Bunions | Common Causes & Treatment Options

Dr. Pete Deol talks about bunions: common causes and treatment options.
Bunions are often caused by genetics, or overly tight footwear. There are several treatment options for bunions, ranging from preventative and conservative measures, to surgery. The best option for you will be based on your individual bunion.
Dr. Deol is a fellowship trained, board-certified orthopedic surgeon at Panorama Orthopedics & Spine. He specializes in the treatment of foot, ankle and lower leg disorders, with an additional focus on orthopedic trauma. He takes care of patients in the greater Denver area, including Golden, Westminster, and Highlands Ranch.

I had bunions on both my feet from a young age & they were so painful 😫 Decided to have an operation on both my feet at the same time & my feet were placed in bandages for about 3 months on crutches & wearing boots. Then a couple years later I had to have a 2nd operation on both my feet again as there wasn't enough bone taken away. This time both were placed in plaster cast & made that I was walking on my heels. Such a better outcome & my little feet are nice & straight & pain-free. 😊

Barefoot/minimalist shoes for starters. My right foot looked like those ones in the xray and my left was starting to get the slight beginnings of a bunion. I've been in barefoot shoes for the last 2.5years with zero foot pain. About three months ago I started wearing CorrectToes (actually a cheaper duplicate which is the same, I know coz I've worn the real thing), then got a load of toe socks to wear with them, started stretches and got some even wider barefoot shoes (your feet tend to widen when not crammed into regular shoes). My toe was at about a 20 degree angle and now three months later is now about 15 and not pressing on the second toe. My left foot has no bunion at all and about half a cm of space between it and second toe when I'm standing. I can use my foot muscles to pull all the toes on that foot 4-10mm apart from each other now. A long way to go with my right but already much more mobility and I can see my feet aren't gonna end up like my mum's with overlapping toes (I'm 31 and hers were really bad in her early 40s).

The reason my right foot was way worse was that leg is shorter btw, which leads to over-pronation. I very rarely wore heels. Even a podiatrist I went to in my early twenties didn't notice this discrepancy and just gave me damn arch support insoles. I corrected the length different myself, hip pain went away. I avoid counter-productive arch support, and whaddaya know, I no longer over-pronate.

There is no structure in the foot other than the outer tissue and skin to hold that darn big toe bone in alignment. So it starts to splay out and it just keeps going with age. People with nice straight feet are so lucky, bunions suck! Flat feet or fallen arch feet seem to be a bit predisposed to this splaying of the outer most metatarsals. Also the first metatarsal rotates on it axis with the top of the joint now pointing to the outside of the foot. ( Inside body centerline ) The big toe having only two bones, the rest three, then pivots towards the rest crowding them with possible hammer toe result on them. As our bones, ligaments, tendons lack adjusting threads and lock nuts like automobiles steering linkage have,, surgery is required to realign our toes. The foot must take the pounding of our entire bodyweight plus any load carried. Over a lifetime it starts to wear out and take a hike to parts unknown so to speak. The sesamoid bones and related ligaments are now pivoted towards the inside of the foot rather than bottom. It seems the connection of the first metatarsal and the medial cuneiform should have been more vertically stabilized with interlocking surfaces. But this may have upset the geometry elsewhere. The complex interconnected movements of the foot are incredible. The healthy foot can do simply amazing agility trials.

That made me cringe,,, when I'm laying down, it's like a phobia the way it feels when both my bunions touch each other. I also never knew what bunions were and just thought I had ugly deformed feet, but I'm a guy, and no women ever said anything, except agree that they are ugly, I couldn't imagine my girl having my feet.. she's the longest I've ever been with someone, and has my children. Like a year ago is when she did some researching after me complain to many times About them hurting now. Well turns out I was born with them and all I've been doing making them worse. My toes are trying to overlap just like my grandfathers were. And he just got the index toe removed and left the sideways looking feet

Good news: bunions are reversible. Either through low cost treatment, or in the worst cases, surgery. You don't have to just live with bunions any more than you have to live with crooked teeth.

Zhan Kulmetov True however you can have more of a genetic predisposition for them to develop based in one structure. That’s what happen to me and it is only on one foot. Has been like this for as long as I can remember. Even as a child. My mom would always check my shoes by pressing to see where my toes were so I would not continue to wear shoes that were too tight. Also surgery is not recommended for children as their feet are still growing and forming. Mine doesn’t bother me too much unless I have been in my feet a lot like when I was in the marching band or jobs I have had. I am much older now and unless I have a lot of pain, am going to just monitor it. However I do hate the look of it but bunion surgery is not recommended for cosmetic purposes only.
