I am very impressed at the detail and effort put into these last 5 butterfly technique videos. I especially like how Evgeny explains things so you understand what you are doing. However keeps the techniques simple and "Forward movement" focused so you can test this in the pool and don't become bogged down. Thanks for you work!

The biggest problem I had with butterfly was that I was rushing my stroke and couldn't get my arms far enough out of the water. Once someone observed me swim and told me to put a slight pause at the end of the glide, I found myself easily able to get my arms out of the water. Any time I feel myself get bogged down, I allow for a slightly longer glide and the problem disappears. I hope this helps someone!

Thank you so much for this series of butterfly videos. I am going to try this all out and hopefully learn to do butterfly! :) I would love to see you cover breaststroke as I am having a lot of difficulty with the kick, timing and keeping my head in a neutral position on the pull out of the water.

Your videos are great! I am trying to implement all the advices but I don't think I am doing well XD though that is maybe because I am really tired when I breathe every second arm stroke, it is not enough air for me and I am dying after one pool hahahaha I try to do more and more dolphin kick to gain the endurance but still I think it is the hardest style. I tried also dolpin kich on my back but this is completely weird and I think I should try butterfly on back too maybe after some time it will feel more natural. you did great job with the videos I cannot imagine how much work it took :) keep going I am yout fan! One question: I have noticed that some swimmers move their hands in an upward motion after entering the water, gliding a little before the catch phase, like you show in the video. This movement comes naturally to me too as a consequence of the body ondulation. But I noticed that other swimmers seems to catch the water as soon as their hands enter the water without the gliding phase. Am I wrong? BTW this last quick-catch movement is very difficult to me to understand and perform

Do you have a video to demonstrate flexible hips. I was told my hips were tight. Watching your videos, it seems as it's a balance between dive and recovery, and knowing how deep not to go. I'm just a bit confused, not by you, but by unhelpful feedback from others. I love your videos and would like more basic drills for butterfly.. advancing to advanced drills. More dryland warm up, training, before entering water.

First kick goes with the catch phase, second kick goes with the glide phase, after entering the hands in the water.

Very good high quality video with precious slow motion clips. However, there is a comment in the video about slow and fast boat and comparison to a swimmer. I think this analogy is incorrect. First, to glide on the water you need much higher speed than a swimmer (~2m/s), and much bigger propulsion power, so comparing motor boats with human swimming is not correct. Swimmers are not gliding on the water in the same sense as power boats or fast sailboats going with the wind (eg Finn, 470). Second, a submarine has higher speed when full submerged as compared with surface speed, this is because the wave resistance is dominant over skin/surface friction and submerged shape resistance.

It looks good to those who do not know how to swim butterfly. I am sorry but I do not think you should be proud of your butterfly at all. After recovery, your hands are way too early in the water, effectively going way too deep, then you need to pull them up and swipe sideways before the catch. Your kick should start before your hands enter the water. There is a golden rule in butterfly "Kick your hands in, kick your hands out". Do not have to take my word, check out Michael Phelps, Viktor Bromer, Stephanie Rice, etc. Hope this helps in your endeavour of perfecting your butterfly.

  • @SwimUp

Thanks for the comment. You are correct, in the video Alexander performs second kick a little late. However, in the video I highlighted that and recommended for swimmers to perform 2nd kick at the moment when hands enter the water. You should understand that for each swimmer is an individual technique. For some swimmers is it suitable to perform kicks earlier, for others is better to do it later. In my another video, "Butterfly swimming: Most useful tips" there is more common technique with kicking rhythm as you told. So each swimmer should find the most suitable technique.
