    Hi, my name is John Eskow, and i wrote this movie. Thanks for your fascinating insights! Thanks also for the open-minded and objective approach. You have a real flair for this work! I had several Air America pilots as tech advisors, so credit to them for the things i got right, and definitely my bad for the errors! The fact that the stunt crew could pull of those crashes with no CGI is, i think, pretty amazing....ever wonder how you stage a long, long belly slide like the one you made the (hilarious) KY joke about?......You have to DRAG it with incredibly powerful cables that are thin enough not to show up on film! Quite an undertaking! We've screened the movie at the Oshkosh air show several times, which is fun, but the most meaningful thing for me was getting mail from the widows of several pilots saying they were pleased to see their husbands' sacrifice finally recognized. Anyhow... Thanks again!

    I miss my husband so much. All I have left are his log books and memories. He flew for pleasure but his job was as a civil engineer for the government. He died 20 years ago in a non aviation accident after 3 days in the ICU. He flew taildraggers; Luscombe, Champ, Globe Swift and even a home built (not his) Pitts Special on it’s maiden flight. He was the first pilot to land on an for-emergency-only very short sloped runway in “the blue” in Arizona. (The Blue Wilderness Area) He flew to California to train with a stunt pilot (memory fails me, maybe it was Wayne Pierce?) and he told me later he was taught how to recover from a spin first, “because that’s what all stunts devolve to”. I’ve only been in the plane when he did a loop and a roll. The rest was his to enjoy. He was a cautious pilot, never a dare devil.

    Pilatus Porters were one of the A/C used in Laos. Also C-47, C-46s, Hueys, et al. There were military tacans in Laos. Generally the didn’t stay on the air long due to mortars. The mountains reached 2054 meters and more MSAs reached up to 7-8,000 ft. Lots of craft flew below. Weather was weird there. In the Annamite Range there were two monsoon patterns; one on the East (Vietnam), and another in the west. Cloud decks sometimes were below peaks. They varied ridge line by ridge line. Long Chein was more primitive than the movie portrayed, and had difficult approaches because of a ridge line on one end, and a mountain on the other. And mud.

    I was taught by the AF that when welding inside the fuel tank it isn't the liquid fuel that's the problem, it's the fumes that will ignite. Never tested that myself since the other maintenance folks always had the tanks empty and strong ventilation going thru it when I need to weld. I would expect the fumes in a half-empty tank would make a nice fireball, though

    For pretty much any hydrocarbon fuel you and I will ever run into, the flame can't burn off the solid or even the liquid. Even liquid candle wax doesn't itself burn; it's the bit which got hot enough to turn into a gas which feeds the flame. With a flame the solid wax is heated enough and liquefied. The liquid closest to the flame becomes hot enough that it's gassified, providing more fuel to feed the flame so that it can melt more wax to the point it's liquefied so that... You can usually fly on one engine as long as it's big enough but really small twin engine aircraft like some with Indian names are considered to have one engine split between two propellers. Even empty, with a lone pilot they're not staying up if that pilot weighs more than a couple of hundred pounds. As for those fuel gauges on the small plane, when I got my ticket shortly before the millennium change, on small aircraft only had to be correct at two positions: E and F. I haven't seen anything about that having changed and I shudder to think about the resulting chaos an AD (airworthiness directive) requiring them to actually function could cause. You fill the wings, you know your burn rate, you can watch the flow on many planes, good enough. Keep your blue up and your brown down.

    It's even worse than that you can have that tank completely inspected cleaned out and certified no vapor by The specialist person who does it with a license and do you know how long that certification is good for. One minute. If you are welding on a tank the heat alone can cause enough vapor to come out of the pores of the metal to explode.

    A couple of points, the first wasn't part of the flying. Air America did actually exist. It was a CIA front company. The kind of cargo they hauled in the film was part of the deal. One of the problems they had was that the guy the agency got to run Air America was actually a good business man (not a primary job requirement in this case). They were actually making money, and American Airlines and Pan Am started to take an interest in doing cargo operations in Southeast Asia. Flying related: I was a Huey Mechanic in the US Army. A Hueys run on JP4. We ALWAYS filled the fuel tanks before bringing them into the hangar, as the fumes are more explosive than the liquid. The Pilatus actually had a larger chance of an explosion with empty tanks based on what I know. All that said... excellent video, as usual!

  • @nhansen197
    @nhansen1973 жыл бұрын

    That wing explosion, the only way I know of for that to happen is if the fuel is trailing out the back in a vapor stream. Even gelatinized fuel can ignite with explosive results once it has spread out into tiny droplets mixed with lots of air. This same effect is why there is no smoking allowed at paper mills and flour mills.

    my dad was a cropduster pilot, he told me a dropduster pilot isnt experienced until he has crashed at least once. Another thing he told me was that he applied for a job once flying for Air America. I was shocked. He said his experience with short take offs and landings at unimproved airstrips was just what they were looking for. But he turned them down when they insisted he get his multiengine rating at his own expense before they would hire him.

    It uses Aviation Gasoline (AvGas), which is even more explosive then regular gasoline. I could see the movie explosion happening. Engine explodes, then fire travels up the fuel lines into the fuel tanks, which will be full of vapors. Also, Jet fuel may not be explosive, but the vapors and fumes are very explosive. I'm talking special hook up and disconnect procedures, no electronic devices allowed, and run if there's a spill.

    Kelsey! One thing about the C123 aside from the jet engines indeed running on the same 100LL that the R2800s did was that since the C123 was designed as a glider initially, the wings were not ever used to carry fuel. All the fuel was carried in the external pods outboard of the jets and in tanks that were part of the fairings behind the engine firewall. In some cases the C123 could have cargo bay mounted removable tanks but usually only for ferry flights. Another point with the C123 being able to safely fly on one engine, kinda not really especially when carrying even a light payload. That's why the jets were added and used primarily for takeoff and climb or in the instance of engine failure. It was a weird plane!

    I flew the DC-6 for 6 years. One correction, on a radial engine like this and engine fire is a real big emergency. You have about 4 to 5 minutes to get the fire extinguished. If the fire continues beyond 4 to 5 min the fire will burn through the spars and the wing will fail. If the prop is not feathered the fire will most likely not be able to be extinguished. Like 74 Gear says you won't just throw switches, on each aircraft type there is a fire procedure.

    I caught you, Kelsey! When the C-123 lands, and the wing explodes, you made the statement that jet fuel doesn't explode like that. You are correct in that. But, GASOLINE do! Now, the C-123 does have two jet engines. These jets are "aftermarket" add ons, for use when additional power is required, like take-offs and running away from the enemy, so jet fuel tankage is minimal. The main engines are behind the propellers, which are gasoline powered, radial type, 18 cylinder piston engines. The majority of fuel tankage in the wing is of the gasoline variety. We're talking a whole lot of 115/145 Avgas. Would you care to revise your statement about the wing exploding? (Love your videos, so you still get a 👍)

    The C-123 is a piston aircraft that uses AVgas, very volatile, I watched a C-119 land in king salmon alaska in the 1980’s, he had a fuel leak in the right wing, and when he pulled the power off with the mixture full rich he got a stack fire and it blew the right wing off just outboard of the engine. When he came to a stop, both engines were running. The co-pilot exited thru the door in the clam doors in the back while the plane was still rolling out leaving the pilot to shut down by himself, needless to say the co-pilot lost his ticket for a year over it. So if you have the cross feed open during landing fuel will continue to flow to the engine, and yes you can and many companies train their pilots to land with the cross feed open in case you have to do a go around with low fuel. And it’s the fumes that explode not the fuel but the fuel will igniter.

    9:32 What Kelsey said is TransAsia Airways Flight 235. The ATR72 had an engine failure on the right engine shortly after takeoff, but the crew shut off the left engine. Until the last moment that they realized the mistake, but it's too late and the aircraft crashed into a river. It is later revealed that the ex-military captain had gone confused about the cockpit indication but still arbitrary shut the wrong engine, without doing a crosscheck with the FO. The FO even once challenged the captain but was dismissed. A sad incident caused by the violation of standard operating procedures. The airline ceased operation one year later because of this crash combined with another crash several months prior.

  • @michaelobispo2008

    @michaelobispo2008

    Not 100LL in those days. Basically you had 80 and 100 octane and the military and airlines ran pistons that needed 115/145. Dunno what Air America ran in the piston aircraft (not sure if the C-47s and C-46s needed) in those days...they had some aircraft like Beech 18s that didn't need or like 115. I lived in Laos a lot between 1965 and 1972...actually started learning to fly in a Wren 460 (ex-CASI Continental Airlines subsidiary that did pretty much the same kind of work there...my CFI owned the only minature golf course in Laos...had the remains of a Twin Pin at the course) there...think it was run on 100 octane. Going to Oshkosh years ago and stopped at a fair sized airport for fuel. They had NO 100 octane...a KC-97 took every drop they had so my understanding that the 115 octane engines can run on 100 but you have to run lower power settings which of course limit most importantly your take-off limits.
