Buying a Small Fishing Boat? : Is it a Dream? : Let's Talk Money : Orkney Coastliner 14 : Part 2

Ойын-сауық

How much does it really cost to fulfil the dream of owning your own small fishing boat? In the second of my Orkney Coastliner videos I run through my thoughts and ideas about small boat purchasing and share what little Reel Time has cost to buy and get on the water.
If you're thinking about getting a boat, do watch this video and it might help with your decision making whether you're looking for an Orkney or any other make of small fishing boat.
I hope you find the video useful, do let me know in the comments below.

Thank you. Like all hobbies and interests you have to consider what you're happy (able) to afford. I hope this little video helps folks when considering what to buy. The Coastliner isn't for everyone but as you'll see from the rest of the channel it is a very capable boat and I'm very happy with mine. I'm not thinking about upgrading anytime soon.

No such thing as a cheap boat, i've had my boat for 21 years but the money i've spent is repayed in enjoyment, I love my boat. It is nothing like a car, it drinks 2 and 1/2 MPG but we only go out to sea 4 or 5 miles and fish (stationary) once a fortnight so a different king of affordable. Great video's.

Thanks for watching and commenting on the videos. In the past I had a 22 footer which I kept on a pontoon berth in a marina. That was boating on a much bigger budget. For now the little trailerable Orkney works for me. Like you say, whatever you have you're rewarded in enjoyment. Thanks again.

Thanks, I describe my trailer as a 'trigger's brush'. Most of the parts have been replaced. The journey has been fun and satisfying in equal measures. I'm really pleased with the outcome. Good to hear the Grandkids are the anglers of the future, mackerel are a great way to get them engaged in the sport. Phil.

Good advice there Phil. Been there and done that many moons ago. Don't have my longliner 16 anymore, but remember well that buying a second hand boat will always be a development project, and the outgoings on maintenance and mooring/launching will continue even after you get it as you want it. Boats ain't cheap, and if they are they can be money pits.

A super video old chap, I have a rule when buying a boat, buy one without an engine so you can put a new one in, or buy a boat with a new engine, this is mainly for boats with outboards. Your scenario is something I've seen so many times. 😀👍👍👍

I decided on the Tohatsu as it was the lightest 20 hp 4 stroke. I didn't bother with power tilt which saved a little on the weight (and cost). I shouldn't think you'd have an problem with a Mercury.

Hi Oldbones. Thanks for your comments. Our area is not best for launch and recovery so a little boat on a trailer opens up options for the West Coast and beyond. My books - I do love a good read especially if it's about fishing. I get most books secondhand if possible. Hard to recommend / review as everyone has different tastes. In my view if you want a good read try to get a copy of 'Beneath the Black Water' by Jon Berry. That guy was obsessed with catching Ferox Trout. Phil.

In some ways your right and other ways your not. Im a late in life purchaser's of a boat, my first was on eBay it was up at a the Calder reservoir just north oof Hadrians Wall. I live between York and Lancashire . Used to travel up to it from York. Five hours each way for a day up there was only just doable. I bought it blind unseen in person i new the boat would float due to the fact there was around 400 gallons of water in the boat and it wasn't leaking out. The first trip was draining water out and then removing everything from the boat and covering it with two tarpaulins that came with it , in such away it could dry out. After a few trips we as a couple enjoyed the time together, and Calder is a lovely area, we joined the sailing club and had the use of all the facilities on offer. The boat cost around £300. I think money well spent to find out what and which direction we need to be going in. A gave the boat away to the club and the money they made on selling the boat would go to things for the club. I then Purchased A Parker 21on its own trailer a few miner knocks , the boat yard at Selby had been paid up for the year, so we kept it there untill we found some were to moor it. Were lucky we have a permanent mooring in Whitby. I did buy it to sailbut to be honest i think i had left it to late in life to go sailing again, but saying that we now have our Two bed acomidation in the center of Whitby that cost us les than to hire a caravan or a flat for a week 365 days a year. I feel buying the bargain is a positive way forward because it shows you what you do and don't want out of a boat with out spending to much to find out, I have a mooring in York were i keep my trailer for the Parker, it cost me £600 a year and now im looking for a small boat i can row i think the Orkney 14 is probably going to be perfect for me. Trial an error helps you to learn a lot about what you dream and reality are or what your capable of doing. Nic

Hi Nic, most interesting to hear your experiences of boat ownership and thanks for sharing them here on the channel. You make very good points particularly about a boat providing 'accommodation' in interesting areas of the country. That accommodation can also easily be moved around from harbour to harbour - unlike bricks a mortar. The Coastliner comes with rowlocks fitted and the cuddy can be removed. My cuddy is fixed with screws but I've seen some fitted with quick release latches. Another Orkney model that could be worth a look would be the Spinner 13 foot. They weigh 114 kg as opposed to the 225kg which mine weighs with the cuddy. Just a thought. Phil.

Ordered a new one and problem solved. Guys in parts shop said the coil serial number was original part.
