    With the AMP connectors, can some more standard crimpers be used? I have recently purchased a lot of different crimp tools but not one specifically for AMP pins. Doing research online, it seems the crimp tools for the AMP pins are quite limited (only made be TE Connectivity)? I really don't want to spend $250 plus USD for a crimp tool used for a couple PDM plugs and a couple ECU plugs, and nothing else.

    Absent from your commentary was automatic transmission control. Combining transmission control, throttle control and torque management can make an otherwise unusable package work, and work great. I find it strange that in this day and age of autos being technically superior and far more common than manuals I still can't get an aftermarket ecu that lets me a: drive at all b: have torque reduction on shifts and c: rev matches on downshifts.

    That's because automatic transmission control is also absent from the MoTeC GPA firmware. I am not going to lie, I have a little snob in my that wants that Motec sticker on my car, but I have a lot of cheap bastard as well that would not mind saving the cash. You are correct, the Motec is noticeably more expensive here in the USA, but it is also not ridiculous, about 50% more. What some people don’t realize is that Haltech and motec in Australia the price is almost the same. In the USA motec is literally 60% higher. I don’t know the reason behind it because it’s not an issue with haltech/link. I’m assuming that motec is just greedy over here in the states.

    Usually, it is the other way around and we in Aus and NZ etc pay substantially more than you in the USA 😅 I don't know the pricing structure but I do know MoTeC Global and MoTeC USA are two different companies beyond just being a US branch. That said, they are now owned by Bosch and I don't know if they plan to change or have changed anything around that. Either way, the price is the price and if a Link or Haltech option ticks all the boxes you need for you (and your tuner) then you are not wrong to use either option instead, they both have some great ECUs too. If they don't tick the right boxes but a MoTeC does, then even if it does cost more note they do also produce excellent ECUs and software and I highly doubt you will regret the purchase once the bank account lets you forget about it 😂 - Taz.

    First of all nowhere did we say that GPA and GPR are 'basically the same' - We quite clearly defined what you don't get in GPA and in our experience speccing and calibrating ECUs for customers, we would say that GPA is sufficient for more than 80% of customers. As we mentioned in the video, it's all well and good having a feature on a spec sheet but that doesn't count for much in our experience - It's how well that feature actually works in the real world. There's traction control and then there's traction control. This goes for every other feature that every ECU manufacturer lists on their spec sheets.

  • @SomervilleMetalWorks

    @@hpa101 Hardware wise are they not the same? the only different is firmware coding?? We use a haltech in a drag car we need 2 step and launch and if we had more power maybe the traction control. Sure motec is a better system and it might do these things better but haltech gets the job done. $600 to add code they have already written is just silly. i mean if it was included in the gpa model your at $3250 and then not much more than a haltech and you would sell more units. I mean $400 more for a motec its a no brainer, it's not costing motec more for the extra code.

  • @hpa101

    @hpa101

    5 жыл бұрын

    @@SomervilleMetalWorks yes the hardware is the same, however the additional firmware features require more time to develop, code, and validate hence the ECUs are differentiated by price. To better illustrate this, let's consider one of MoTeC's more complex packages such as the R35 GTR. This still runs on the same M150 that the GPA package runs on yet is considerably more complex as the factory CAN bus required decoding so that the stock GR6 transmission still functions, as well as all of the other R35 specific components. It's a safe bet that a lot more development time went into this package and the price reflects this. Like it or not, this is the model that MoTeC have chosen to apply to their business and of course you have no obligation to use their product.

The pricing changes depending where you are in the world hence to get a relevant price you need to contact a local dealer. Looking at prices in the US or Australia will be misleading for example if you happen to be based in Europe or Asia. There is a dealer list available at motec.com.au.

    Wait so you have to pay then for software package upgrades?? Even after you spend 2 to 3k on their ecu, you wont have flat foot shifting or launch control unless you pay their software upgrade fee? What a rip off! Nobody else does this. Go haltech or maxxecu or ecumaster. Forget motec.

    If you want launch control or other motorsport features you would not buy a GPA firmware package, you'd buy the GPR which also includes closed loop gear change control and traction control. As we said in the video, a feature on a manufacturer's spec list doesn't mean much in the real world - It's how that feature actually works on the race track. MoTeC's advanced race features are developed for professional level motorsport through their involvement with the likes of nismo and they work.

    The best part is companies that allow that without the price tag are considered "trash" despite doing exactly those things. Even better when tuners refuse to use those other ECUs; often because the owner can then go in and see how garbage their tune is or "sell it" despite it already being paid for. Paying to play is one thing. Being extorted is another. It's also a bit sad given how unnecessary it is. sAFC putting cars in the single digits. Burnable ROMs doing the same. Best power & reliability not being at/near knock. The longer I've been in the tuning scene the more it becomes obvious it's all about taking money from people who don't know any better and not spreading knowledge.

    Maybe give the video another watch Ashter. The point we are trying to make is that MoTeC isn't as expensive as many people believe, it's not the cheapest but isn't unobtainable like many believe. The pricing locally puts this ECU below Haltech's top range. Yes, there are differences in i/o, and features, but for some people who really like MoTeC and don't need advanced features - this will be ideal. :) We aren't trying to tell people to buy this, we don't get paid by MoTeC, we don't make money when people purchase ECUs, we work with all companies like Adaptronic, Haltech and AEM. Hope that clears things up. - Ben `
