BUYING MORE PEA PUFFERS + NEW FISH FOR THE AMAZON BIG SHALLOW

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

You guys told me I should get more pea puffers, so let's go! I also lost some fish in the amazon big shallow, so I want some new dwarf cichlids for that tank as well.

So at 15:07 you can see the upper streamlined puffer is a male with clean spots and the lower one is female, more Zepplin shaped and the green is much more muddled and spots less defined. I have 2 females and 1 male and they torment each other for a few minutes now and again but play nice the rest of the time the females tend to stick together and the male swims around on his own. Mine won't eat any frozen food other than bloodworms, they go for any of the live foods though.

SIGH of relief that the Pea Puffers all got along fine. Sometimes, lone fish, even ones that shoal, become somewhat antisocial towards their own kind after a while. It's good to see your intros all went smoothly.

In my experience with pea puffers(have a tank with 6): they do eat shrimplets, but if they have been with adult shrimps from the beginning they usually won't eat (much) of them. However, be careful because they are extremely dirty, they produce a lot of phosphate waste and any tank I put them in would get a lot of brush algae.

Hey MJ check the copper value in your tank and tap water I know the Netherlands has a limit of 1mg per liter but when water is standing still in copper lines this can raise quickly. Also most houses in nl have copper water lines copper is super toxic for aquarium fish. That you add RO water is great to reduce any toxicity in the water column

I keep my puffers with shrimps, they don't bother amano shrimp at all. In fact I think the amano bother them sometimes, really active. I think you'll have baby shrimp eaten but if the colony establish it would just be good extra live food and enrichment for the puffers and you'll still get colony growth.

a lot of large drift wood pieces do get "scrubbed" through sandblast or brush sanding. the brush bits do tend to have heavy metal dusts that get imbedded in the wood tend to have heavy metals that could slowly leach into water column. but i think that may have had an impact on all the fish not just one or two types.

Regarding the Apistos. A really good way to keep the water soft and acidic for them is to have some peat clay in the filter. It keeps the water soft, just the way they like it. I used this method to keep and breed many different varieties of Apisto. The only way the ever died was from old age or occasionally aggression.

Idk if it’s absolutely necessary, but I’ve heard you have more success breeding Apistogrammas with coconut 🥥 husks or clay jars. It’s something about the specific diameter of the entrance where the male can’t fit but the female just barely can. Maybe if you look more into it you can find it useful.

I think you may have the same problem I had with Apistogramma - they like to jump out. I have two tanks with different parameters but all controlled with tests and all parameters were fine. One was specially prepared for Apistogramma for breading, pH lowered etc. only one pair was in a tank and the male jumped out and I found it on the floor. In my big tank also pair of Apistogramma cockatoo jumped out. I know you didn't find it anywhere, but as far as I remember you have a cat in your flat...? Maybe this is the reason?

  • @Boja23
    @Boja23 Жыл бұрын

@MJ, it could have been bad breeding stock for why the apistos died. I ordered 4 different "strains" of fish this summer (2 sets of 6 platy, 2 sets of 6 swordtail), and lost all of 1 group of mickey mouse platys. The other strain of mixed platys went on to flourish (currently spitting out babies and population has doubled). 6 koi swordtails turned into 100 over the summer, while the other 6 red/white swordtails did not multiply at all. All were in the same pond, so I chalk it up to the stock. It's interesting when comparing strains/species when everything else is equal.

@@SamFran I have same type not from superfish but all handheld ph readers are the same. When you go to permanent digital used for real-time readings one that's hanging in your sump or in your tank at all times those need to be recalibrated ones every week this is kinda handy if you have discus and want to maintain the parameters with say auto dosing of minerals like pH up/down or in most tanks dosing fertilizer. Again the handheld ph readers are great and accurate if calibrated properly and regularly.

@@MJAquascaping Thanks. Looking forward to it! I have very controversial information how much you should have in how big aquarium in order to avoid aggression in between them. Yet im planning to have 3 of them in 30 liter, and if i remember clearly you have 3 also, so it will be interesting to see how the things are. Keep up with the quality videos! 😊

Hey! I plan on getting 3 pea puffers for my 10 gallon heavy planted tank. Any tips for a person looking to start getting these guys?

I think maybe breeding aggression thats what happened. I bred wild caught apisto panduro in my tap water ph 7.5. But using ro water can't hurt

my personal experience with pea puffer: 1. they can live together in a group only if they grew up together. if not, they will murder each others. adult pea puffers that have grown accustomed to being alone do not like new pea puffer tank mates, they are capable of biting chunks of flesh from each others 2. never had any experience of mine harassing other tankmates, i have had them together with otto, hillstream loach, amano shrimp, cherry shrimp, guppy, ...etc 3. to my surprise, they love to eat baby brine shrimp

Yeah it slowly disappears, but I find that the alder cones keep releasing tannins for a while

Don't know if this can be useful, i've read that checkerboard cichlids spawn in very very acidic water 5 for example

My pea puffers have killed each other off until there was just 1, then I put an otto in there to keep him company, and the last puffer killed him off too. I don't like mean fish, so this is the last pea puffer I'll keep.

If you feed them enough, they're not aggressive. The shope I work in sometimes has 25 of em in a 30L. There's permanently food inside their tank to snack on, never had any deaths or even nipped fins

@@ukkiesc5087 I'll divulge into something else I don't like, they really only eat blood worms. My snail population crashed so that was not an option from early on...some would go after and eat live baby brine. Freeze dried blood worms would work too. Feeding was consistently 3x a day since I work from home. They're voracious. In fact, so voracious I found no remnants of any of the fish eaten. We will see how the one final one holds up, I expect a long healthy life, but they are not too cool to other fish.

My very brief research on Checkerboard Cichlids threw up this: ".....and be aware that the tank should have a tight fitting cover, as these fish can jump." Are you aware/concerned about this?
