My impression is that the writer and the illustrator hates everyone especially people that read/watch their creations. They seem to pick/create a bunch of unlikeable characters, and place the fate of the universe in the hands of those least viable to do anything good with it. The ending is consistent with the theme of the big finger to the audience.
