Buying a Sailboat - Survey, Haul-Out & Sea Trial

Our offer has been accepted on a Leopard 43 Catamaran and the next step in the process is a Survey, Haul-Out and Sea Trial. We've hired a guy named Brian Stetler out of Jupiter, Florida for the survey and it's his job to find the big stuff that might be wrong with this sailboat.
Turns out Brian is extremely thorough and the day is action packed with issues, at sea repairs and plenty of learning opportunities along the way.

Never gave sailing any thought until you guys talked about it so I started watching sailing KZreads and I'm so hooked. It is so much better than RVing! I like the destinations better. I've never liked the idea of RVing, because the US is so much the same in my opinion - same chain stores everywhere so looks the same in so many places. Not challenging to travel about either so RVing just seems boring to me. Sailing offers what I really like - a big challenge and getting out of the USA. Never sailed before in my life, however. We are going on a cruise later this year and I feel a bit embarrassed now to be part of that crowd after watching these sailing KZreads. Got to go - my wife has never been and wants the experience for us.

In theory you are supposed to register the boat in the state where it is going to be used the most. I recommend using it the most in Delaware because they won't charge you a tax on the sale price of the boat. hint hint

As always a good videos, when having samples on the oil done they always check for soot levels which tells you when the oil needs changing, high levels of soot causes more wear in a diesels . You two make a great pair, good luck.

Hi Nikki and Jason, after what the surveyor has showed us about the Leopard I think it is a great boat! And think about the fact that the dinghy (tender) including the outbord is a great addition and worth 10-15k as well. I whope for you that the ownder is cooperative but he attended the whole time, he saw the inventory / survey results and therefore there are no surprises for him. He will sell the boat for 290k. Thanks again for the great images. Especially Jason always looks so excited and amazed that your footage means a great motivation and inspiration to me. It is highly appreciated! Kay

Great video! Your presentation is wonderful, entertaining, and informative. Although you are novices at boat buying and sailing, your attitude clearly shows a methodology towards success. As a sailor for fifty years, I am especially impressed with your hands on approach. A key to pleasurable boating is knowing the boat, expanding you skills, and knowing your own limitations. I've owned mono-hulls for many years and currently own a Beneteau 42s7, but catamarans are a design I know little about. While going to college I worked for a successful sailboat dealer who sold both mono and multi-hulls boats. The catamarans were under 20'; back in those days the only large cats were built by backyard builders. I'm enjoying your story and am looking forward to future videos. Thank you.

Jason, you are a lucky dude! Not only is Niki cute, she drives the MH and the boat, she's all down in the bilge with a socket working on the engines, she's got her nose in all the nooks and crannies with the surveyor, and has scraped up elbows from getting down and dirty in there! Two thumbs up for the girl who does it all!

Don't know if you did this or not, but ALWAYS close all of the seacock valves before the boat is lifted out of the water. This will prevent all of the water in the lines from draining back out the bottom. When the boat goes back in and you restart everything, the pumps will all still have water in them and will have an easier time repriming. Anytime I start engines, I immediately go look for proper flow of cooling water out the exhaust (assuming your exhaust is above water). Those 4 cylinder Yanmars can run a surprisingly long time without water flow at slow speeds before they start to overheat. If your air cond. pump ever loses prime while you're tied up at the dock, try using the dockside water hose to spray water in to the thru hull fitting where the water is normally discharged ...... sometimes you can get the pump reprimed by doing this and its super easy ! Boat mechanic for 25 + years ;) Also on a 2 year count down to becoming a full time RVer !

If you are going to do some training (which I recommend), check which ones the insurance company prefer, as it can make quite a difference to the insurance costs. Very important to reprime the cooling system after a lift out. All the water will have drained from the pickup side. If you run the engine without repriming there is a risk of burning out the impellor. Always carry plenty of spares. Also you may have a stern gland on the prop shaft that needs squeezing to release air. Survey and lift out sounds like a reasonable percentage of your purchase cost
