Snotball Rally. Only cars with a maximum value of £6k can enter, and they have to be worth less than 10% of the original list price. Dress code is what you think the original owner was wearing when they collected the car. Race between faded glory country piles and golf courses that are past their best.

Electrics, suspension and roof linings are worth looking at. Engines are pretty strong. 4.6hse is the only one worth having. Check for bottom end cracks and make sure everything works. P38 is worth putting the air suspension over ride kit on in case it fails and goes into limp home mode. Buy a well looked after one and there great.

You're doing well if you can pick up a P38 for a grand that isn't a pile of rusty parts. Getting a one owner, 50k miler with full service history for that is incredibly lucky, even if it is the less desirable 4.6. The P38 actually handles pretty well for such a big, heavy, tall beast. A lot of police forces ran them as motorway cars, mostly 4.0 manuals though some did have 4.6s too, and they were very popular as armoured vehicles with an awful lot of agencies, and you're likely to need to be able to chuck something like that around pretty well. The handling is very tyre-dependant though, good tyres and they'll hang on very well, bad tyres and they just feel awful. Needless to say, the good tyres aren't cheap but they're worth the investment...

I had the exact same one in green. Only bought it to re sell. 1 owner from new still had reciet of of purchase. Previous owner passed away. His grandson suspected head gasket failure but it turned out the heater core and radiator was blocked with rust from using tap water all the time. I only paid i think £450 for it. Got new battery and exhaust back box and sold it for a small profit. Didnt make much and was very difficult to sell even though it was in brilliant condition.

The Gen 2 Range Rover (P38) is one of the best buys out there, but they are not cheap to run really. Well they are compared to new supercar stuff. Depends on your budget I guess. You can still pretty much get most parts still new. All used and even the electrics are pretty plug and play. There is a firm that will overhaul the Becm for you which is the main brain. They are epic off road and comfy on the motorway. He may have paid £1,500.00 for that but that is not a £1,500 car! One owner and that low mileage and full service history, that is worth way more! They are going up in value, I can send you a listing with a london dealer for a late one to show you where prices are going on these. Nice wheels. That 'cow' in the dash is probably the pump system for the brakes as it boosts pressure every four or so presses of the brake pedal. If not it might be the air compressor for the air suspension but you would only here that if the rubber feet are wearing out. It was the classic ones (previous) generation that were the ones that kept tipping over. They have a bad unfair rep. The bad ones are usually due to neglectful owners who have not looked after them. You want to tell your buddy to make sure that that fuel smell is not coming from the fuel hoses at the bulkhead behind the engine. If that is where the smell is coming from , kind of needs to be done before it is driven another mile to be honest. From memory it is one of the only automatic gear boxes that you can use as a manual. In low ratio with the sport button pressed. If you select 2 for example, it goes straight into 2 not 1 then 2 like most autos.
