Burg Eltz - Rick Steves' Favorite Castle - May 2019
Burg Eltz is a beautifully unique medieval castle. It's been untouched by wars and in the same family for over 850 years. It's no wonder it's Rick Steves' favorite castle in Europe. Near Wierschem, Germany - May 2019

Of all the castles in Germany, Burg Eltz is one of the oldest going back to Celtic times and is today one of the best kept and most beautiful.

Celtic times? Wasn't this area already Germanic during the final centuries of the Roman Empire? But the transition from Celtic to Germanic in Germany has always fascinated me, and there doesn't seem to be much said about it, so if you know more about it please tell me.
Castles castles castles 💞💞💞🏰 love love love 🇩🇪✨✨Beautiful place . Rick steves enjoy your travels👏👏👏👏
This seems to be such a charming place, I hope I can visit sometime in the future. Seeing and sharing places like this is why I love traveling and make videos so much!
What serenity. The music was very complimentary to the video. Sounds like Ravel. What a beautiful legacy. Lakes and trails and enchanting gardens. And what a monumental display of historic treasures. I hope to visit one day. Thanks for sharing.
When stationed in Germany in the early 80's, I visited this castle several times with my future wife and we appreciated the history and our visits very much. One thing I must stress though, is that Burg Eltz is a renovated Medieval castle, a true fortification set for defense and the collection of taxes from the river traffic [originally]. If you take nothing else away from my comment, drive to the castle car lot to park and do not hike to the castle from the main road. Your legs and lungs will love you for it later because of the steep terrain.

Me too! Stationed at Hahn AB
Beautiful!
Absolutely Beautiful
In America there would be several mcmansions on those surrounding hills, all built within the last 10-20 years.
one of the very last survivors of medieval time castles in Germany,.... never conquerered (they were great fighters and survived many sieges), never destroyed and owned by the same family for much over 800 years up to now and keeping that EXPENSIVE beauty alive..... just come and look inside and outside.... and enjoy...

and an additional photo inside without a flash... if you are clever and the guides don't care..... and if you post these photos.... your photos are helping that beauty to survive another 800 years.....
Super video, beautiful!
Какие творцы архитекторы и умелые строители, создавали такую красоту🚮

I love it
Rick Steves hates walls but yet has a favorite castle? Go figure.
some really nice shots, you pan a little too fast tho. there is a lot of detail for the eye to take in in your frames and it goes by a little too fast. other than that a really enjoyable video!!
Can anyone say why the 2 different styles and directions of stonework on the steps at 0:55?

Actually there are more than two different masonary styles: The castle footing is on Celtic ruins. Above that there are Roman ruins, above that is Frankish and later Germanis architekture.
At what time of the day did you visit? There are hardly anyone there and I though there was many many tourists usually.

Usually it is pretty busy, but I went on a weekday in early May. Plus it was cool and cloudy and eventually started raining. I’m sure that kept people away.

The Lion with the red background is the Eltz coat of arms. It's the "from the golden lion" line. The other Eltz lineage has a silver lion. I don't know what the under part with the pattern represents. Three families of Eltz have lived in this castle. Each of them had a different coat of arms. One half lion and the other half something else to distinct them from each other. Soo... The thing on the right with the black background is a Wolfsangel. It was a tool for catching wolfs. You put animal meat or guts on it and place it high enough on a tree. The wolf jumps for it, bites and his snout gets stuck in this thing (it better said gets through the snout). He will painfully die if no one is coming to end his life quickly. Well, this tool of course doesn't exist anymore since a long time. But is a heraldic symbol on many coat of arms.
👍🏻
One way in one way out uh nope I'm ok
Quite gorgeous innit?

Miss the usual eloquent commentary supplied by Rick, but then again, maybe not.
What's with the horror music?

I agree. The video could be improved with music.
All the endless, smooth, white walls was weird. No inner authenticity. Did not like.
Needs a paint job
Its sounds like horror place to live scary
