We hired the Beverley Sisters to sing on the sound track, as they used to work at Butlins. It was an unreal shoot and it still amazes me that Butlins went with the idea!

This is almost avant garde at the start of this ad?! Like the ghost of The Beverly Sisters echoing out of the chalets and the dining rooms, before everything of the past Butlins get’s blown to bits! (Eventhe Beverly Sisters ghosts!!!!)

The chalets are the old staff chalets at Bognor Regis. The dining room was the staff canteen, and I seem to remember the rest of the camp was Filey which had closed down four years' earlier, but was still standing, just!

It reminds me of old public information films (like the dangers of chip fat fire) or grim films like 'Threads' or 'On the Beach'. I'd never seen it before today, but it certainly seems like a novel (and potentially brave/risky) marketing technique - for better or worse, it's attention-grabbing, even now.

It was a clever idea - the camps were outdated and dilapidated, incapable of competing against all the new holiday options that arose during the 70s and 80s.

For those moaning about how much Butlin’s has changed since and that it should’ve stayed the same because you don’t like it now, you only have to look at the state of Pontin’s the last 15 years to now, to see what could’ve happened to Butlin’s if it too refused to change with the times.

I suppose this was meant to be a metaphor, but it would have freaked me out in the 80s. (I was a young child back then, but I don't recall seeing it). It would've made it seem as though Butlins was going to be destroyed. Plus, there isn't much sense of what to expect of the 'new' Butlins. (I guess it was too early to show anything when this was filmed.) The whole vibe feels weird, though it definitely grabs your attention. In contrast to this ad, I don't feel as though the remaining camps changed that much during the mid-late 80s/early 90s holiday worlds era other than the branding (my favourite Butlins holiday is Minehead 1990). There were still the main buildings, outdoor funpools, chalets, dining hall, monorail, chairlifts etc, plus the Sunsplash was a refit of the existing indoor pool. The actual changes seemed pretty minimal compared to what was implied here. The changes from 1998 onwards have been a lot more dramatic.

They blew up the Hi-Di-Hi image style of Butlin's in this advert?!😂 Spectacular, but it would seem with it being diphalated and abandoned, and it was a junk universe of that era, it seems spooky unlike the 1999 to 2004 junk universe of Butlin's that I visited, where it was still thriving.....

I visited Butlins Minehead in the 90s and parts of it still had this sort of accommodation. It was like stepping back in time. I remember sharing a table in the canteen with a nice elderly couple, and even they were amazed at how unchanged and dated it was. "Come on then, let's go back to our billets" the old man would say as he returned to the chalet from breakfast.

@@MatgoStyles it’s actually because of the Bourne buyout around 2000. Rank wanted to have high street names in the places at the time e.g. Burger King, Jumpin Jaks, Hotshots, Pinewood Studios Bar and Odeon. Jumpin Jaks reverted to Jaks since Jumpin Jaks was sold to someone else, the Hotshots name was also sold with butlins to Bourne since Rank either closed or changed the places to Mecca Bingo halls and Odeon was sold to Cinven. The ABC name was given to the resorts around the 2000s since they’ve probably had the Odeon licence expired.
