I believe you always have to put this kind of advice into the right context. What kind of tracks does someone like CLA typically mix? Those are tracks written, arranged, produced, performed, and recorded by absolute pros. At that level, yeah, you probably don't need to carve out space during mixing because it all falls into place. But that's not the reality for 90% of us folks out here. Don't get me wrong: I love that he shares his vast experience and knowledge, but I still think you have to take it with a grain of salt and figure out how his advice applies to your work.

In my opinion, the role of the engineer is vastly underrated nowadays. Especially with so many musicians recording from home to keep costs low. The difference between some drummer strapping an SM57 to their snare and a great engineer is night and day. THe first one gives you headaches as a mixer and you start to question why you never get it to sound just right after 5 attempts with sh*tloads of processing. The latter one is just pushing up the fader and thinking wtf, why don't I need to add any EQ or compression? I have been lucky to be able to hear some raw multitracks from pretty famous hitsongs from the 80ies and 90ies. You can get your balance right in two passes of playing with just fader pushing and panning, spend two hours having fun with effects and fader rides and some minor EQ/compression/gating tweaks, print to master, done… A good recording engineer makes the job of a mixer fun and easy.

RIP Al.

Julian, yes - you must have a proper recording before you mix the song. If you don't have a proper recording, then why is it being sent off to mix? It shouldn't get to the mix stage if the song is poorly recorded... However, if you have no way of having your song properly recorded by a professional, and you're not a recording engineer, then you should find a recording engineer or practice recording techniques yourself first. A mix engineer can make your poorly recorded song sound *decent* but just remember, it won't be as good as if the song was recorded properly.

Why wouldn't you get rid of unneeded shit so as to ensure the meal is good before you start cooking and tasting as you go, its like Trimming the fat before you turned on the Stovetop or Oven!! Most seasoned Chefs will tell you, "NO!! *USE* the Fat" !! to compliment other areas in the cooking process if you're smart enough to KNOW how.. etc.. I happen to take the stance that ignores this guy as the Gospel Word but I agree with him 100% to simply look at it a different way from automatically cutting and slicing before you start turning on the Stove or Oven! , USE YOUR EARS and experiment, Try it all !!! @@hummarstraful well technically not, he's high passing the guitar to remove a disturbing rumble. He never claims to do that in order to make space for something. Filtering, scooping and all those big things can still be done to get a proper sound out ot the instrument. Now the big problem is being capable of understanding the role of each instrument and sound, in order to enhance the frequencies you need and those that are mostly rumble/hiss/boring stuff. It's of course a way to make space for other things in the mix but what he basically means is, never force space for something in the mix, never take out good 2-3k frequencies out of a guitar to hear more voice presence (I'm just throwing numbers). Of course the answer is recording properly, recording with good instruments/preamps/chain in general and be overall smart

His take on "carving out space" is not the case for the **vast majority** of the people watching these videos. You have to remember that he's always working with incredible music that was recorded immaculately with the top engineers, the right sounds, the right instruments holding down the right frequencies, the right musicians, singers, background singers, microphones, preamps, compressors, rooms, etc, making it a lot easier to get that balance and separation everybody wants to achieve. When you get recordings like that, the songs virtually mix themselves - it's quite amazing. When you're at the top like CLA, you don't work on crap projects with crap recordings, singers, musicians, etc - you're only getting the best of the best sent to you from the top labels/artists who have the budget to work with you. People who are new to mixing are most likely getting crappy sounding recordings where everything is fighting with each other - thus making 'space' a hard thing to accomplish in your mixing. Example: sometimes when I mentor people on mixing, they'll be like "I was watching this video and this top mixing engineer only turned up 50 Hz on the kick drum by like .5 dB and he was done and it sounded massiveeeee, but when I do that, nothing seems to change or happen..." That's because the sound that he received was nailed in *nearly perfectly* on the recording stage so not much was needed to enhance it in the mixing stage! In a normal world for people who are new to mixing, most drums they are working with are flat, boring, in a crappy room, have polarity issues, no excitement at all, etc - so more is needed to make them pop! Also, I'm not knocking CLA at all - he's absolutely amazing and one of my favorite mixing engineers out there!

Eh. Idk. I’m making stuff in an untreated extra bedroom and this doesn’t bother me. I’ll use a high pass filter and a low pass filter to clean up the extra stuff on the top and bottom, and after you’ve done that everything sounds 80% of the way to the finish line. Then I boost the frequencies that sound exciting and that don’t clash with other sounds. And honestly it sounds pretty good. I think you do make a valid point that the arrangement is gonna be a huge determining factor in the quality of the song, though. If two guitars and a vocal all want to be heard in the 1.5 kHz area then it will take some twiddling, for instance. Which is why if I’m using the same guitar rig twice, I’ll switch pickups for the second guitar part. But still, boost in other areas and it seems to work.

There generally are no rules that always apply. With sub par recordings you sometimes have to scoop out frequencies. But he probably gets expertly recorded sounds that don't need much corrective EQ. It all depends on the material.

Never dipped into overloading a pre-amp but I have added distortion to vocals to give them a bit more character. Interesting that you really make the plugins work. Everyone is scared of "digital artifacts" so no one pushes their plugins. Maybe we need to reconsider. Personally, I've never been afraid of taking 10-20 dB off a vocal part in one shot, despite people telling me "only do a little in each one" and love the 1176 emulators in the right circumstance. (I also love the sound of a fairchild.) Never thought of using a limiter at the end of a vocal chain just to keep it within the dynamic range you want it. Interesting idea!

I just took one of my rock mixes and got rid of all the high passing on guitars and kick. The mix sounded huge. Still needs adjusting, though, as all the low end hit the compression harder than before and the mix over all needs more high end now. But, it was a satisfying sound. Before i would try to get more bottom end from my mixbus EQ. Now it makes more sense to do CLA's approach and let the tracks extend more into the lower range.

@@hummarstraful Yeah. I don't know where it comes from that you need cut some frequencies in one instrument to make space for another one. I used to use HPF on every track and final sound always sound lifeless. Now I use LSF (not HPF!) only on instruments that are not bass instruments at all like snares, cymbals, etc. And on instruments with bass freq I use LSF just a little bit sometimes and almost never higher than 50-60hz. And everything sounded great with no dullness at all! I think more important freq range than bass is midrange which is scooped too much too. Appropriate mid frequencies can make wonders for any instruments or vocal. Real instruments have almost nothing in sub-bass range. Maybe electronic music or synths/synthbasses but when you check freq response of real instruments in spectrum analyser you can clearly see that they lived in 2nd or 3rd lowest charmonics. For example bass guitar live in 80-150hz not in 30-40-50hz.

As long as it's -6 to 0, you are good? If that's on PT faders, the mix bus is going to clip like hell. So he must have meant 0 on the build in VU meter in his mix hub plugin And then: "I never make space, there's room for everyone". Maybe he gets a lot of tracks from producers who already made space, which makes sense. Maybe his 'own' plugins which he puts on the busses have this EQ/filtering build in. If neither, he is about the only mix engineer on the planet not making space in a mix. He does cut lows in the vocal around 80 cycles though, and I have seen him do the same on hats around 150 cycles. I do love his work, a lot. His drum sound is amazing. And I dig his passion to pass on knowledge and get people excited for the engineering business. But please, do not oversimplify things to accomplish this, as in the end, that will accomplish quite the opposite.

@@xanderprangler8621 saturation is definitely something people can hear better because it widens the footprint that the track holds in the frequency spectrum. That jagged sound seems strong up front on just the vocal by itself, but may not be as noticeable as distorted or fuzzy in the mix bus. I understand. Just felt strange trying to observe the lesson with my mind on that instead

CLA's approach of never high-passing bass, kick, guitar or vocals (unless absolutely necessary) goes against just about everything the mixing community preaches. It may be that in a real studio with hardware that's easier to do. I find with mixing completely in the box I can never get the low end clear if i don't high-pass some stuff. Anyone want to add to what I'm saying? Still trying to figure this out.

I think it comes down to source material. If the initial recording is subpar then yeah, you may have to cut and scoop etc. not saying you’re recordings are subpar, but Chris is sitting in a high end studio and recording in a high end studio. And he has the gear and experience to get the sound perfect from the start. Where as we are likely fumbling through watching KZread videos trying to learn how to properly record a guitar or a vocal etc. I would say find a happy medium. Maybe not cut way out but definitely subtract certain frequencies from certain instruments or tracks, even by 1-2db will make a difference I think. And pay more attention to how you’re getting the initial raw recording.

@@fret2fret221 Good advice. One I've noticed about CLA's mixes, also, is that guitars and drums about about even in volume level, then he just feathers in the bass. The bass guitar is never dominant. That right there keeps the low end in control. After listening to several of his mixes through my studio monitors, I'd say the bass is about 15% of the mix. That's it. That then leaves low end space for guitars and everything else. Let me add, I've seen just about every tutorial video in existence by CLA. And in many cases he does high pass the kick around 30Hz. His statements on mixing are many times contradictory to what he actually does. In his video on KZread from Mix With The Masters of him mixing that Muse song, he cuts the "rumble" on many tracks, which of course is low end.

@@hummarstraful high passing the kick isn't making space for other things though... I think there's some different meanings going on maybe. If you have well arranged and recorded music, then the different parts fit together and you don't have to compromise the sound of the individual parts to make them fit. That's what he is meaning here I think. Yes you may well high pass most things, but it's not to make it fit necessarily, it's because you don't want the low end in that track.

i reckon most of the stuff he's mixing is recorded in very high end studios by high end engineers and high end musicians... not many engineers are leaving all the eq's flat in that scenario, so he's already getting eq'd tracks from great gear, great players etc... that may be part of why he has this approach (but im sure theres more to it)

So no side-chaining either? you know how many times carving out Hz's of one sound to make room for the vocal, or blending Kicks with Bass, etc. has saved my mixes ...i dont get it someone please chime in?

CLA makes room with compression and shaping with an eq, if he's send a 2track and a vocal he's not going to carve into the beat, he's going to compress and shape the vocals to fit within the beat, he also combines many reverbs, also CLA shapes the drums when recording it live

The Chris Lorde plugins are all useless if you're an ableton 11 user....we need updates from Waves immediately. Waves also needs to figure out a better way to organize the "shells" that they mindlessly group vst's together in. All this being said, the Chris Lorde plugins are incredible chopping blocks for vocals and bass I find particularly.
