Buttress - Brutus (Official Music Video)

Музыка

I've been watching him for my entire life
I hate the air he breathes, his foolish decrees, his words so contrived
& I hate the way the townspeople gather outside
they hang on every breath, cling to his chest, home to his heart full of pride
the oracle told him to beware the ides
& I'd be lying if I said I wasn't wishing for untimely death or demise
or am I just wishing I could be like you?
that the people would see me too as a poet
and not just the muse
oh it's not true, I don't wish harm upon you
from birth we've been like brothers, of different mothers, within the spirit of the same womb
may the gods strike me down if I forsake you
frater meus
you're beautifully made & to you I'm forever grateful
I'll never forget that you showed me to make art
and I know the love you showed me came from a pure & noble heart
I love you & if you want I'll call you king
but why do I lie awake each night thinking
instead of you, it should be me?
something wicked this way comes
& as I set to face it I'm unsure should I embrace it, should I run?
what motivates me - hatred or is it love?
what's more wrong - that I too wish to be great or my mother wished she'd had a son?
and even if I can't be the one, maybe I could at least help make way for him until the day that he comes
maybe my name could also be known -
that I helped return good to the people
and restored greatness to Rome
Male Chorus:
BRUTUS, BRUTUS, BRUTUS, BRUTUS (x4)
my name is brutus and my name means heavy
so with a heavy heart I'll guide this dagger into the heart of my enemy
my whole life you were a teacher and friend to me
please know my actions are not motivated only by envy
I too have a destiny
this death will be art
the people will speak of this day from near and afar
this event will be history
& I'll be great too
I don't want what you have
I wanna be you
I always knew I could be the one
though I feel the endless pain of being & I am scorched by the sun
of humble origins and born of the cursed sex
my name is Brutus but the people will call me Rex

I think that, to me, it represents how I know that even if I got everything I wanted, I still wouldn't be taken as seriously as a man would have been, I still would have to keep re-proving myself constantly. I don't wish I was a man, but when I see how perceptions of me are altered because of my gender while I see men being viewed exactly how I want to be viewed, it sometimes feels like I do. I'm not sure if this is what was meant, but it hits close to home for me.

There’s something about the background music being airy and almost light sounding while simultaneously sounding like someone slowly snapping. It’s so distant and like the innocence of a nursery rhyme, but disconnect and disjointed similar to the female experience of feminine performance. Maybe I’m looking too deeply into this, but you capture the rage simmering in our guts at all times, and the fake laugh and smile we put on to make men feel comfortable even when they’re causing the discomfort themselves. Beautifully done.

Honestly reading the lyrics and hearing her tone of voice I don't just see this as like "man hate" or a "penis envy"... I see this as like a rivalry and jealousy amongst two individuals that probably had a lot of love and compassion between each other. If you had siblings in your life you would completely understand what I'm referring to.... The need to outdo or to be better than your sibling sometimes you might even try to assassinate their character figuratively. It can be quite devastating at times being the person that's receiving the "hate" but knowing your sibling you realize that they really deeply care about you. There's usually a level concern and protection where if someone else were to try to attack you, that same sibling would stop being a Brutus and would be your best Ally.... The true dichotomy of a love-hate relationship

It comes from deep seated rage, entitlement and frustration. I mean it's obviously more complicated but just to boil it down. And each event's reasons and excuses vary but those feelings are a common denominator. It's absolutely true that no pop culture influences are entirely to blame, people committed different rageful atrocities long before those mediums ever existed. Methods change but anger in humans has been there since the dawn of time, it can be fed and aided but not created out of thin sir by some external influence.

This says everything that i couldnt find the words for. The rage of having been born a woman, in a world built by men, and feeling such intense jealousy and self-hatred that ill never be a man. When main characters in media default to a man, when ill never be a doctor, lawyer, politician, but a "female" doctor, a "female" lawyer, a "female" politician, when gender roles engrained into society teaches girls and boys that women are less capable or logical or rational, when these boys grow up to see/treat women as a different species entirely, when every author i enjoy writes women more two-dimensionally than their male counterparts. Listening to this i finally feel like a human being, not just a "woman". This sort of media really help me accept the fact that i shouldn't have to be a man to feel like a person.

A plumber wises everyday to be a CEO. A CEO wishes everyday to be a plumber. But they both only want the other for a day- no more. For women, the idea making great name, making history, being great leader or in power is attractive and romantic since they were never conditioned or pressured to those things. So These values in them usually come from their own wants and desire. For men, when you are told your entire life that you do those things is your only value- even in this song, the allusion the woman is already putting the pressure on her future son to be that thing- this is why it’s always never simple. Did Caesar want to be a great leader? Did he have a choice in what he did? We sometimes give men too much Agency and women too Little- in Reality the Woman Born in poverty that became a prostitute had equal amount of Agency as did a Man Born in a Nobel House to be a great Military General. The concept of the gender dynamic is simple: would you rather be a man, who will be expected to do great things or a woman who is not expected to do great things. I’ve always thought, while the woman in this song is tearing her heart out in agony about how she wants what he has and be him, the man is quite in his Attitude, perhaps he also feels the same: “I wished I had what you have and I were you, as well.”

I'm just putting the lyrics because every single one of these lines hit so hard I've been watching him for my entire life I hate the air he breathes His foolish decrees, his words so contrived And I hate the way the townspeople gather outside They hang on every breath Cling to his chest, home to his heart full of pride The oracle told him to beware the Ides And I'd be lying if I said I wasn't wishing for untimely death or demise Or am I just wishing I could be like you? That the people would see me, too, as a poet And not just the muse Oh it's not true, I don't wish harm upon you From birth we've been like brothers of different mothers Within the spirit of the same womb May the gods strike me down if I forsake you Frater meus, you're beautifully made And to you I'm forever grateful I'll never forget that you showed me to make art And I know the love you showed me came From a pure and noble heart I love you, and if you want, I'll call you king But why do I lie awake each night thinking Instead of you, it should be me? Something wicked this way comes And as I set to face it, I'm unsure should I embrace it, should I run? What motivates me? Hatred? Is it love? What's more wrong, that I too wish to be great Or my mother wished she'd had a son? And even if I can't be the one Maybe I could at least help make way for him Until the day that he comes Maybe my name could also be known That I helped return good to the people And restored greatness to Rome Butus! Brutus! Brutus! Brutus! Butus! Brutus! Brutus! Brutus! Butus! Brutus! Brutus! Brutus! Butus! Brutus! Brutus! Brutus! My name is Brutus and my name means heavy So with a heavy heart I'll guide this dagger Into the heart of my enemy My whole life you were a teacher and friend to me Please know my actions are not motivated only by envy I too have a destiny This death will be art The people will speak of this day from near and afar This event will be history And I'll be great too I don't want what you have! I wanna be you! I love how this combines elements from Macbeth, Julius Caesar, and also a bit of Greek Tragedy with the Chorus. A splendid re-imagination of the Classics, and the "people would see me as a poet and not just the muse" was so powerful and resounding.

I love the absolute grit you put into certain words, it really conveys the essence of the song, the absolute anger and discontent with staying in your place because of your sex. It's very raw and personal. It's incredibly powerful.

Lyrics: I've been watching him for my entire life. I hate the air he breathes, his foolish decrees, his words so contrived and I hate the way the townspeople gather outside they hang on every breath, cling to his chest, home to his heart full of pride. the oracle told him to beware the ides and I'd be lying if I said I wasn't wishing for untimely death or demise or am I just wishing I could be like you? that the people would see me too as a poet, and not just the muse! oh it's not true, I don't wish harm upon you from birth we've been like brothers, of different mothers, within the spirit of the same womb. may the gods strike me down if I forsake you frater meus. you're beautifully made and to you I'm forever grateful! I'll never forget that you showed me to make art and I know the love you showed me came from a pure & noble heart. I love you and if you want I'll call you king but why do I lie awake each night thinking instead of you, it should be me? something wicked this way comes and as I set to face it I'm unsure should I embrace it, should I run? what motivates me - hatred or is it love? what's more wrong - that I too wish to be great or my mother wished she'd had a son? and even if I can't be the one, maybe I could at least help make way for him until the day that he comes! maybe my name could also be known - that I helped return good to the people and restored greatness to Rome! *BRUTUS! BRUTUS! BRUTUS! BRUTUS* *BRUTUS! BRUTUS! BRUTUS! BRUTUS* *BRUTUS! BRUTUS! BRUTUS! BRUTUS* *BRUTUS! BRUTUS! BRUTUS! BRUTUS* MY NAME IS BRUTUS AND MY NAME MEANS HEAVY! SO WITH A HEAVY HEART I'LL GUIDE THIS DAGGER INTO THE HEART OF MY ENEMY! MY WHOLE LIFE YOU WERE A TEACHER AND FRIEND TO ME! PLEASE KNOW MY ACTIONS ARE NOT MOTIVATED ONLY BY ENVY! I TOO HAVE A DESTINY! THIS DEATH WILL BE ART! THE PEOPLE WILL SPEAK OF THIS DAY FROM NEAR AND AFAR! THIS EVENT WILL BE HISTORY AND I'LL BE GREAT TOO! I DON'T WANT WHAT YOU HAVE.. I WANNA BE YOU!! I always knew i could be the one.. though i feel the endless pain of being & i am scorched by the sun of humble origins and born of the cursed sex.. My name is Brutus but the people will call me Rex!

I love this song so much, it has so much anger but it's not beautiful anger. It's jealous, bitter, spiteful anger that tells a very bitter story without mellowing anything down. Usually when I see angry songs about females it's either romanticized or made to seem like the lady was crazy or it simply doesn't go in-depth into her anger like this. Most times it just tells but this shows and every sentence has so many layers of experience and emotion... Amazing song, Soul searching lyrics... I love your artistry
