Business Without Bribery: Making the Impossible Possible in Indonesia: Dharsono Hartono at TEDxJakSel
Dharsono is the president director of PT Rimba Makmur Utama, an Indonesia-based company developing a REDD forestry carbon credit project in Central Kalimantan. The former banker is trying to apply what he learned on Wall Street to the jungles of Indonesia and it's labyrinthian bureaucracy. In this talk, he gives an inside look at what it takes to get things done in Indonesia and the mind-boggling number of signatures it takes.
In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations).

"We have to fight this fight. If the givers (private sector) stop, the recipient will not ask anymore." Hope this inspire you all businessmen in Indonesia. If you want to succeed, do it right, don't do bribery..

Leading by patient example, that more and more people will come to realize that there is indeed a better way than simply following established patterns that we know aren't right, but follow anyway because of "common wisdom". Great attitude, Dharsono! May your story inspire countless entrepreneurs around the world! TED, this is gold!

I met and liked Indonesians attending the same university, (they had better food, just for starters), and in my ignorance, sympathized with the stories of corruption and violence, but having a means of comparison of systems is truly educational. A village level open market that operates on barter, sets the value of currency/trust, and it seems that it has everything to do with scale and effective witnessing of the transaction contract whether or not it should be deemed reliable and of sustainable value. So the original market is effectively an "open ledger" system that can skip over a lot of complications in finance and go electronic, as another app on the smart phone. Gratuity systems don't have to be inherently corrupt.

Everyone need to stand-up together to this idea. Amazing advice, transparent and sharp :). I think it would be amazing if Dharsono visits Universities and schools and do talks there, the young generations need to hear this. It is great to live in the UK where not so much of this "sogok2" about.

it is tought to change this rotten culture of bribery and corruption in our country. kudo to Hartono for the persistence and patient. I wish there are many more business people being persistence in 'teaching' the government people in our country on ethical and professional conducts.

I am very ashamed to hear this. Although it is true. How can our nation grow fast if even for a good thing he had to go such a long way & spent 4 years. CORRUPTION is still the main enemy of my nation!! Hope the new-elected government will take this issue Very Seriously & we as the people will cooperate together with them. Very proud of bpk Dharsono Hartono!
