I had a friend( withhold the name for privacy), his family had a farm in Burkes garden up until 1990’s. I was invited one time and it was a marvelous location. Another time I attended a country fair set up by the wonderful people and farmers of this exclusive land.

It's strange how just by how you two decided to walk up that hill above the cemetery it allowed us to experience that horse and buggy, put you in the same time space as those Amish folk!I guess it could be called experiencing a slice of time! You all always deliver!Old school Amish believe electricity is of Satan, I agree with them for the most part! They also believed rubber was of Satan ,so they had steel or wooden wheels on their buggy's! Most have adapted rubber wheels on their buggy's!When their training their horses to the buggy I 'll catch them sometimes 4-5 in the morning on these country's roads running their horses to avoid traffic! They look like old testament prophets dressed in black , with black buggy's, it puts the fear of God in you that early in the day!

Shane, I'm surprised that you didn't tell about Old Hitler, the large bear that is hanging on the wall at the Crab Orchard Museum. It also killed a number of sheep in Tazewell County and Burkes Garden. The general store in Burkes Garden was packed on a Saturday in May 2021, and there was nowhere to park when I was last there. Mattie's Place was also very busy that day. I've been to Burkes Garden twice and didn't see a horse and buggy there either time. I've read that there is a llama farm there, too. Nice video!

The bird, a red wing black bird.....being a high mountain valley over 3000 feet, surrounded by mountain peaks, the cold air drains into the valley on winter nights and the valley often has the lowest temperatures in Virginia , outside of mount Rodgers.....and the valley has a good snow pack in winter....usually does not hit 90 degrees in an average summer....I love grayson county too, white top , mount Rodgers area, very beautiful.....enjoyed, thanks you 2...🙏❤

Burke’s Garden is probably the most beautiful place in Virginia. I’ve only been a couple of times, but I love that area. I worked in telecommunications and can tell you a little about Burke’s Garden Telephone Company. In the late 1800’s Bell Telephone (now AT&T) allowed mostly rural areas to open their own telephone switches. They were known as Mom and Pop local independents. As I recall, there were still quite a few of these companies back in the late 1980’s. I know some do still exist, like Burke’s Garden. Melody, you mentioned the Amish, their buggy’s and road rage. I don’t live too far from Lancaster, Pa and at least once a year, you’ll hear of a buggy wreck out there. I’ve heard of “buggy rage” too. Lot’s of tourist’s ride too close or try to pass the buggy and sometimes the buggy driver will not allow the car to pass, which sometimes results in a wreck. I remember a story where several children were killed in one of these situations. It’s so sad. The whole reason folks go there is to see the buggys. ❤️

Thanks so much for that info, Mia, we had no idea about the telephone company there - that was great to learn. Yes, after reading those stories I can see why the Amish wouldn’t be too thrilled about all the sightseeing tourists out on their roads.

If y’all get a chance go to Holmes County Ohio, it’s the largest AMISH settlement in the world!! Much better than Lancaster Pa! We go to Lancaster often for business but go to Ohio more! Best part it’s only 5 hrs to Ohio AMISH country ! Come see us when you can don’t forget the worlds largest fiddlers convention in Galax in August!! The 7th-13th. We are so thankful for all y’all do! Keep up the great work! Happy Father’s Day Shane!

Turn Left on Laurel Valley Rd. (Rte. 603) past the Laurel Valley Log Cabin Church and down towards Troutsdale. Take VA 16 South towards US 58. Stay at the Dream Rock Silo B&B off of US 58 (you'll thank me later). Also, if you haven't already, def do a video on Cumberland Gap, TN.

Thank you Shane and Melody for a wonderful video. My it certainly does bring back memories of my childhood in WV. I remember watching people traveling up and down the road in front of my home in their horse and buggy. The area you traveled does remind me of Amish country in Kentucky. Its is interesting to note there are, at last count, three sects of Amish. The old traditional Amish believe that electricity came from the devil; therefore, if you ever have an opportunity to visit an Amish family whose values are traditional, expect to see gas lights. I have visited with such a family and it was so great. Burkes Garden is a wonderful and beautiful place. Thank you so very much.

Right away at the beginning of the video that Pepsi signed store reminded me of the J.B. Harrell Store in Grizzard, VA, which we stumbled upon during a road trip in 2013. I think that's in Sussex County. Then maybe 100 yards down the road there was another building with a Pepsi sign on one side and a Coke sign on the other. Oh, and the J.B. Harrell Store also had an Esso gas sign and gas pumps out front. You mentioned the Biltmore. We visited that in the 70s. What an awesome house. I still remember going through it. Okay, I'll continue watching the video now. :) Okay, when you got to the general store, Melody said they have a buffet dinner from 4 to 7. That sounds awesome. Still watching... Burke's Garden reminds me of Salem and Cumberland Counties in NJ, except for the mountains. There aren't any in this part of NJ. Mennonites and Amish have similar religious beliefs, but the Mennonites use modern technology, including driving cars. I know of at least 3 Mennonite churches in Cumberland County, NJ. I think the Amish don' t have church buildings, but have their services in members' homes. That interesting bird with red on its wings had to be a red-wing blackbird. That's my only guess. We see them here all the time. We have coyotes around here, but there are never any stories about them killing any livestock. I photographed one once. Great video. I really enjoyed it.

Hey Guys, As always an awesome video, thumbs up. I live in a tri-state area here. There are Amish and Minanites in all three states. They are horses & buggies on the road here every day. Melody, I live about 45 mins from Lancaster, PA. Are you sure we didn't meet back then? lol. Some of the Amish & Minianites are out in the world. They drive cars & trucks and they use cordless power tools. They buy & sell whatever they can make money at. I've seen a few of them shopping at Walmarts near me here. They are getting more & more modern. But they pretend to live the old ways for tax reasons. ( I always heard.) Btw, They don't like having their picture taken by tourists. That may be why the buggy speed is away from you. If you ever get up this way. Give me a holler. I'd be happy to meet you guys. Stay well & safe on the roads. God bless you.

@@rockycoyote I know a guy that is Mennonite. When he was fairly young he left the family and married a woman that is our world. (I'm not sure about her religion.) And he drove Tractor & Trailer cross country. His dad would not speak to him for years. The only time he could see his mow was when his wife picked her up after church and bring her to see him at his home. Later in life, the guy contracted Guillan Barr Syndrome. That's a rare mussel & nerve disease. He was sick for a long time and almost died. Finally, his dad broke down and started talking to him & visiting him. I contracted that same disease in the 80s. That's how I met this guy and his family. They would come to the hospital and visit me and give me hope of getting well. They are amazing and nice people. The best people I ever met. If you ever get the chance to befriend Mennonites or Amish people go for it. They are super nice people. I hope you guys are doing well. Stay well & safe out there.

Thank you both for another wonderful video. In a few weeks I will drive to Huntersville N.C. and on the way back to N.J. drive through West Virginia, slowly and see as many towns as I can, no rushing, taking the scenic route. It looks as though I may be able to stop and see Burkes Garden on my way to West Virginia.

Its nice when you can see far ahead on curvy roads. You can cut the corners off so its not so bad. Love the scenery and landscape ! Hope you guys track the car noise down soon , i still hear it at certain speeds ! lol Stay safe ! When the horse and buggy was going down the hill it looked like its feet were not touching the ground from going too fast ! hahaha

My mother lived in Burkes Garden when the Varmint was killed. ( She also met Clell Lee who was hired to kill him.)

My comments: Amish store is newly built, not an old country store. That would be the post office location. My family once lived in the house next door to the "new" store. My father, T. P. Goodwin, was the store keeper and postal clerk years ago in the old store. There is also much to say about the bear, Old Hitler, that was brought down many years ago, but those men are gone now.

You all ought to go to Grayson county Va. it’s a dying county. No jobs , people leaving. One stop light in the whole county . Fries Va. was a mill town now it’s dying as well . I left it years ago & wish I’d done it sooner .
