BupBoats TacTics :- The Lee Bow

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This video explores the theory behind the Lee Bow and shows how a trailing sail boat can use the windward wind shadow to attack the the lead boat while sailing to windward.
This simple sailing Tactic can help you control the boat in front creating a passing lane to prevent the leading boat from covering you while you sail to windward.

Wow, that's incredible, i'm guessing this works for every class of boat including dinghy's. Thanks!

Yep Charlie works for all classes. Smaller and slower boats can even control larger boats with this technique. The only exception would be if the boat you are tacking under is substantially faster or can point more than 10 degrees higher than you. Put it to use and you will quickly find what works for you.

Outstanding vid, the best I have found on lee-bow'ing. It took a while to get the full benefit of lee-bow on the upwind GBR boat.

Thanks for stopping by and for the positive feedback. Yes it did take some time. The boat to windward started pointing higher after the tack and attempted leeboards, they almost broke the wind shadow. The boat to leeward had enough runway to take their time which was key. Other option is to leave the tack till later, issue with this is the windward boat may then choose to clear there air straight away which would reduce the wind shadow effect.

The boat that was leeward bowed as you are saying should have tacked as so as it was losing the tacked back again onto the same tack into clear air. Or pulled the vang on a little to sail higher but at the same speed.

Both good options to try and stay clear to windward. We were approaching the top mark so the needed to make that call quickly which they sadly (for them) they didn’t. They where pinching but the bait to leeward was doing the same, the higher they went the harder it got for them as the where already in the back wind of the boat ahead 👍

Why would they not have sailed higher and with same speed already? Why sail lower without speed gain in the first place?

Why didn't starboard boat just cross the bow and then tack right on them?

We were close to the top mark and wanted to protect the starboard layline. If you went through and tacked ontop you would do two racks to the ports boats one with the limited time to build back up to top speed chances are you would have been behind at the top mark. Tacking where we did ensured the port boat sailed the maximum amount of time in disturbed air.

I was just going to ask the same question, but now I get it, they will have disturbed air on windward side then leeward side. Nice might use this if situation happens to us

Spot on Jason, taking this approach gives you more options than crossing and tacking to windward. Choosing to cross could result in you getting Lee bowed if you can't complete your tack far enough in front of the boat on port

@@jasonrogers3030 The port boat needed just to take two sort tacks to get out of the broken wind so this would mean that he may have over shot the mark just a little so then pull away a little and drive back down towards the leeward boat to get between the leeward boat and the rounding mark just before you get to the mark if you can get in there then you have control over when the leeward boat gets to round the mark.
