Buying Beer - SNL

Ойын-сауық

A group of underage guys (Shia LaBeouf, Andy Samberg, Bill Hader, Will Forte) try to convince a shop clerk (Kenan Thompson) that they're over 21 in order to buy a couple cases of beer, but the clerk insists on seeing I.D. before making the sale. [Season 32, 2007]

If anyone is wondering why this seems better than most SNL sketches...its because it actually has a plot. Most SNL sketches take a "funny" idea and then repeat it 5 or 6 times...then the next sketch. This one actually built on itself and was more than just a single sentence worth of humor. Good job on this one :)

How does that make any sense?! Looks like some fucked up priorities... How can you trust someone to walk arround with a gun that you don't trust to have a glass of wine? It's crazy! States can choose the drinking age, but to get federal funding to build roads they must choose 21. Since the United States almost exclusively relies on cars to get around, it makes sense that teenagers shouldn't have easy access to booze...hence the age restriction. In Europe, cities are dense and there is nowhere NEAR the reliance on cars when you can walk everywhere or use the tram, subway, buses, public transit to travel a few miles. Most Americans commute a further distance in one day than a European will travel in one week. The U.S. is huge and expansive. My commute is 70 miles everyday and I never leave the city (Houston, TX). 70 miles in the Netherlands can get you deep into Germany...easily. In other words, being 16 and drunk on the subway to travel 3 kilometers home is not deadly. Being 16, drunk, and behind the wheel of a car is. Hence the 21 age restriction in the U.S. There is a reason, it's not just to be prude. It's to try and keep children from killing themselves and others behind the wheel. This is not an issue in countries that do not so heavily rely on cars, so their drinking age can be safely lower.

Well. But people are more responsible here too with alcohol. You argument is kinda invalid. If you travel less you can drink more? You shouldn’t be drunk for 2 km trip as well as 200 km.

Geek Therapy Radio that's a very valid argument for the justification of the drinking age in the US (although Canada's is less extreme at 19 years). However, as this skit indicated, a high drinking age doesn't prevent underage adults from drinking, although it does make it more difficult for them to acquire alcohol. Many adults from 18-20 go to colleges where drinking culture thrives and their older peers supply booze for them, or they have to work jobs where they are required to serve alcohol. Because of the laws, young adults and teens who drink have to hid it from their parents and from the public lest they or their guardians face legal ramifications. This forces them into situations where they may choose to drive under the influence or not seek assistance when under the influence to avoid punishment. In countries like Germany where drinking is still ingrained in the culture but isn't as exclusive, parents can supervise their children when they start to drink without facing legal recourse. This allows young adults to learn their boundaries in a safe environment where they can seek guidance from adults as opposed to avoiding it. The reasoning behind US drinking laws makes sense, but it still doesn't prevent rural teens who are going to drink regardless from driving home drunk on long country roads or residential neighborhoods.

Yeah, and SNL got points from the FCC for this one because it can be used as a "Public Service Announcement" against under age drinking, HA ! ! !

Geek Therapy Radio Good point, hadn’t thought about it that way. I understand the need for a higher drinking age in the US, but I think it should be 18 like it used to before the nonsense blackmailing laws the government enacted. If you can be drafted into the military, buy a gun, vote for president, or smoke cigarettes, there’s absolutely no reason you shouldn’t be able to drink beer.

You don't have to be 21 to sell alcohol. Edit: how do people not know this? Assuming everyone here is an uneducated minor...
