    Fantastic and interesting video, thank you……. I have been using Wallaby and had concerns…..(2 orders 75 1 gallon bags and 2 orders of O2 absorbers) I would estimate that only half of all the Mylar bags “sucked in” and tighten up. I was told that not all storage bags will tighten up…… I’m a bit skeptical and concerned after watching your video. In addition, the packages of O2 absorbers did NOT have the freshness indicators. Lastly, my first Wallaby order sent from CA and last order and a 2 month delay…..sent from Colorado……both orders from Wallaby’s website….. I did order another brand of Mylar bags off of Amazon for comparison…….zero issues and much larger O2 absorbers….

I originally ordered Freshpack USA and felt like their oxygen absorbers were much higher quality than Wallaby but unfortunately the packages kept selling out I might order just the freshpack absorbers for the wallaby bags I already have. Nice video! I like your scientific approach. I just have a few observations on your method for testing the oxygen absorbers. Since oxygen can diffuse through liquids, it's possible that the absorbers pulled more oxygen through the liquid than was in the jars initially. Also, it's possible that the weight of the liquid decreased the pressure inside the jar to lower than ambient pressure which would skew your measurements lower as well. There are two ways I can think of to control these variables. One way is to weigh the absorbers immediately after removing them from the package and again after a week. If you don't have a scale that can weigh things that light, you can increase the number of absorbers you weigh at a time. The second method I can think of is to slightly pressurize a container with an absorber and do some gas calculations with the difference in pressure. These suggestions are just off the top of my head, though, so I'm not sure how they would work in practice.

  • @Philat4800feet

    Good questions. Oxygen doesn't want to separate itself from water unless there is sufficient energy to do so. Standing water will just stand. On many experiments I used a jar, in water, without an absorber to act as a control. I wanted to see if temperature and barometric pressure would influence the outcome. It didn't. I also didn't want gravity to act upon the water being pulled up from the vacuum. I'm still trying to find a better way to test. I have noticed the oxygen absorbers will gain weight, but the difference is very small. One liter of oxygen, under standard conditions, is 1.43 grams. 300 cc would weigh 0.43 grams.

    Hi. I have used pack fresh exclusively for a while now. Some months ago they changed brand of oxygen absorbers from FreshUs to an o2 absorber with the packfressusa name on it. I did some testing and found that using packfreshusa o2 absorbers causes some freeze dry product like apples to turn soft and mushy especialy around the o2 absorber in a mylar or Mason jar. They seem to be adding moisture to the product. Have you noticed this?

    I havent felt comfortable with the idea of o2 absorbers not sucking packaging tightly, so after sealing up my food with an o2 absorber, I take a thumb tack and poke a hole near the edge then use my house vacuum to suck the packaging tight and use my flat iron to seal the hole. Works like a charm!

    Do you have a freeze dryer? You can vacuum seal inside the chamber. Fun fact- Oxygen absorber can create a small vacuum, but not always enough to suck in the sides of a bag. As the absorber removes oxygen it creates carbon monoxide. Not enough to be harmful to humans, but could keep bugs away.

    Thank you so much! I thought I was buying the best. I watched several review videos before I bought. I am searching for an impulse sealer and looked up Wallaby. So happy to have found your review with actual testing. I have only purchased Wallaby and have marked OA on containers I sealed using them. It will be fairly easy to snip a corner add some absorbers with enough power to do the job, then reseal. Have you tested the impulse sealers. I have been looking at reviews stating that the temperature knob was flimsy and even came off, temperatures were not stable and some units got hotter and hotter. Safety is my priority. I was comparing features and looking for temperature control by the degree (not 1-5, 5 is hottest). Also, looking at cord length, does it have a stand, width of seal 10 or 15 mm, unit width (8, 12, or 16 inches of heating element), material (stainless steal over plastic). Everyone would be very thankful if you would do a scientific testing and review on the impulse sealer available online. I am looking at the squeeze and release style rather than the one that looks like a giant stapler. Others reviewed those and said that they did not last very long. Maybe 50 seals. I will happily follow your advice. Also, which OA brand did you go with? Keep up the great content. You have a new subscriber.

    @Phil at 4800 feet should O2 absorbers be used when using a vaccum chamber sealer with mylar bags or are they not needed? Also, once I had run out of OAs so just folded the bag top over. I later forgot about that batch when OAs came. How long would that food be ok without the O2 absorber? An OA is like insurance. You may not need it until you do. I still use OA when I vacuum seal. It's a low price to pay. I have a freeze-dried pantry. None of the bags have OAs in them. Depending on humidity, it's low where I live, my food will last up to a year. When it starts to absorb moisture, I just run it through a quick FD cycle

    Great videos. One thing I didn't notice in any of your reviews is whether or not you actively replace the air in the jar when you dump the water out during your tests? For example, if you dump the water out, then put the jar right back in the water, you will still have a very low oxygen content in the air so the second round with the same absorber will always fail. Are you blowing fresh air into the jars after emptying the water on the first round? Thanks!

  • @Philat4800feet

    Exchanging the air in the jar was done "off-camera" and edited out. I also tamped down the absorber to keep it from falling into the liquid. It has happened before.

    Thank you so much for your tests. Although I do not understand any of the testing methods. I am always so nervous about using oxygen absorbers because I never know if it works. when I pull out the oxygen absorbers they are soft and grainy ,however within seconds of opening the package, the little pink dot starts turning purple and within 30 seconds it's completely purple. I always move fast to get them in bags, fold them over and then immediately start sealing. If the dot turns purple so quickly does that mean the oxygen absorbers are no longer good? Or just degraded and i should just toss in 2 or 3 extra? Thank you for your time and dedication.

    It can take hours, if not days, to use up an absorber. Many "better" companies add extra iron powder to increase the potency sometimes X4. The pink/purple dot is a poor representation of the oxygen absorbers.

    You'll probably get them in a refrigerator box. As for the 2000cc absorbers try it yourself with a child or grandchild. Stick the absorber in the bottom, soon to be top, of the jar. I use gorilla duct tape and rest the jar on three paper clips in colored water. track the progress. When the water level stops, that will be 21% of your oxygen. see how many times you can repeat it. Let me know the outcome. Thanks

    Thank you for your tests and the process. I do have one question that may be an issue. You had a 983cc, call it a 1L, jar. I think you had it filled with air, not with O2. Would not air only leave you with about 200cc of O2 in it? If you filled it with O2 then I understand the measurements.

  • @Philat4800feet

    @Philat4800feet

    2 жыл бұрын

    A normal quart equals 946cc. The one quart jar I used was filled to the top and equaled 983cc. 21% of 983cc equals 206cc, the amount of oxygen in our air. I marked the line on the jar at 200cc to make it clear. The absorber removed the available O2 and raise the water level to the 200cc mark and then stopped because there wasn't any more O2 in the jar. When the air was replaced, it went through the same process until all the iron powder in the absorber was coated with iron oxide. This was repeated five times until the absorber was spent. I would love to be able to use pure oxygen in a large beaker to see what would happen. I fear the water column would be so large gravity would have a negative effect. Good comment. Thank you.

Carefully open a 1" corner of the bag. Get your nose up close and slowly squeeze the air into your nostrils. How does it smell? If there is a sulfur smell (hydrogen sulfide), that's a sign of food spoilage. If it smells like the correct food you're probably ok. See this video: kzread.info/dash/bejne/foqFyamHia-ZgbA.html

    @@47retta Mylar is actually three layers. The outside layer is Mylar, the center is a metal foil and the inner layer is a thermal plastic. The Mylar outer layer reduces oxygen transmission better than any other plastic. The foil stops UV light transmission, and the inner layer allows the material to be fused with heat. All three will help stop oxygen absorption. Real Mylar is a clear polyester. Real Mylar, made by DuPont is outstanding in stopping oxygen. Re. the bags, I don't know that you can say that they came from the exact same factory if they have similar labelling (but not exactly the same) on the bag. More likely the Chinese factory with the cheapie bags is either copying the design, or the same generic designs are open sourced there and used by different companies for different things. Re. the oxygen absorbers, I agree with your previous videos, it's a bit sketchy on labelling. I don't know that I'd trust any oxygen absorbers alone at this point. What you're seeing would explain why some bags with oxygen absorbers don't have that vacuum sealed look, even though they say it can happen (the oxygen absorber didn't work 100%). I think I will vacuum seal and stick an oxygen absorber at the same time in all my mylar bagged preps from now on.

    Bit out of spec here because 400cc is a measure of VOLUME not WEIGHT so cc to gram doesn't really work. And oxygen absorbers are designated for how much SPACE they're supposed to deal with, not how much water they might suck up. That, I suppose, is why they're not called water absorbers.

  • @Philat4800feet

    @Philat4800feet

    Жыл бұрын

    The great thing with the metric system is a cc = ml = gram. A cubic centimeter is the same as one 1 ml and both weighs one gram. 400 cc weighs 400 grams and fills 400 ml. As the oxygen absorber oxidizes 1 cc of oxygen it creates a void. When that happens, 1cc (or one gram) of water is "sucked" in to fill the void.

    Your scale does not have the requisite accuracy for such small amounts. You need to use one that has accuracy down to the hundredths, i.e., 70% Fe will be ~2.80 grams. Using a scale that only measures in no smaller than a gram will not give an accurate reading. Also, how long has the oxygen absorber been exposed to the air _prior_ to placing inside the jar? They _must_ be stored in airtight containers and _immediately_ placed into whatever receptacle it is being used in _within two minutes_ for best results.

    Measuring the amount of iron is important but not critical to me. I do this to find the potential. From the moment the powdered iron is manufactured the clock on exposure starts ticking. The greater the exposure to the atmosphere the more the powdered iron will degrade. Those suppliers that add extra iron hedge their bet against capacity. The secondary ingredients, that control the thermal/chemical reaction are important, and I agree with you, to minimize the exposure to the air, but in almost every test, it takes days for the absorber to reach its potential and in most cases the potential is multiplied by a factor of three. My greatest concern are those manufactures and suppliers who disregard US law on packaging and fail to disclose country of origin and rated contents and capacity. Thank you for your comments.

    I get no compensation from any manufacture or distributor of Mylar bags or oxygen absorbers. I have no issues with the bags from Wallaby, however, they were not able to prove if the bags were really Mylar, a film manufactured by Dupont, or standard polyester film. You are correct, and I mentioned this in the video, that I would have to perform several hundred tests on the millions of absorbers manufacture by BCTC- China. I tested two out of 50 absorbers. Both the tests failed to achieve 500cc. Thes odds are terrible. If you review the other comments, this issue is not isolated. As far as Harvest Right, many of my videos are critical of their design issues. Again, I get no compensation, but I have Beta tested their programs. Wallaby is my fourth review. I have two more reviews to release soon. When I need more supplies, I will buy from a company I haven't purchased from before. My focus on Harvest Right is due to my ownership of their equipment.
