I skated with your average cheap skates $80 or so for about 4 or 5 years before I got the roller blade twister edge for Christmas. I’m loving them too, and love how much ankle support there is. You’ll find that on cheaper skate, there is no support, and it’s really hand to do tricks.

I cant stress enough to buy the right size. The liners do stretch out and sometimes you will wish you had a snugger fit and buying a half size or even full size lower than what you wear is smart.

As simple as this info is, I wish that I had seen it before buying my first skates in August. I bought a pair of Rollerblade Macroblade 80 and have had no issues with them, they are actually a great recreational skate but I quickly realised that they weren't supportive or upgradeable enough for me as I was getting into street skating. I have since bought a pair of FR1's and upgraded them with endless 80's and that setup is perfect for me.

start your engineering journey with understanding the biomechanics of the foot for walking and how it’s fundamentally different than the need for stable power transfer into a ridgid boot for skating. good boot would equal bad skates and good skates would equal horrible boots. but if you can solve the mobility needs of a foot/ankle for walking while not undermining stability and power transfer you maybe can invent something special. i’d love to see it, very skeptical though since there’s a reason we make so many different specialized tools, right tool for the job kinda thing.

I got back into blading recently after a few years of not doing it. Took a bit to get my balance and such back. When I was done for the day, my instep/top of foot was aching. Not sure if that was because the tendons and such got worked out or the fit of the boot wasn't good enough.

A question in a bit of a story... Been skating inline 4 wheel average beginner boot... ever since I decided the square rollerblade wheels put too many bruises on my butt... so 8yrs old. I do everything from barely aggressive trick here and there... to marathon non-competitive now... the reason I had such a good experience was definitely because the bearings were exceptional on the basic beginner boot I had been given. (Hand down from parent that just happened to fit.) Don't know the specs now because I eventually trashed those in my steps towards my imaginary greatness... but now I want to upgrade. I've purchased a few inline skates since then but kept within the clerk recommended as long as it fit and was comfy... I'd just test them out while wearing them and try to feel for the specs I'm only now able to put names to... but none have impressed me like my first pair that felt like I had wings. Learning that there is so much more to know about skates before an impulse purchase is immense and I am looking for advice. I want to switch to 3 wheel upgradable frames 110 with at least 78A hardness. I'm absolutely trash at backwards skating as I stick my butt out lol.. but it's my only real downfall at this point when I want to turn sharper, but go faster both indoor and outdoor. I enjoy an almost ice-skating looking...uh...beauty? To my moves and patterns. I was looking around and saw frames that had an asymmetrical and regular symmetrical frame (they looked like batman and I'm in nerd love so it caught my attention.) But I had no idea what the significance of the middle wheel being closer to the back wheel and creating a larger gap between it and front wheel ..had. I was also hoping for your own recommendation for what you think would be a good brand or anything else that might aid my purchase. Greatly appreciated. (Would like to stay within a $100-250usd range...also would really like a 9 spec bearing .. the ideal for anything above the ABC's type bearings into more icf? Was it?) So... what are those frames about and what do you recommend? Thanks for the vids!

I ended up ordering some skates from Canada. Sizing my feet was a little hard. I used their suggestions with measuring the length of my feet in MM to get a size EU 43. I'm in California, and use to getting US sizes. The skates arrived. And it was too small for my right foot. My big toe felt like it was getting pushed into the socket. Thankfully, I was able to send the skates back for a refund. I bought a size EU 44. Those fit. So if you are going to order online, make sure you know their return policy. You want to do business with a place, that will allow you to return it. Just in case you need to. Like I did.

Hello Ricardo. I got a pair of inline skates for a birthday present from my wife. I had skated with roller skates earlier in my life. I had skated with hockey ice skates. My wife got me some roller blade figure skates with a rubber tip on the end. The person that sold them to us had her own shop and she measured them; they seemed too tight and she stretched them a few times, but they still seemed like a tight fit. Also, after skating on them a couple of times, it seemed like the skates were not the type that I would have wanted. I think that I would have rather had an extra wheel, instead of a toe stop. I have never had a desire to perform figure skating moves. What would you suggest.

hey, i got the USD Aeon 80s and it feels pretty tight around my foot and most of it is fine. there's not a lot of room in my liner, but extra room in the boot so i figured it would stretch. HOWEVER, im getting some intense pain in the balls of my feet and even across that whole front-bottom of my feet area and i don't know if that's normal or if it means my boot is too small. there's some pressure points on the side of my boot where the laces are so maybe its just tied too tight? but don't they need to be tight for support? lmao i feel lost and i already returned them for a bigger size once because i measured wrong the first time. this /should/ be right but idk, maybe i need the next one up again?

Hi - Sorry in advance - I'm honestly not trying to be personal and super critical - I know you are passionate about skating and trying to help people shop, so I wanted to share this feedback because I'm an intermediate rollerblader looking to upgrade from my really old blades and honestly, not much of this video has been helpful for me to understand the inline skate market today. I feel like this video should be titled "5 Important factors when buying your FIRST pair of inline skates" ... but even so, the tips are very vague... So going through each category you mentioned... Size, of course - anything that fits on your feet should obviously have specific sizing and the right fit is super important. Anyone with feet that can walk would know this... structure/support, good tip for beginners and pretty simple concept, hard = better support for newbies, and soft may be more comfortable but you should have strong ankles and know how to support yourself properly... so less time spent talking about it would be better.... Specs, too vague - what specs? - you mentioned ball bearings but ABEC-9 ABEC-30... what is the difference between these? what other specs are there to consider? are the materials used for wheels important? the material used for lining or the boot? laces? You spent a lot of time talking about structure of the boot when there's really only two options overall. But there's likely many specs to consider and you didn't really mention or explain any of them other than ball bearings for a brief moment - like, what should I know when reviewing ball bearings options? what other specs will there be to consider? ... upgradability, yes good tip, helpful to know that some will be modular or not... then price - obviously... price is basically the most important decision on the purchase after considering all else... but what even is a good price for a basic skate or a kids skate or a professional/speed skate? if it has the best of everything for a speed skater, what price range should I expect in your opinion? what are some examples? ... anyone shopping for anything will be looking comparing the price of the thing they are purchasing unless they have plenty of money to burn and don't care about the cost, so this really isn't a tip - to be frank - I feel like this list of "tips" could have been written by AI - as if the AI just took the things listed as features on a skate website and then turned them into chapters in a video and vaguely described what those qualities are ... like, if I asked someone who didn't know anything about skating to write a script for a top 5 tips video on buying skates, and gave them the internet to shop around for one hour, they could've come up with this same video/script. It doesn't really have any information specific to having a background in skating, it's just listing the things that a website would tell you is special about their skates or what differentiates their models. You said many times "it all depends on what type of skating you want to do" but you never mentioned what types of skating there are. I'd think the FIRST tip here should be, figure out what kind of skating you want to do and what surfaces you will be skating on. That to me is #1 above all else and it wasn't even mentioned. Every other factor relies on that, but you just kept saying "depending on what you want to do with them"... Again, I hope this doesn't sound like an attack on your expertise. You had said, "I hope this is helpful" and I wanted to tell you how it could be MORE helpful from my perspective as someone who used to skate a lot when younger and is trying to replace a really old pair of skates.

Hi Ricardo, my son (5 years 3 months old) who is been skating for 4months now. Can you help with speed Inline skates that we should opt for. His coach is suggesting to pick up DASH speed skates, which would cost me around ₹45,000 (Indian rupee) around 545USD. [I AM FROM INDIA (BANGALORE)] Can you suggest any other brand that we get to choose with lesser budget. Reason being am not sure if my son continues to do skating or he may show interest in some other sport. I definitely want to pick up a new speed skates but for now a lesser budget one around 175USD.

I like both. Unlike the trinity system but if you’re planing to change frames can be a bit more limiting, but performance wise they’re awesome. Rollerblade is usually good but ideally if you close to a shop try them and go with what FITS better. That is key specially for your goal

Hi Ricardo and good people! ✌️ I am very interested in trying inline skating, WOOHOO right?!? 🙌 My vision and intention is to cruise around with them on the streets and roads. And I really hope to be able to master a wonderful skating flow one day. I can't wait to get that feeling and really be alive! Anyways, I prefer proper quality, so I have no problem of spending a fair amount for a good setup. Despite the fact that I would be a rookie of skating.. but I really take this interest very seriously and therefore want to ride with the best comfort and performance! So based of what I explained above, what is the ideal skate for me then? I have figured out so far that I need a pair of freeride skates or even fitness skates? I've thought between the 𝙋𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙡𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙉𝙚𝙭𝙩 90 and the 𝙋𝙤𝙬𝙚𝙧𝙨𝙡𝙞𝙙𝙚 𝙎𝙬𝙚𝙡𝙡 as they are both built with trinity mounting system, and can therefore be upgraded as you said, among other positive things. The Swells doesn't however have that hardboot as you were saying is preferred for beginners, for stability right? So perhaps they're better until I have learned a basic technique? Is any of these a great choice do you think? If so which one is the best? Is there anybody that has some experience with this skate and if so are there actually any major cons/disadvantages to them or are they as good as I've read? I would really appreciate the effort for anyone who really wants to help me choose a excellent first skate! 😁

If you don't like to go for big wheels you can of course go for 84. It will make your ride smoother and faster and at the same time ad more stability. Your trade in will only be a bit acceleration and turnability. The bigger the more trade.

Okay, so am really anxious to buy a new pair of skates. I made the decision, I have the money. My current skates are K2 4x90 soft boot maybe 5 years old. They were a nice upgrade from 80mm at the time. But I remain confused as to the different skating style categories - cross-training, urban, freestyle, freeriding, aggressive, fitness, recreation, and racing, and slalom. Based on the words themselves, I would say that my skating style and skating needs are basically related to fitness and recreation. However, I want to improve my skating by skating more and studying. I want to learn to skate backwards. I can do crossover turns okay, but that's about it as far as manouvers. And I want more support in the boot than you get with under-US$200 skates. Anyhow I don't even know what urban, freestyle, and freeriding are. And I want big wheels because I skate mainly on streets and bigger wheels are better for bumps and holes. So I was gravitating to Powerslide Swell, but then I thought wait, who said I need a soft boot? and now I'm thinking Powerslide Next 125 might be the skate I've been longing for.

Joe the Sack, I just got back into skating inlines. After many years of not. A lot of this is new to me again, too. I ended up getting into watching this one YT skater. He has videos skating in the city. I really enjoy watching that, and wanted to skate like that too. So I got the type of skates he uses, to be able to do that. If you check out YT videos, there's probably someone that skates in a style that you want to emulate "fitness and recreation". I'd also try visiting a local skate shop to help you with your questions. If you are on Facebook, then there a several inline skating groups. Those might be able to answer your questions too. Here is one such group facebook.com/groups/rollerblading
