. The gaskets blow between the cylinders and combustion gasses pressurize the cooling system. The bad thing about the liners moving is it does damage to the block and head. I had to have my block machined. Liners were damaged and pitted. Head needed resurfacing. Ended up doing a platinum overhaul at the cost of 18 grand

keep in mind that the air compressor uses engine coolant for cooling. if the seal goes bad, it can put air pressure into the cooling system causing that over flow tube to do just what you saw. i have never seen one push air into the crank case through the oil return but i suppose it is possible. that could cause the heavy blow-by also. could have been misdiagnosed when they put the head on. disconnect both in and out coolant hoses from the compressor and connect to each other or pinch them off. start the truck and look for the symptoms to go away. does the truck shut right off when you turn the key off or does it continue to spin for a few revolutions? one of the detectable differences in a tight engine and a worn out engine. it sure fired up like a "tight" engine. hard to tell in the video.

If it’s pressurizing the coolant tank it’ll be either air compressor head leaking or head gaskets, do a combustion leak test on the coolant tank and that’ll tell you immediately which it is, on the blow by deal, a lot of these trucks have blow by and run perfectly fine, see if you can find if it’s ever been rebuilt, but it sounds like it runs fine

It’s a nice truck, but when my cat did that, it was about 35k to rebuild. They said it was the piston rings and don’t quote me on this part, but I believe they also said it was an oiler that sits under every piston. A platinum rebuild kit is costly. But if you do the work yourself I would say 15k to 18k for all parts to do a rebuild on it.

Still anything can be repaired, though not everything should be.

I don't see them where I live now, in VA. Looks like 18speed to me not 13 speed usually 18speed has gray splitter and 13 is red....but for what your going to use it for I wouldn't touch it just because cat is expensive to work on and it definitely needs engine work steaming out of overflow tube means head gasket cracked head or block maybe even liner pushing pressure into cooling system

1400 are what kill cats. Cats power is 1500 to 1700. The oil pump on cat doesn't keep up at those low rpms and is why some many thinking like you send rods throw the block...
