But do you REALLY need a sound booth?

Ойын-сауық

Do you really need a sound booth for doing voiceover?
Are you sure?
Today I discuss my purchase of a #StudioBricks booth and if it's really necessary.

This is one of the best ‘rationale’ videos out there. The ‘when’ is the key to the whole thing. Once I bought my booth it gave me all of that control you speak of. Revenue went through the roof after that, due to having much more time I had available to record clean audio. Say hello to beautiful France for me. I lived in Lyon for a few years, back in the early part of the century 😊

Thank you and Bonjour from France ! Yes, the freedom and consistency are the key points for it. It makes all the difference between making recording a hobby and a career.. Thanks for stopping by!

A walk in closet with blankets hanging up works for me. I would love a booth, but don't feel like I NEED one

Yeah, it's all about using what is best for you. I would like to have stayed with the treated closet. It's certainly a lot cheaper. Just couldn't provide the flexibility I need.

yes I really needed one, I ended up with a whisper room which wasn't initially as soundproof as I wanted. I made it a whole lot more soundproof by adding safe and sound rockwool and 5/8 drywall.

Nothing like a nice layer of rockwool. If I owned my place instead of renting I would have double walled the whole room with a rockwool layer.

Thanks for putting this video together JF. Was great to hear your thought process. I’m in the market for one of these and it seems for similar reasons. Was so useful to know someone else had come to similar conclusions in similar circumstances and I’m not completely crazy for considering spending these big bucks!! Also found your sound isolation test video very helpful. Couple of questions that would be great to hear your thoughts on if you get the chance. Which size did you end up going with? Did you have to do any further treatment or did the studiobricks standard setup suffice? Did you go for their VO bundle with the mic boom, table etc? Seems pricy so I wonder what the quality is like and whether it integrates well and gives good flexibility with mic placement so you could record standing or seated? How much does the base catcher take off the length of the booth? I’m 6’2 so I’m pretty sure I won’t be able to stand underneath it. On a separate note - you mentioned possibly sending a sample to a voice coach. I wonder - have you had experience having lessons with a voice coach? If so it’d be great to hear your thoughts and possibly a nice topic for a future video? I stumbled into this career by accident and, a few years in, I’m really starting to wonder if I should be investing more in my instrument and clearing up any bad habits I’ve developed. Thanks again. :)

Hi Jack! Thanks for the questions. Some of this I was in process of working on some videos for so I've decided to combine it with the rest of your questions and cover them all in the next video. Should have it up in the next few days.

Booths remove immediate reflections but then give yoyu phase issues and comb filtering making the resulting sound more boxy and almost impossible to treat in post. I’m not yet decided which one is worse

It isn't a given that a booth will cause the issues mentioned. They CAN, but those issues can also happen in a larger space. There's a lot to be considered. Sound treatment, construction materials and processes, mic placement, mic technique, etc etc etc. A booth that's too small, or not properly treated, or a microphone that is not well positioned in the space can all cause boxy sound. A booth also won't necessarily remove immediate reflections and they could also be removed without a booth through proper sound treatment. Audio is a complex science.

@@LetsTalkJF If you're a proper singer, 98% of your singing will be practice. Regardless of how good your voice is, your neighbours will eventually get pissed off with that practice regime. Vocal exercises aren't selected for an audiences appreciation, only vocal improvement, and it can be hard to practice in a dedicated fashion when you suspect your neighbours are hating every minute of it and you for inflicting it upon them.

@@robertmazurowski5974 I used to practice in my car, while driving, as it made good use of the otherwise unproductive time. It's not good acoustically, but all those muscles get a workout they otherwise wouldn't be getting. If you're a beginner, two to three hours a day as opposed to one adds up. If you play other instruments as well, practice time is often in short supply.

@@deaddoll1361 All very true. A lot will depend on the structure of your walls as well. Except for when really belting it out, the walls here tend to block most voices. A booth would certainly let someone practice the full range of their voice without being heard, except by those just outside the booth. But if placed within a room, such as the way I set up mine, the additional closing of the office door pretty much blocks everything.

Hello Ángela. It is hard for me to say specifically what the cost would be for you. There are many variables, not just the size. But additional options, customizations, shipping, and if you can pay all cash. The best option is to contact StudioBricks through their site and get a quote. I found them very responsive and up front about all the details on cost and shipping.

I’ve come to the conclusion that if the space is small, it’s either too boxy or too muffled. Either way, the size of the space is a problem. The quality of the old both was too ringy and resonant, even if it’s considered acceptable in most circles.

A small space makes things a big challenge for sure. Though much can be done in the way of treatment, mic position and technique, and even microphone choice to minimize the boxiness. No system is perfect, but doing what one can to provide the best possible quality is always important. I'd love a massive recording studio as would many Voiceover talent, but few can afford the necessary budget. Maybe when I land that big Disney role. 🙂

Is it just me or does the bought and assembled booth sound boxy?

  • @LetsTalkJF

As with any smaller space, it does have the potential to sound relatively boxy when compared to a larger recording studio. The smaller the studio space the more risk there is. Microphone placement and other techniques will help in addressing such issues. No system will be perfect, though I've never had complaints of boxy-ness, other than when I am intentionally far off the mic. Another reason for recommending going with the largest size you can manage. The larger the recording space the easier it is to avoid having it sound boxy. There's also some amount of personal perspective to it, boxy-ness can be perceived differently by different people. Which microphone is being used, and what fx and processing are applied can also alter the tonality of the recording. Have a listen to the demo reels and see how they sound. Thanks for checking out the video!
