My e46 has only 85k miles and i can tell you from experience don’t think just cuz it’s low mileage that it’s ok for you to treat it like it’s a brand new car. As long as you know what your doing and keep up with every single service interval the car will treat you well. This man knows what he’s doing and anyone with an e46 would be stupid not to watch him and educate yourself

Excellent video mate! I had a similar experience when I bought my first E46 4 years ago. Having wrenched an E36 for 3 years I knew the stuff that I had to do right away. All these were done within the first 6 months. I did all the work by myself so it was not costly. Also fixing this car was not hard and was quite enjoyable experience. 1. Replace oil pump with later model (mine broke shaft inside) 2. Valve cover gasket - leaked badly and smoked 3. Vanos o-rings and bearings - had a bad rattle at certain RPM 4. Oil pan gasket - was leaking onto the plastic cover 5. Front control arms, poly bushings - got funky loose feeling on the steering on some situations 6. Sway bar poly bushings - front only - heard some clunks on bad roads 7. Struts upgrade with bilstein - front and back - one in the front started leaking 8. Genune BMW short shift kit and bushings replacement On top of that I got 4 BMW staggered wheels for relatively cheap. Going through second set of Michelin PS 4. I put close to 85000 km within 3 years and now sitting at 280000+ km on the odo. Did couple of long distance drives through rough Australian outback, yet it never let me down. Getting average 9l / 100km fuel economy on 2.5l inline 6. When I do long distances it gets better and comes around 7.8l / 100km. The car is 20 years old yet is quite an enjoyable car to drive.

Wise words there Michael, couldn't agree more!!!! The biggest thing is that no matter what brand of car, a 20 year old car is going to need maintenance and the trouble with BMW's and the like is that they cost a premium to maintain if you don't do it yourself and most people are going to skip out on paying a premium for maintaining and older car.

Pretty ironic that this video came out just the other day when I came from work my water pump was leaking I noticed because it was coming from the center of the car. I have the parts coming within a couple days the water pump should be easy but I have to replace the rest of the cooling system I already did the vacuum lines fuel filter vano seals valve cover spark plug and ignition coil. It's weird because my car was leaking when I turned the car off and not when it was running but it start leaking when I turn the car on the second time this car is extremely easy to work on and it is a good platform I have recommended to anybody and that's coming from a JDM guy

Another good video Micheal ! The scale of quality with e46 these days is crazy, some are utterly rotten and some are mint. you win some you lose some. I guess I was just lucky. I looked over my car for 7 minutes and my test drive was telling the owner to kick the day lights out of it for a bit (I wouldn't be buying any insurance until I bought it so he had to drive). my theory was if it breaks then at least I haven't bought it and if it doesn't break under the sort of load he was putting on it then the car would be relatively solid. once I was happy with how the car held up to the owners driving and I was happy with my SEVEN MINUTE inspection I got on the DVLA website and signed the car over to myself because the website shuts at 7pm. car was signed over into my name online with 2 minutes to spare. Completely forgot to even give the owner his money or bother to haggle him down until he jokingly asked if I planned on paying him lol. I just let the owner go in my bag and grab the envelope of cash. at that point I didn't care about the money, the car was a steal. Price was the UK equivalent of about $3300aus which was about half what the car was worth in its current condition. 3 years 31,000km later and all the car has cost me is a droplink (broke when I removed it to fit coilovers) and a set of front brake pipes which were advisories on the mot that was on the car before I bought it so I already knew they needed done. Other than the front wings getting a bit rotten (replacements are in my unit waiting for me to fit them), the car has never mechanically failed. going in to buy an e46 I was terrified of the subframe failing and the coolant system failing and the dreaded vanos problems but I have been very very lucky. Keep up the awesome videos Micheal, you've inspired me to save up for the vf engineering kit so once ive finished building my b30 engine I can boost it.

The person who owned mine before myself had ran it on a budget and it cost me many thousands over the last few years to put right and maintain but it is perfect now and I don’t ever see myself selling it. 2003 325ci sport, Sapphire black and standard apart from Bilstein B12 Sport suspension to replace the tired Sachs dampers and springs and an AFE cold air intake which makes it sound like a mini CSL 😀. I think the 2 coolant hard lines under the intake manifold are the hardest to check when buying an E46. I bought an old 320Ci and had to rip all of that out and replace within 6 months. The location of the leak makes things looks like it's coming from the expansion tank O-ring, but it's actually coolant seeping from the hardline to engine block connection.

What about the CCV and associated hoses. The plastic hoses and fittings that make up the CCV system are really brittle and prone to cracking and failure and are pretty much impossible to visually check. Also the dipstick o-ring is sometimes overlooked as a possible vac leak.

Thanks Peter, generally I agree with you and I would normally suggest changing components to avoid using new and old parts together. However when I did the clutch firstly, I was planning to change to a single mass flywheel but was not in a financial position to do this when the clutch 'let go'. Also the mechanic who did the work has decades of BMW experience so I was guided by his recommendation based on my future plan for the clutch/flywheel.
