Ace may not be a "virtuoso" guitar player. But he's one of the most influential, and without contest THE COOLEST!!!

Ace made solos that were mini songs within the song solos you could hum or sing not many if any have done that ace was cool and slick and lazy and melodic its just him he lived it and played it

Alive ...…… That album really raised the bar for other bands , Paul was the first I ever heard go out there & Command & take control of the audience, They went out there, just like he said They went out for Blood went they hit the stage, it was all or nothing & every gig was MSG . Watching the old footage & compare it to ANY other rock bands old Footage & see whos more enjoyable to watch live. KISS between 75-79 … I was just scared of Gene but Paul was like the Fonz of Rock & Ace was always super cool, All of them, as a band were my Rock Gods when I was younger. I think they were responcible in a huge way in the 80s for Glam Met6al, Hair Metal, Hard Rock & Metal. Look at Venom and Slayer back in the early 80s, even Crue, Wasp, Overkill, Anthrax, the list goes on & on & on & on.

Kiss alive l Started me on bass. Gene lived 2 blocks from me in Flushing Queens. I was born in the same hospital as stan. I was 15 at the time of Alive l. This assessment is spot on. It's amazing how so many people miss the very clear 50's rock n' roll element of the KISS sound. This makes it even more egregious that it took so long for them to be included in the rock n' roll HOF.

Nailed it. Wouldn't be here without Ace; he was the first inspiration on our guitar player.

Not only is Ace "so fucking underrated" so is his tone!!!! Just amazing!!!!!

Eddie Kramer sings his praises to this day. Ace blew him away when they did demo's for the first album. "The heart and soul of Kiss" - Eddie on Ace.

Ace was not the fastest . but truly an inspiration with his style..he did tap before Eddie..look it up..only ace did it differently using his pick

@Ace Frehley Eddie was not inspired by Ace's tapping. He's told the story before it's actually Billy Gibbons who tapped (with his finger, not pick) in the song Master of Sparks which came out in 1973. Between that and the opening lick of the Heartbreaker (LZ) solo is what inspired Eddie. But yes, Ace is highly influential nonetheless.

KISS Destroyer was one of the first 8tracks I bought In the mid 70's. My brother and I joined Columbia House tape club at 10 and 11 years old. Yes, our parents didn't know till the tapes came in the mail. Lol. KISS, Sweet, Ozark Mountain Daredevils, Eagles H California, Nazareth, and more. 13 to be exact. Destroyer was my favorite! Thanks for the insight to how Ace made his guitar sound distinct.

That whole album is an education. Production, Guitar, Peter's drumming, Gene's bass (Getaway). I've listened to it regularly since 1977 and I find something new every time. 30 minutes of sonic candy.

Everybody starts somewhere. KISS is so many people's "gateway drug" to the addiction of playing an instrument. The landscape looks very different without KISS' influence to shape so many famous musicians.

Ace was my first guitar hero. The only reason I became a drummer was because my twin brother broke my Kiss guitar (with the nylon strings) that I got for Christmas and I got his drum set!

It's nearly impossible to learn how to play ace online, the only way I learnt from him is through kiss records... thank god this video exists

100000 Years is a unique solo. he didn't play many notes on that but it sounds so teriffic

Ace’s style and sound was great on those early albums. What really baffles me is why he never got any better.

The other thing with Ace was he tapped prior to EVH. But, Ace used his pick to tap not his fingers. If you go back and watch the Alive, Cobo Hall shows you can clearly see, and when he rejoined in 1996 it's also obvious. Ae's vibrato is just sublime, he bends the shit out of notes, and yes his picking is very distinctive, he picks HARD, one of the pick ups is a dummy, the Budokan sunburst but he has some stunning axes, Black Beauties and he's used Explorers too. People say his playing is sloppy, like the fellow guitar icon Steven Maynard 'The Riffmaster' Clark, I disagree, the greats are distinguishable by the other fact that all you need to hear is one riff, lick or solo and you 'know' who it is. For me, that's a true legend. Thayer wearing Ace's makeup and singing "shock me" is just criminal.

Ace was a huge influence on many guitarists. He wasn't the most accomplished when you compare him to the Page, May, Van Halen etc. But as mentioned here his style was superb, especially his vibrato and note bending. He was tapping as early as 1974. He's vastly underrated. Bumblefoot does a good job here on explaining. Early Kiss Ace was a fast player , until drink n drugs got the better of him.

If you listen to some of the real early Jam/practice tapes of Kiss (they are out there) he was quite fast and technical. Yes, the drugs slowed him but he did compose his solos. Exactly the same, night after night on tour, where as if you listen to Blackmore....the much more celebrated guitarist, he never repeated a solo from one night to the next. The one on the album we all know and love was impro. I prefer Aces approach because half the time Blackmore didnt produce a good one that night. If he had composed it, it would sound perfect night after night. Just my 2p

I have to say that his solo in the song Got To Choose on Kiss Alive is what inspired me to play guitar . That is his best solo ever recorded in my opinion , not Strange Ways . I thought that was Jimi Hendrix inspired from the song Are You Experienced .

Ace !!!! THE man that launched 1 million picks. I for one would NEVER have picked up a guitar (drums baby, lol) if it wasn't for ACE. and I'm a Les Paul freak also because of him. I also covet the OLD DiMarzio Paf's . I put them in EVERY Gibson that I have. Yes, I keep the original pups.

He throws it in with Country 6'ths riffs. Probably got from Clapton and Peter Green... who got it from Freddie King

Ace is not only a classic player, but a classic writer too. He doesn't need to be Yngwie or Michael Angelo or Paul Gilbert. He flags by feel, and it works.

Straight to the point. Very true, except for the Firehouse chords part wich is a Paul Stanley's guitar work. ....paint that axe, is unwatchable now.

+paul hardman I wouldn't say a lot. There was really nobody tapping like EVH or playing arpeggios like Yngwie 35 years ago. It's more than just calling it abuse, they made it an art form and did things that were totally unique. There are very few guitarists that have had an impact like Malmsteen and EVH. There is a reason for that, they are great and innovative players.

watch early videos of KISS, Ace was clearly finger tapping before EVH hit the scene. I'm not saying that Eddie didn't perfect it, I'm just saying he didn't invent it.

Paul Stanley wrote Firehouse, Ace just did the solo work. So the praise about cool chord changes and parts and classic sound, etc. should all go to Paul Stanley. Ace did everything else he mentions, though. Just trying to make sure credit goes to whom it’s due.

Copying Ace I find the thing I'm always struggling with is his timing... the way he connects different licks often involves slowing down or speeding up, and worse, rhythm changes to boot. His notes are pretty normal, but his rhythms are uncommon and interesting. & Ron is right, his vibrato matching the drums is classic Ace.

You obviously know what you're doing. Why no amp?
